DO KETTLEBELL SNATCHES HURT?
A question I get very often is, “how do you make it so the kettlebell doesn’t slam on your forearm?”
The PUNCH THROUGH! 🤜🏽
Punching through is basically extending your fist and kettlebell handle so that they both sweep under the bell.
This movement flips the kettlebell upside down so that the large part of the kettlebell makes contact with the forearm before the bell reaches its highest point. This prevents the bell from crashing down on the forearm when it’s above you.
Helpful tips:
-Don’t death grip the bell. The handle needs some wiggle room to rotate and flip the bell.
-Punch Through while the kettlebell is weightless. This is usually the point when the kettlebell loses most of its momentum. During the snatch, that’s usually right as the kettlebell is above eyebrow or forehead level.
-Practice lower punch throughs. Watch the portion of the video when I start at eye level and work my way to a full snatch.

Nice drill for building the skill. An insight that helped me: note that when it hurts, the arm is straight on the way up. Punch through is enabled by putting a little bend into the elbow by pulling the bell toward the body as it flies up.

I assumed the kettlebell was supposed to remain ball down, handle up and travel around the forearm, not upside down over the fingers and then down onto the forearm.

The punch isn't what makes the SN smooth, it's the redirection of the arc and sneaking under the bell as it goes overhead.

I am doing that but it is still slamming on my forearm. I think the 'arc' of the kettlebell is my problem. I'm making it go in an arc instead of straight up.
@rogerp2910
@rogerp2910 Жыл бұрын
A kettlebell slamming is rarely caused by a bad punch. It’s usually from not using your legs to move the bell.

The physics of it make sense for the arc idea. If you watch close, the cg of his bell is basically going straight up and slowing to a stop at the top. At the moment his arm contacts the bell, there isn't kinetic energy from the bell driving towards the arm. With your 'big circle arc', there is remaining lateral motion in the bell slamming into your arm when they meet.

Unlike the swing, which puts the bell out away from your body, the snatch has the bell go up and close to the body

It does, shows a lot... Watch the center of the bells mass and see where it's kinetic energy is going. In the 'bad lift', the mass is slamming into his arm, and that adds up to pain. In the 'good lift', the mass moves straight, and is slowing to a stop linearly, while the punch through imparts a rotational motion so that his arm comes to meet the bell while it's largely stationary, so, not driving it's energy through the forearm as before.
