Scott Flanders is back with another Monster Lab critique! In this lesson, he looks through student submissions from his “Shapecarving” assignment. He gives advice on the technique of shape carving in concept art, emphasizing the importance of simplifying shadows and using less detail to convey form.
For the rest of this summer a percentage of all Scott’s print sales will be donated to Maui fire relief efforts in Lahaina - shapecarver.gu... and 100% of proceeds from the sale of this print will be donated to the Maui Strong Fund - shapecarver.gu...

Flanders really is the man. The way he blends Mignola-esque simplification with clear design principles and a bulletproof process is something more artists should study and learn from.

I admit I was skeptical at first about this shape carving technique, but not only did it improve my workflow it also improved my art skills overall. Now I can create many random characters in half the time that it would have taken me just to do 1 rough sketch Thank you Scott Flanders

My two cents on this is that level of detail should depend on the exposure level. Let's say, you have a face blasted with hard light on the left side and hard shadows on the right. Depending on which side has the most detail, that's how you define the exposure. Because, for example, if your eyes are well accustomed to light, then you'll see the light side more detailed. Your eyes are accustomed to that level of brightness, so it can catch those details, but the dark side will look like a dark blob and you won't get much detail. On the other side, if your eyes are accustomed to darkness (like after being blindfolded for a long time) and you suddenly see this face, then the shadows will have a lot of detail. You'll be able to capture those details because your eyes are accustomed to low levels of light. Meanwhile, the bright side of the face will look like a blinding lightbulb, and you won't be able to catch details in that side, which can seem counter intuitive at first (like, what do you mean? more light = better vision, better vision = more detail, amirite?) but we need to consider how our eyes perceive the world. So yeah, shadow shapes are a good concept, but don't think it only applies to shadows! You can have light shapes, and your _shadows_ can be where the details are on instead.

this is not about the physics of eyesight, it is about the amount of details your mind can process in one go and therefore you can understand it as a readable story. too much details make your eyes lost in a search for patterns and storywise it is boring.

That’s very interesting, I’ve heard about and applied in my own pieces the grouping of shadows and the lesser details that blend together in shadow areas, but I’ve never hear or thought about the opposite, when it’s the light that’s blinding and shadows that have more of the detail, I will definitely experiment on this, thank you for this brilliant insight

Probably one of the most important parts of learning for new artists. Instead of focusing on lines, stay big and use shapes and forms. Not only is it easier to correct but it also makes your work look more dynamic. After all, we’re trying to create believable 3D objects on a 2d surface.

5:39 I would imagine that people who can already perfect a lot of that, in applying it to this, would get something absolutely stunning like Darkest Dungeon art! I've been wanting to make some recently based off the game but felt myself intimidated by the linework, when in reality I'll probably just use this method instead.

Without working so hard, how do you have enough experience to know which is the right way for you, and how do you keep improving, expanding to not be left behind in this endless cycle of struggle? I once believed in this "work smart, not hard" mentality, until myself entering this industry, and I have to tell you, it's actually those who work the hardest to always expand and improve, or those who are too unique are irreplaceable.

@ProkoTV
@ProkoTV Жыл бұрын
That's a common problem with critiques. Sometimes, the person giving the critique can do it too harshly OR the person getting the critique takes it way harder than it's intended. It's hard to strike that balance. But if you try to take every piece of criticism as sincere and truly well-intended, it helps. Try to see what the person means and how you can apply it. Even if they're being a jerk, it'll help to take it that way. Hope it helps!
