Improve Webi Performance with Index Awareness : SAP BusinessObjects

Index awareness is the ability to take advantage of the indexes on key columns to
speed data retrieval. We set up index awareness in Designer for object definitions and tell Designer which database columns are primary and foreign keys. Report query can take advantage of the indexes on key columns to speed query results.
It is one of ways to improve webi query performance.

what if the selected state is present in the state table but that does not have any fact data and hence if it is not present in the fact table? will it make a join of the 2 tables in the sql

If I am understanding your question on relation between merged dimensions and index awareness on objects, Index awareness feature is used while query generation while merge dimensions works on outcome of multiple queries.
