Hydrogen peroxide is great for cleansing seeds for pre germination. Maybe 4 hours soak tops. I've recently discovered that over soaking old seeds in 3% hydrogen peroxide causes root burn on some sprouts. So I went to a 3 hour hydrogen peroxide soak and I'm having much better results. For old seeds I soak in a solution with other goodies immediately after the h202 soak. I'll try diluting it to 1% then adding the other stuff i'm currently using. I am currently going through my old seed selection to preserve what I can.

This video just came up in recommended for me. I love science and I love cannabis, so this channel is perfect for me. I am all for learning how to grow better. A 1% solution of h2o2 does so much for a seed! Essentually it becomes water and oxygen. I wonder what is happening on a microscopic level when the oxygen atom splits from the h2o2. I already use Rapid Rooters, but this just makes it even better. I will implement it immediately. The best part is how effective it is with the older seeds. Just wow. You have a new sub.
@DeBaccoUniversity2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the subscription, be sure to tell others about the channel as well. The oxygen essentially becomes oxygen gas and is released into the atmosphere which is why if you apply it to soil and it bubbles these are oxygen gas bubbles.

I've been using a similar method for older seed germination. I use the 3% solution but only soak for 6 hours. Then the seeds go into sterilized plastic sandwich bags with paper towel and a few drops of bottled water. Warm soak helps too. I put our seeds on our satellite receiver that stays warm. Although larger scale, a seed mat would hold temp better.

As a retired food technologists, if you get 35% peroxide ‘burn’ as seen early in this video by my learned colleague, be it burn on your fingers or any place, almost instant relief is brought about by liquid egg albumen (egg whites) on the affected area. Great advice on the use of peroxide, but if I may mention something: the equations seem incorrect to me. The way I understand it (although not a scientist) is that the disinfecting and oxygenation power of hydrogen peroxide comes from the release of atomic oxygen in its nascent form. My understanding is that it's 2 O that's released, not O2. O2 is 'just' common oxygen ;) Respectfully suggested :)
@DeBaccoUniversity2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct, but two oxygen's released independent often come together to the more stable form of O2. The actual breakdown chemistry was more detail than intended for the video, but this is what actually happens;-)

Soak the seeds directly in the H2O2 solution for about 2-4hours and then transfer to moistened substrate and water in with the H2O2 solution. Avoid the paper towel as this will reduce root disturbance and time/labor.

It works so well. Even less than 1% is good. I add 3-5 drops into a 1oz shotglass of water. That mix then soaks my seeds for 1 day. Boom! germination right off the bat. It also makes the seed coat weaker so you don't get helmet head. This is amost too good to be true, but it works!

Anyone wondering per 250 ml water add 125 ml hydrogen peroxide that's 3%. 1 litre/1000ml water to 500 ml hydrogen peroxide that's 3% concentrated.

Have you looked into ethylene gas for starting your seeds? I read a study on it, it seemed to help the plant in the long run. Helping with size and rebound. The study showed gassing the seeds in the dark during germination is what caused the increased growth. I would love to get your opinion on this.

Hey Matt, I've recently become curious about fulvic acids and how they effect cannabis. Do you have any videos touching on humic or fulvic acids? Thanks for your time, great video 🙋♂️🙏

wow, i got some seeds for 2 days nothing happened with my original method off germination "im total noobie at this" i saw a video saying rock wool is good for germination so i got some in one day they all have germinated and im so so happy to see a root growing and angled them down into the rock wool got some fertilser coming as well love your vids just discovered them very informative and love the no nonesense approach and ony data that is usefull thank you 😍

So, I’ve been doing this germ method for over 20 yrs now. Interesting you did not go into detail as to what is going on. That extra oxygen molecule plays a very important part to this approach.

i soak seeds in water with a bit of 3% peroxide I never measure it. I use it because the seeds need oxygen in order to germinate. In the past i just put them in a jar of water but found none germinated. I barely cover the seeds just set them on the countertop and make sure the water doesn't evaporate. I usually wait till the seam pops then transfer to soil. This varies if using very old seeds. Then if they don't pop then use plyers to put pressure on the seam to split it. This works sometimes.
@DeBaccoUniversity2 жыл бұрын
Add a little water to dilute it as this will make your bottle last longer and could improve your germination rates.

wouldn't it just be easier to say 2 parts water to 1 part 3% H202? ... or probably 1 to 1 would be good as you'd have 1 and 1/2% solution. wonder what watering occasionally at this level would do. I do know i've added much more than recommended in hydroponics and the roots stay super healthy.

I definitely see the benefits of using hydrogen peroxide to add oxygen and kill bad microbes. My question is will it kill beneficial microbes particularly any innoculants used during the germination process?
@Freedom_Born2 жыл бұрын
A 1% solution shouldn’t harm inoculates during germ’ irrespective of the method. Since I’m guessing you’re planting seed direct to soil with inoculates mixed in (?).
@streetfighter01772 жыл бұрын
This is the sterile process and the bacteria is the next step of the lines of protection for the roots. I am nobody lol. Hopefully this helps also..
@DeBaccoUniversity2 жыл бұрын
There are few microbial associations in the early stages and the peroxide quickly breaks down so the benefits should outweigh the risks to inoculations.

Hard to compete with that success rate, but this may be helpful for difficult to germinate seeds.

Really excellent content. I have been using 3% hydogen peroxide for nearly 50 years as part of my gerination process for even annual ryegrass which i use as a nurse crop of mycorrhiza. sometimes i start with a quick salt water plunge (50,000 to 200000 ppm)for 20 minutes or so as an additional surface sterilizing procedure as the osmotic pressure will pull some water from the seed and pull more pathogens to the surface plus it halo primes the seed for later salt tolerance. I then rinse and pour 3% aka 30,000ppm h2o2 to cover the seeds. Usually 30 minutes to 3 hours, i add distilled or ro water to dilute 4 to 1 up to 10 to one, but based on your presentation, i may compare my method against the 1 % as your method is simpler. I often have seeds popping within 12 hours. I grimace when i see wet paper towel or the floating method get a million youtube views. Sometime root hairs get stuck in the paper towel. I personally know a seed is viable when i see it soak and sink and am wary of immature less developed floaters. I still use old film containers set on top of a flourescent shop light. Always 90% plus germination within a day. I simply plant immediately as soon as I seed the radicle starts to erupt from the seed.the longer one waits the greater risk of damage. I never get pathogenic fuzz from a diluted peroxid soak, plus the peroxide chemically etches the seed coat and the extra oxygen diffuse into the seed

BTW, an O2 increase of only 10ppm has some efficacy in reducing disease and I think there are lots of studies using 30 to 100 ppm in hydroponic solutions but I have to go research this.
@jamescampbell10608 ай бұрын
We will just start with the simple answer. There are 13,360mg of O2 in 1 quart of 3% H2O2. So 1% is 4,453.33 ppm. My guess it could be diluted anothe 10 x and it would still work. I am thinking a 30 minute to 3 hour soak at 1% or even 3% would flash sterilize the seed coat and probably chemically scour the seed coat. I soaked ryegrain in 3% for 3 hours the other day and I could see bubbles. Then I just added two matching volumes of water to bring the seed soak solution to 1 percent as in your instructions. 1 day later i could see root radicles start to break thru the coat so,I immediately rinsed and planted while the seeds were easy to handle.
@jamescampbell10608 ай бұрын
Later this year, I am going to buy some bulk Hemp seeds to enlarge the experimentation as ryegrain and ryegrass are not cannabis
