Seriously, this is how instructional videos should be done! Work with someone who doesn't know how to do a skill yet so we can see the corrections that need to be made. It is also encouraging to see someone have to try over and over before they get it, because that's what needs to happen.

I've been trying to manual BMX for over a year with no luck. I've watched countless how to videos but this is the first I've seen teaching someone that isn't already amazing at them. I can easily bunnyhop my Kona Stuff (set up as kind of a trail/enduro Hardtail with 140mm) and my Bergamont Kiez Dirtjumper. But I can’t bunnyhop my Nukeproof Mega 290, it seems like the back wheel is glued to the ground.. Maybe it’s because of the EXT Storia Coil Shock I installed. It has monster traction, in fact it has to much traction since I can’t get the back wheel of the ground, no matter what I do.

This is great! Screen shot the two riders at 10min and compare. Neils back is almost vertical, his thighs are almost parallel to the ground, his toes up heels down and very important ... his head is up and back. The average adult human head weighs over 5kg, it is a massive pendulum and the key to many successful maneuvers in almost every sport.

Oh man. Tom is ME! I have years of dirt jumping, freeriding, and downhill racing experience, but I still can't manual for more than like 1 second. I'm able to manual a short roller no problem, but I can't do a 5 second manual across flat ground to save my life. My issue is I always fall over to one side or the other and I can never correct it back to center.

Neil said he didn't see much difference in their position accept that his hips were lower when he looked at the recording but he also is sitting taller. His head is more upright, you can see his whole face, and his shoulders are further back relative to his hips. Tom is leaning forward with his head down. Neil effectively has his center of gravity both lower and further back because of his body angle.

I'm learning how to manual now, and one thing that was really helpful to me was learning to a bail off the back of the bike safel;y and with confidence. One thing that stood in my way (I can't speak for others) was fear: fear of looping out and falling off the back. Once I learned how to step off the back safely and did it a few dozen times, I was able to concentrate on the techniques needed to manual instead of being afraid of looping out off the back. Hope this helps others.

How did you practice bailing? I had a pretty bad fall on my back when trying to wheelie and would love to practice bailing!

@@Ancient88Wisdom Do a wheelie in the grass but use way too much force when you punch your first pedal stroke. You will be going pretty slow since it is your first stroke and the bike will just loop out between your legs, dropping you on your feet.

Tom asked every question i have about manuals. my movements are/were exactly the same and i couldn't figure out what i was doing wrong. i would like to see a follow up with Tom after a week and fortnight with an honest reflection on how much he practiced to show how hard it is to progress. for me i practice hard about once a month, forget, relearn hard, forget etc... i want to see just how long it takes so i can benchmark an effort. cheers

after earing Neil talk about the L shape technique for so long I finally tried it! I practiced for only a few minutes after my ride today and I finally managed to raise the frot wheel higher and get close to the balance point. Neil you made me a believer ! I joined the L shape cult today. Neil is my guru.

when Neil does manuals his toes of his lower/back foot are tipping up, and Tom is pushing is toes of his lower/back foot down. That's the reason why he comes out the manual quickly. did the same over and over until I really dared to street my foot up. love the videos!

Great! Love this ”teaching the average person”-style of video. I’m also practising manuals. Now I dont have any problems getting the front wheel up (no problems to loop out either 😊) but I’m practising to keep the front up by moving my weight back and forth. That’s difficult! One tip that was’nt mentioned in the clip which I think enhances your ability to lift the front wheel is to drop your heels! For me, that really helped. I did the same thing as the guy in the video. Compare his and Neils heels position.

I don't normally comment on skills videos, but this one ended up being surprisingly helpful. Like your test subject, Tom, I can manual trail features well enough that I've never spent much time just working on holding manuals for long periods of time. And when I have practiced, I've been fine at getting my wheel up, but I've always pulled too far over and overcorrected with the brake. While I realize feathering the brake will correct that, I still felt like I was doing something wrong. What this video taught me is that I was probably muscling my way in to the manual rather than using correct down-to-back technique, which, when done correctly, doesn't take very much muscle, and doesn't need to be done that quickly. I found during my test session today that I was able to get the front end up and to the balance point without extreme pull-over, and without using very much force through the movement. Thanks duders.

Every now and then I come back to this vid. Last time I stopped learning the manual because I was too disappointed I couldn't get it done. I took the wheelie-tip from Neil to learn the balance point 6:40. I'm starting to do a bit of a wheelie so that feeling is coming. A bit. The best advice: practice them every day. Just on the street in front of your house on days you dont ride trails! I would warm up practicing them for a half hour before trail riding too. Now i can do them on singletrack/rollers/puddles as far as i want for the most part. Even land in a manual off small jumps. Fun.

Neil is a natural teacher, after about half an hour of practicing I'm getting the odd time where its about to flip over but am able to use back brake to bring it down which means I'm on my way. Other thing is keeping the bike going straight....

9:00 get a cheap bmx to muck around on. Theyre really easy to manual and if you do loop out the seat is low enough that you can just jump off backwards and land on your feet but keep a hold on the bars if that makes sense

Proper way to go over a fallen tree. Rolling over an obstacle at axle height can result in hitting the BB/chain guard and possibly going OTB. I'd like to reduce OTB in the world by GMBN coaching the world around that "bump the front wheel on top of the obstacle immediately followed by pushing bike forward and hopping the rear wheel to where the front wheel just was" skill. Then take it to the next level of going up a tech climb where you have a couple of axle height steps to go up where you need to chain this movement twice.

I'd love to see that. I went OTB literally 2 days ago and separated shoulder. All because there was a log that had a drop off afterwards I wasn't expecting. Wasn't confident on speed cos the log was diagonal. All drop off tutorials are off a flat surface.

