I swear all these sat videos are them saying “I was really sad I got a 1300 taking my sat the first time as practice” like what omg I am so dumb
@jthomcres5 жыл бұрын
I'm well beyond high school now, but one thing I recall my SAT tutor telling me that made a HUGE difference: it doesn't test your knowledge - it tests your ability to reason. With the exception of a few very basic math concepts they expect you to know (area of a circle, that kind of thing), each question is trying to determine your ability to apply "common sense" to the limited information given. I remember struggling to get 1050-1100 until I understood this. My actual score was something like 1470 (on the 1600 scale) and 2180 (with the essay portion included, not sure if they do that anymore).
@alessandraannamarielopez87674 жыл бұрын
I know lmao. 1200 is my dream score but most of the people complaing about a 1300 are probably aspiring for a harder career path/college where a high sat /act is needed in order to get accepted.

Just a tip: TAKE THE OCTOBER SAT!!(my teacher who used to work for collegeboard 10+ years said that they make the october tests much easier since it’a near the college application season)
@annasmityukh49656 жыл бұрын
An easier test doesn’t mean a higher score. I took the June 2018 SAT and since it was one of the easiest tests in the last couple of years they curved it so much that people got much lower scores. A lot of people took the test and got more questions right than the first time they took it, but their score was actually lower. So basically it doesn’t really matter WHEN you take the SAT as long as you study a lot and go in confident
@hernatundag6016 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right, it depends on the individual if they study or not.
@hernatundag6016 жыл бұрын
Yes! If you prepare and study for it, it's going to be a breeze :)
@promistansloona48126 жыл бұрын
They fluntuate the test scores based on the difficulty, so it really doesn't matter.

Easier tests are worse though. Every incorrect answer takes off more points and results in lower scores even though you’ll get more questions right.

I feel like teachers and other school staff don't stress enough how important this test really is and they also don't really give you any resources or advice for the test. At least from my experience
@jthomcres5 жыл бұрын
Man, school's definitely changed over the years. I graduated back in 07, and our teachers HAMMERED this into us. I actually got a tutor for it and that was pretty common. We also happened to be the trial year for the asscrap essay section, which meant we had to take the thing twice: once for the classic math/reading 1600-scale, and once for the math/reading/writing 2400-scale. At least we got to pick the one we wanted to send off to colleges.

This is really stressful, and as English is not the first language I spoke I have to work twice as hard. Also, my grades are average, and trust when I say average I mean AVERAGE. Got a 860 the first time I took the SAT, I’m at least trying to reach the 1000 mark to go to a good college. I don’t aim for the major leagues, but I’ll see if the find something interesting in me. Man, I'm taking it in August. I scored 1440 o my second SAT practice test, but this little seventh grader at my school got 1520 on the actual test with little preparation. Not to mention he's really good at math and science competitions
@jthomcres5 жыл бұрын
The majority is logic, but to be honest, if you can score at least 1400 on the 1600-scale, then you're in the running for a perfect score. At that point, you have the test down pat, and it's more centered around sheer luck than anything else. This is coming from a dude who's been running an SAT course for many years now (not me). I asked him if he had ever gotten a perfect score in the dozens or hundreds of times he had taken it - he had not. One of my best friends did, perfect 2400 (back when the essay was a separate, third section) on his first try. Asshole, lol.
@nicolecampbell73435 жыл бұрын
I did all of my studying myself, and I used Khan Academy and was able to improve up to a 1490. Khan Academy took my PSAT score and worked with Collegeboard to take what questions I was missing and give me sets of those types of problems. Khan Academy gave me options to set up my own study schedules, and I took multiple practice tests on my own on weekends before the SAT. I probably should have taken more than one SAT, but in one shot I got a 1490 with no tutor and just Khan Academy. Great resource if your parents aren’t willing to get a tutor!!

Also 90% of the math is data and analysis, heart of algebra and passport to advanced math focus on studying for those first. I’m trying to bring up my math score so that’s what I’m doing. But with reading writing cancel out two answers and pick the best. Also on the grammar/writing portion you shouldn’t answer “none of the above” more than 6 times thats what I was told by my tutor is best. Good luck! Greg Smith, I was wondering if you scored higher on math or english the first time you took it. Im fine for math, but I cant seem to raise my score in english at all.
@CollegeAdvisor6 жыл бұрын
I was the same way. For English, like I said in the video, Mike Barrett's 'black book' is a MUST read (link in description). The English section seems like it can be subjective at times, but Mike says that because the test is standardized and the College Board could get sued for subjective answers, there is ALWAYS an objectively true answer, and he has lots of practice questions that get you into this 'objective' mindset. First time I scored 690 on the reading section, second time I bumped that up to 740 using his book!

I also took the June SAT but got a kinda good score. Apparently the curve for equalizing the test made people's score lower than it should be. The questions were easier than previous SATs so every wrong answer had more weight than usual. Death Striker Don’t take this the wrong way, but you might want to consider a trade school. College is not for a everyone and it’s very overrated and expensive unless you plan on being a doctor or lawyer, engineer, etc. the time and money spent on college could be utilized by earning while you’re learning a trade. For example you could learn welding, within four years out of high school you could be earning $50-100 an hour with more work than you can handle. You’d have no college loans, have a skill for life that you can get a job anywhere in the world and likely be earning more than your friends who go the college route. Or start your own business now while you’re young.

