232323C Some people find theory as interesting as application, people are different. When you use the word chord you're speaking theory. It's not overkill if it's what you're trying to learn and some people want to learn it, and I think most musicians are better off for it. Guys like Hendrix supposedly didn't know much about it, but how many people are that naturally gifted. There's nothing wrong with knowing the method behind the madness.

An E and G is not a power chord of any type; that's a minor third interval. Power chords are simply root and 5th intervals (2 1/2 steps apart) or a perfect 5th. So a D power chord is D (root) and A (5th). An inverted power chord puts the 5th under the root, technically creating a perfect 4th (A up to D). Inverting the chord visually on the fretboard (like you seem to have done in your question) doesn't necessarily result the "opposite" thing musically. Hope this makes sense!

I like the 2 note Inverted Power Chord, it's easy to Play and it's just like a Drop tuning shape, for me it's a little tricky because the people will try to guess of what you are doing, if it's Drop Tuning or inverted 😆

Thanks I'm still trying to make sense of this all, and I was just referring to the shape of a 2 note power chord simply being inverted... which creates a minor third? So for that example I gave earlier about the E & G, what type of other chords could I play with that?

The E-G dyad (two-note combo) can be played with Em (E-G-B) or C (C-E-G). You could also use it with Am7 (A-C-E-G) or even A7 (A-C#-E-G). The geometric inversions that you're referring to are interesting ideas, and are sometimes used in improvisation, but they're not musical inversions in the theoretical sense. A musical inversion is always the same two notes flipped around.

When you play: A:---1--- E:---3--- You are basically playing a minor third, which is the first building blocks to make a Gm chord. (You only need the fifth. In G, that's a D-note) To make it major, you move the third a half step up: A:---2--- E:---3---

Alright I'm a little confused. I'm trying to find out how 'inverted' power chords relate to other chords, and when I came across your video I realised that I must be thinking of the wrong thing. The type of chords I'm looking for are literally Inverted, not what you have in your video. For example say the G on the 4th string 5th fret and the E on the A string 7th fret. That by definition would be a inverted D power chord right? Where could I learn more about these types of chords? Cheers

I know you asked this years ago, but I gotta say I love using these! It's really just functioning as a G minor chord. but it is sharper and clearer than a full barre or open chord, so it's good for punk and other hard rock music that needs bite. Inversion really means using the same notes as before, but the lowest note is not the root note. So still playing a D and A but A is lower than D.
