@Anthony_in_Bloomington_Indiana3 жыл бұрын
Cullin, you seem to be assuming everyone was raised in middle class or better homes, with stable parents, healthy enough food, and so on. I just watched a TED Talk with Doctor David Hendricks - Mind Is Everything. He talks about studying drug addict and alcoholics who suffered through 1 or more types of child abuse. He listed 8 types of abuse. With these people, brain cells did not form, entire regions of the brain are damaged. Doctor Gabor Mate in Toronto also writes about the brain damaging effects of child abuse. He has a few videos here on You Tube. When a child is stressed, the stress hormones damage developing brains. He said the same thing. Many brain cells don't form. Whole regions of the brain are underdeveloped. My childhood was horrific! It's a wonder I can function at all. It sounds like you grew up in a Disney movie, unaware of your middle class, cul de sac, white privilege.
@cullinm3 жыл бұрын
@@Anthony_in_Bloomington_Indiana Anthony - yikes! I'm shocked by your baseless assumptions here. If your intention was to have me become more empathetic to the plight of others, I implore you to do the same. You are incorrect in your assumption. My childhood was also horrific - my siblings and I make the same comment "it's a wonder we can function at all" With that said, I do want to modify my statement from 11 months ago because it's missing the nuance it deserves. I agree, our brain chemistry can absolutely make focus more challenging and reducing it down to a lack of discipline is incredibly insensitive. I no longer stand behind that. I do however still believe there are many that lack self discipline and there's evidence of that everywhere. By the way - dismissing my opinion because I'm white, assuming that my perspective is from a pattern of white privilege as a result of "growing up in a cul de sac" is embarrassing and you should strive to be better than that.

Active listening is a must Now more than ever
@Still-Learning4 жыл бұрын
@@YuniorGamboa YG, I agree. Distinguishing noise from constructive data becomes the challenge. Most people are not taught to think critically or listen actively which leaves the door open for non-constructive information, which is often masqued as "entertainment" and can directly influence what we PAY attention to. Remember, we get what we PAY for. In this case, the currency of pay is time, the most precious of all commodities. We pay attention; We spend time; We take a moment; We spare some time; We "act now" or "better act fast"; We ask, "got a minute/second?". Rarely, if ever, do we consider how we are INVESTING our most precious commodity. Everything identified as a "ship" can be viewed as a means of transportation that take us from where we are to where we want to be. Friendship, dealership, workmanship, etc. Like any other vessel, the quality of the ship influences confidence in the ship. When a person does not know how to intentionally navigate through the noise, they can end up wherever THEY ALLOW the ship TO TAKE them. It is imperative that people assess the quality of the relationship they have with themselves. Actively listening to who you are, where you are, compared to who you want to be and where you want to go, can provide a person with waypoints to safely navigate through the noise and distractions en route to achieving their most effective existence. Two ears, one mouth...we should listen twice as much as we speak. We should learn how to activate the third eye to live through the intuitions placed inside our DNA by the universe. Energy should be expended less like a grenade and focused more like a laser. -Keep Learning

OMGosh!! GREAT video! You are such a wise man. My friends Andrea and Audre and me just had a great discussion TODAY about this very topic! We all are minimalists, green lifestyle and do not own a tv. We were noting how when we each got rid of the tv (me 15 years ago) that our attention span and observational skills skyrocketed. The absence of what I call 'clutter noise' calmed my brain, increased my attention span and de-stressed me in ways I never imagined. Add in getting out for a walk daily, getting needed sleep, staying hydrated as you noted, and my mind, body, spirit health skyrocketed. And since then I have evolved to where I read 2 non fiction books per week, have a clean and orderly home, and send 3-4 hand written letters/cards to various friends and acquaintances, which they have told me, makes them feel that someone cares and that they are not invisible!
@BethGrantDeRoos3 жыл бұрын
@Am0gh It's more like when having a quiet conversation with someone and all the surrounding noises invade ones space. Or someone has the tv on and you are trying to work on homework, or read a book, and the 'clutter' noise makes it harder to concentrate or even relax.

I read the book Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport earlier this year. There is a lot of overlap between that book and the points you make in this video essay. The book Willpower by Baumeister is another good resource. The major point of that book is that depleting willpower by temptation resistance leads to impulse control deficits. Baumeister emphasizes creation of habit and setting up your environment to be conducive to focus.

Going along with the concept of creating time blocks to get things done instead of multitasking, I compose to-do lists every week at work and at home to help me visualize my goals. Doing so allows me to separate my personal and professional goals and create balance. Knowing what time is appropriate to work on the tasks I've listed for myself (and prioritized) allows me to focus and accomplish more in a shorter amount of time. So, yes, I agree with the quote about lack of direction being the issue over time.

Thanks for the video, totally agree on everything! As for my method, what I found worked for me was kind of forcing myself to do one thing at a time, it's somehow an extension of your "stop multitasking".
