I just found one in decent shape that had been put on the curb. It just needed a cleaning and oil. It also came with many accessories that attach to the presser foot. Some folks have no compassion for antiques . I am happy to have given it a new home. Thanks for demonstrating how it is threaded.

Wonderful! I've just started out on my journey to repair my Ruby New Home machine and this has been very helpful. I knew I was missing parts but not what they looked like, and since the bones of our machines look similar now I might be able to recognize what I need if I see it. It's a shame there isn't more information about these machines. No one in my town will even look at an antique machine if it isn't a singer so I'm having to piece things together myself.

I believe that the Ruby and my machine are basically the same.

@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns They absolutely look basically identical. Unfortunately I’m missing the bobbin and shuttle, as well as the foot, but hopefully they’ll turn up on eBay for me eventually. It’s a beautiful machine and I hope to be able to use it someday

I've learned a lot from watching your video. I have a similar, although older machine also from Orange County in Massachusetts and so far I haven't worked out how to wind the bobbin or sew with it. It has many features in common with yours, although it is a hand crank but I feel more confident I'll get it working now. Thank you!

Mine is called a new ideal and it's missing the screw on the bobbin threader and detention guide on top of the machine right after the thread. It's interesting how you stop the sewing motion on this machine. I would love to see more of your videos

I have a 1913 version - slightly different threading on the front faceplate. Have no treadle, so I bought a motor kit from Ali Express. The motor is way too fast on 230 Volts so I run it off 115 Volts or a Triac dimmer. Beautiful machine.... 😊❤. Oh, and it works fine with ordinary sewing machine needles, just drop them down 2..3 mm.

Yes, I use the trick of dropping the needle down a little too.

Wonderful video! I recently got the “new ideal” labeled version of this machine. I see holes to add oil but I don’t want to put oil somewhere it should be. Hoping you have some insight, thanks!
@CurioByBSpokeDesigns Жыл бұрын
I'll take a look at the manual, but I think it's safe to oil any of the oil holes. I did go overboard and oiled everywhere without issue.

This was wonderful! I just picked up a “New Companion” machine which seems to be running fine however the screw that adjusts the stitch length is missing? Plus I’m unsure if other parts associated with the screw are missing as well? Any ideas? Cheers and thank you for this video.

There are vintage sewing machine parts specialists around the world. Join some Facebook VSM groups. Someone there will know where you can source parts.

Thank you so so much for this video. So very informative! I have my aunts New Home. Was trying to decipher its age. It has the rose design and is a bit different than the one you have. The stitch length lever is on the bottom below the bobbin threader and not on the actual machine. Any thoughts on its age? Your threading of the bobbin and machine was so easy to understand! Thank you again.

if you google "new home sewing machine serial number lookup" you can look up the serial number to find out how old it is. Needlebar . org has a page which will help you identify the model.

@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns I could not locate a serial number anywhere on the machine.

@@animalnurse1964 Look on the base of the sewing machine or on the bottom. There should be a plate there with 5 numbers. Some of them are preceded by a letter in front

thanks for your videos. I have just acquired a 1904 Home Companion machine as my first project. It's not in bad condition but would you still clean it with sewing machine oil and is there a particularly 'good' oil available in the UK? Hope you don't mind me asking...
@CurioByBSpokeDesigns4 жыл бұрын
Sewing machine oil is the safest thing to use. It's the one thing that the manufacturers knew would be spilled on it and not damage the finish. Any good sewing machine oil will do. I get mine from a sewing machine shop for about £7 a litre and it lasts an age! Sewing machine oil is sewing machine oil - regardless of brand. Just make sure that it is clear - if it has yellowed, it's likely to have been contaminated. Enjoy your project and please let me know how you get on.

Thank very much, that's really useful. Hopefully I won't mess it up...I'll let you know! Off to source some Sewing Machine oil now :)

@@Willapip I also just acquired a 1909 Home Companion, but a hand crank machine. It is next on my list to sort out. It needs a lot of work, but it's always enjoyable. And as the poster says, buy plenty of oil. I also get a litre for about £7. Its the best way to buy it. Good luck.

What's the issue? If it's not picking up the bobbin thread you may need to adjust the height of your needle. It's normal on these machines.
