Penn was heavily influenced by Peruvian photographer Martin Chambi. He even used his studio in Cuzco.

My mother worked at Vogue during WW2 doing layout and design working with Irving Penn as her boss. He once asked her if he could photograph her, but she declined saying she was too busy. However when she married my father (who she met during the War when his destroyer was briefly on the east coast from the Pacific) they had a Vogue staff photographer at their small intimate wedding of family and a few Vogue friends who had introduced them.

One of my models is studying photography in school and he has never heard of Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn. It is as if Ansel Adams is the only person to have owned a camera and the rest are irrelevant.

Somehow you managed to get my favourite darkroom master and lighting genius, my favourite artist and my favourite jazz musician in the same video. I’m a landscape and wildlife photography who likes to play with lighting and still life a few days a month. I don’t think that takes away from my appreciation of a true photographic genius. Penn also had wonderful dark side which was possibly fuelled by his sense of competition with Avedon. His darkroom work was phenomenal and if you look at the contact sheets of his work there was an amazing difference between his negs and his finished prints. His darkroom work was very private and he had many secrets about his work. I’m so glad you didn’t do the bee on lips image, somehow it’s like Otis Redding's 'Dock Of The Bay", far from his best work but the one he is most famous for. I’m also glad you pointed out you should learn the rules first and break them with an artistic purpose. Please, please, please can you do Josef Koudelka, to me the most powerful photographer of the 20th-21st centuries. Then if you want to throw Trent Park in I won’t complain.

Hey Joel great stuff, as you know all great artist build on the shoulders of those who came before them. That pic of Jean Patchett 1948 take a look at Goya's Duchess of Alba painting good catch. I knew Penn in N.Y. in the 70's even printed with him. Pretty amazing artist to say the least. Keep growing and breaking rules Joel you're talented beyond what you admit. Cheers,

Hello Joel, Love what you are doing with these videos. I just have a question: When you want to get inspired, How does that process work? Do you look at lighting and want to replicate it? Would love to know how it all works.

Irving Penn was a master of many techniques, printing, film manipulation, development techniques, but to me the most important technique was in the lighting. If your shoot indoors , lighting is more important than films, cameras papers ,etc Also check out Jan Groover, folks. She deserves it.
