He is right; focus on your down stroke.

I have found imagining my toes pointing forward my knees coming up to my belly button as a Target the best way to clean up my pedal Strokes. It's all about focusing on the balls of your feet your big toe!

Should mention more detail about cadence

I read somewhere that 99 percent of the power to propel the bike forward comes from the downstroke and the power generated on the upstroke is negligible.

johnberg181 yeah. simple biology like our jaw. we just don't have the muscle structure to pull our leg up or force our jaw down with any useful power regardless of training.

+johnberg181 Why use small muscles that are not meant for generating forward power for cycling instead of the large muscles like glutes, hamstrings etc.? Either way putting more power to the pedals increases your oxygen requirement.

Awesome video still legit x5 yrs later...when I go on rides so 20 miles out when cycling back my power fades really bad and cant sustain the tempo as well as before only comes in bursts could it be technique, nutrition, mental or something else?

Actually calves are used in downstroke while shins are used in upstroke.

Nobody ever talks about rhythm and the use of asymmetry. Pedaling is generally in even symmetrical strokes. Cut a "beat" out of one of a set of two and you have a faster rate. Do you need an explanation? I'm a musician and time is what everything is done in. Rhythm is the breaking down of time in rhythmic groupings. Pedaling is a time oriented practice no different than the horizontal or linear component of music.

If you don't get any additional power from pulling up then why use clipin pedals?

Being clipped in keeps your feet in the right position to maximize the power that you're able to produce and stops your feet from coming off when you try to spin to quickly especially when changing into easier gears (and making it way to easy by mistake and you're suddenly going from 80 rpm to 120 rpm)....myself coming from a mountain biking background I use flats on my road bike as that's what I'm used to and I don't like the feeling of being clipped in much..IMHO I think the gains from being clipped in are marginal

contrary to so many posters here I find pulling is very effective on hills at speed. My cadence is near 85 and I ride a vastly superior bike for comfort and speed. My feet tend to fly off the pedals above 60 rpm and at my fastest spin ( 135+ ) you just do not want your feet anywhere but glued to the pedals.

As well as your up stroke if you have clipless pedals. The up stroke increases pedaling efficiency by 30%.

"Retired Pro Cyclist" lmfao riding 6.8 kg bikes does not make you a Pro, riding and racing a 14 kg bike makes you a legend ..... So back to general 1950's we go. I am still keeping that 14 kg bike racing going , grow legs man 6.8 kg bikes are for kids man.