This channel is sponsored by Crimson, and I do talk about their services, but if you watch past the "ad," I admit that many people cannot afford / do not want to pay for tutoring, and give tips on how I self-studied for the SAT. You should revisit this section of the video, I think you would find it helpful! :)

Don't give up. Most schools, including Princeton, only care about your highest score-- even those that require you send all of your scores, really only care about your highest one. You got it!

Morgan k When the test was scored the college board noticed how well everyone did and put a huge curve on it. So typically if you miss one question on math, for example, you get 800 still. The curve was so huge that getting one wrong gave you a 770 instead. Basically, the test was easier than usual, so they graded harder. This was only for the June SAT though. And this is just from what I've heard. Hopefully this comment helped:)

I got a 1540 on my SAT in November (800 Math, 740 R/W), and I just wanna add some perspective to the honestly kinda bs opening No matter what your SAT score is, colleges are gonna spam your email begging you to go to their school, it is the way it is. You may get scholarship offerings, but it will be from lower tier schools that won't give as good of an education, have less infrastructure, and probably wouldn't be worth your time. The reason they are giving scholarship offerings is because they want you, since you are much smarter than the average student their, and students like you would make them look better. Also, a perfect SAT won't get you into your dream college. If you are going for a really good school (like a top 40 for example), they won't accept you over a 1600. You need good grades, good EC's and good essays on top of that score. It is only one aspect to your admissions. If you are on the edge, a good score might be the difference maker, but overall as long as your score is decent, a 1600 won't make or break your application Also, half the schools are test optional now lol

@@tiffanymason7805 SAT scores don't change dramatically based on knowledge accrued in high school, but rather based on knowledge of the test and its subtleties. Studying for it is relatively impractical, but PRACTICING for it, especially alongside instruction like that found in this video, is essential.

No, Khan Academy is great for learning the material that shows up on the SAT. Their SAT training program is not good though. The reason why is because it is sponsored by CollegeBoard who oversees the material KhanAcademy can teach in that program and how it’s taught. They want him to teach it the way their book teaches, which is basically “No, this answer is wrong because it’s wrong, and we won’t tell you why.” - Before KA linked up with CollegeBoard, KA would teach you little tricks on how to increase your score, usually tricks that only wealthy people can afford to learn because they hire expensive SAT prep tutors (which is why wealthy students score much higher).
@tanishreviewsfilm22236 жыл бұрын
Bradley Eversley Well, it does give an explanation after answering every question. But you are right. I don't see any tricks on there. I don't know if there were any before on KA

I am cannot afford to buy anything due to lack of clearance, but do wish to ask whether reaources like library Princeton Review books/ Kaplan Prep books and online resources like Kahn Academy are good substitutes. I want to know if anything like said sources also exist and you would recommend. (My English is garbage, forgive me).

Hey Greg! You just got a new subscriber!!! Also, I want some help/advice on the SAT (or some type of guidance). I'm at that stage between Sophomore and Junior year, and my SAT is scheduled for August. I know I'll get an 800 in math, but I need some advice to strengthen my reading and grammar skills (without the books). I'm currently getting around a 1550 on practice SAT tests from collegeboard, but want to improve to around 1580 so I have some extra room in case I don't do as well on the actual test. Personally, I'm a pretty quick reader, and will have around 15 minutes to spare after the reading section, but I don't know what's a good method for checking my work. I want to check all 52 questions in case there's one I make a stupid mistake on, but I just don't have the time to go in-depth checking on all 52 questions. My other idea is to just spend more time on the problems so that I don't make a mistake, but there's always those 3-5 problems that leave you stuck between two choices. What do I do when this happens? Lastly, I'm taking the SAT with essay, but I've never practiced the essay before. I've seen the prompts and the basic idea of the essay, as well as some perfect essays. It seems easy enough, but I don't really know what score I'd get. I'm not that good at essay writing, but I'm sure I'd be able to formulate a strong argument and thesis in the time given, but my language and word choice would likely be quite dull. How many points would you suspect I would get? (I'm guessing 7 on argument, 6 on reading, and 5 on writing?).

Is it possible to get into a more prestigious college with a high SAT score but a low GPA? I'm banking on getting a 1470 min on my SAT next month (i'm a junior), but i've slacked off a lot in school and my weighted GPA is only a 3.8. I'm hoping to raise my GPA to a 4.0 though by the end of the semester.

No Offense Bro since I Automatically have respect for Ivy League Students and I know you were born in a advantageous family and community. But You got a silver spoon that a person like me from a monoparentale Family That makes less than 30K per year like me has. These Private Tutors That you were determined to get despite your parents telling you otherwise shows how economically privileged you are that these video only really applies to well off financially kids who can drop money on tutors like that easily. Thank you for the other tips, but you pissed me off with that one because you know it was probably rare for less fortunate kids to get tutors thus hints why we found your video.
@CollegeAdvisor6 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanks for your comment. You're right, I come from a rather privileged community and sometimes I don't highlight that enough in my videos. The fact that I was given better college guidance counselors, teachers, etc. is in fact one of my primary motivations for starting this channel-- to "balance the playing field," aka give out free information on college admissions that most guidance counselors don't want on the Internet. But, another motivation, is money... that's how the world works. Princeton works me hard, and it's hard to find the time, let alone the motivation to put these videos out. So having Crimson sponsor the video helps me out financially. But, you'll notice that right after I talk about Princeton, I give a roadmap for students self-studying for the SAT, which is what I did to prepare for the test. Whether you can afford Crimson or not, my goal is to give you guys insights about college admissions that people in my position usually don't. I'm sorry about the ad, I hope you revisit my channel and can benefit from the information I provide. Best of luck to you! - Greg