I think this is one of the best manual tutorials I've watched yet. Seems like all three others are all about pumping the front fork, but a friend pointed out to me that that's wrong. It really is pumping the whole bike and popping back. Also, looked like Tom needed to drop his heels more and I'd bet the front would come up a lot more.

Nice point that we found out when I was teaching my mate to manual and wheelie is to look far ahead rather than the front wheel. It helps with the straight line stability

Love the video. Very useful to include a learner to identify the usual mistakes. I decided to take the mountain bike into town yesterday (instead of the car) and used every downhill to practice manuals. Tips I found: - Start on a down slope at about walking pace, it's easier to jump off if you loop and you won't be scared of looping out. Stay at this pace until you are consistently finding the balance point - The point of "pushing the bike out in front" helped me a lot instead of throwing youself back - As a rough guide for getting to the balance point try getting the bars just below your line of sight with your bum down behind your saddle I can wheelie but never learnt to manual. I lift the front on the trail to get over obstacles but never reach the balance point. I still can't manual for more than a second or two but this video definitely helped me to improve and start getting to the balance point.

Great coach. He clearly has an insight into what the other rider is feeling and doing wrong. I can totally relate to the guy learning as I rode a 2000 Kona roast for like 10 years and I could manual that thing. Took a break from riding (school, wife, life, kids etc) and came back to a FS Enduro and I can't lift that front end to save my life! I can see from watching this there is no way I'm loading up that suspension NEAR enough! Thanks.

Mr. Neal real deal!!!! Thank you! This video is the truth. Helped me break through. The L shape move works and much easier on your back, neck arms, whatever. You can manual a bmx or something small without really doing the L move, but with a bigger 27.5 29 bikes it seems essential. You load the front and spring back and that just pops the front tire without too much difficulty. To go from that to a bunny hop is still a challenge. I pop up the rear and the front just flops right down, could be the subject of a future video. Good job!

Excellent video! I loved that you didn't simply show the skill but 'taught' it to Tom. Really liked how Neil broke it down and discussed it with Tom. For me, though, looping out was essential to learn the tipping point - bring the bike up and as you go past the pivot point jump off the back of the bike, keeping a hold of the handlebars - once you know where it is you become more confident about keeping control.

Two weeks ago I spent time at my local empty parking lot practicing the “L” motion of the manual. Two things I learned. Nothing replaces practice and being fit is key. I practiced for about an hour and was sore for the next two days! Lol Last week I rode at my local trail and applied some of what I practiced the previous week and had so much more fun than I had other times I rode there. I’m not saying I was a professional downhiller but I could definitely tell the difference in my technique. Practice, practice, practice people!!!!

I really think that if you're just getting into mountain biking, this is one the first skills you should really work towards. That's what I did and it helped me be more confident moving around on the bike rather than just being stuck in one position. After that, all sorts of other skills (like cornering) began to see dramatic improvement too.

Really interesting to finally see Tom in front of the camera after all these years and the S4P edits, I think one detail which wasn't really covered was using your legs and feet - should probably be aiming to be heels down and pump the bike forwards through the pedals, I found it v helpful when I was learning. Great stuff. I've never been able to manual. Watched the video, practiced for about 15 minutes and totally got it! The smooth L shape is key. You have to get super low and strong before moving your weight backward over the rear wheel. I would say, don't worry about looping out. If you go back over the rear wheel, no worries... Get your feet down and do it again. I looped out 3 or 4 times before I started to feel that balance point. Seriously great tutorial. I even like the format.

This episode is such a great addition to the first manual how to by Neil. The one thing I still need to work on is feathering the brake. For me, that trust in my ability to brake just the right amount is all that's left to conquer since I've started using Neil's technique's. Thanks so much!

When I was 16 I would spend hours to learn how to manual. Asked my brother to teach me and he legit took out my rear brakes. Scraped my ass a few times but learnt to balance the bike with my body without slamming the brakes every time I thought I was gonna fall. It worked for me.

This was really good to see a person who doesn't have it dialed learning. Thx. Not sure if Tom ended up getting it after this video ended, but I couldn't help but think that when you were showing him the video replay on your phone that he had it perfect, he just needed to stay in that position for longer and wait for the front end to come up. Neil, thoughts?

I was sooooo looking forward to Tom nailing a long manual towards the end of this vid. But, as we all know, there's no magic one day way. Definitely saw progress though. Time to go practice!

This was absolutely awesome!!! I learned so much more from watching your coaching of Tom who seems to be just where I am. I'd like to see how he progresses with a little practice and move on to coaching on jumps and bunny hops as well. Find someone that doesn't know how. Please keep doing this format. There's something about watching a guy actually learn that's more instructive than watching a guy who knows how already. Thanks Neil and GMBN!

Wow! For me, the "dropping-L-technique" feels much more natural and safe than going first down and then back in two isolated movements. Moreover, you feel much less exhausted after trying multiple successive manuals and for some reason, the average distance of a manual at least doubled from the first try. Very helpful video! Thanks.

Good tutorial - Tom's technique improves, but 2 pointers he needs that I have found makes a big difference: look ahead rather than down, and keep your heels down.

I'm using Blake's manual machine but it doesn't work without Neil's L drop , D and B down and back , solid advice!

I am still a noob at manualling but my most successful practise session taught me one thing - you’ve got to be willing to fall off the back of your bike, otherwise you’ll never find the right position. Self preservation makes us not want to tip ourselves off backwards. But until I was willing to do that, I could never get the front wheel up properly. And that’s when you feather the rear brake. I’ve only looped the bike out once but was able to land on my feet and not stack it so that was good 😀 I also practise on grass for cushioning if I do mess it all up.
