I'd say the biggest issues for being "Realistic", is that AEGIS will not engage SCUDs in most cases, because they're extremely inaccurate and the system won't waste ordinance on them unless they're actually going to hit the fleet, and the carrier would have planes up especially if they're going that close to shore. Patriot has been able to distinguish SCUDs that are a threat from SCUDs that are definitely going to miss since like, the early 2000s
@grimreapers Жыл бұрын
Yes but the Scud CEP allows them to be accurate enough to land the missile within the foot print of the CSG. At least in game that's true anyway.
@McAllisterCo Жыл бұрын
Aegis calculates where the missiles will land while still in flight. That’s how they can announce a missile was fired at a particular area in Israel even though it was intercepted by an Arleigh-Burke over the Red Sea. In fact 4 days ago the US ship Mason had two “ballistic missile’s” fired at IT from Yemen (after it intervened in the hijacking of commercial ship Central Park) and judged them as not a threat so let them harmlessly splash into the water less than ten miles from the ship. The captain explicitly said they assessed them as not a threat so did not bother firing at them.
@McAllisterCo Жыл бұрын
Also Aegis (as well as patriot) will automatically identify a threat based on known characteristics. So not only do they know where it will land they know exactly what missile it is just a few seconds after launch.

What happened to having a Ticonderoga in the group? Usually there is at least 1 cuiser in a carrier group and they carry more missiles than Arleigh Burks. My only real issues is that and the fact that Aegis is so accurate it can identify the type of incoming weapon systems based on many factors. The Aegis system is honestly terrifying at how good it is as it actually links to all the ships and their radar systems as well as aircraft. The weapon systems are all links together too. Food for thought, AEGIS can track the missiles as they reach their apex and begin descending. It can predict where the missile will land down to singular ft. Not meters, not yards, FEET and INCHES. So it would know long before the SCUDS reached minimum intercept range whether or not they are a threat. Thats real life though. DCS doesn't have the ability to model everything. Source is Habitual Linecrosser btw, he works in U.S. Air Defense and knows a lot about the AEGIS. And what he has been allowed to tell his viewers about it (unclassified) has made clear just how terrifying a defense AND offense system it is. Look him up on YT!
@Jeffrey.1978 Жыл бұрын
@ObiWanShinobi917 - I completely agree with you. The FC's and FCA's on ship use to sit and tell me about AEGIS and the SPY radar system when I visited them in the CIC on my mid-watch. Most of the time they had to remind me by starting their sentences with, "This is classified, so don't repeat it." The use to joke and call AEGIS a mini "Skynet" system within its own. 😆 Since DCS does not model EW capabilities that exist on ships at all, another huge aspect to missile and drone defense is the AN/SLQ-32 EW system. In some ways it was as mind boggling what it could do as the AEGIS combat weapons system and the SPY radar system could. A lot of threats can be defeated without having to use a missile.

7:54 cap there’s a fundamental flaw with Your logic regarding the unguided stuff and the scuds. Aegis can predict where the incoming ordinance will land and will selectively engage targets based on the threat level they pose. (Similar to how iron dome works against the rockets fired by hamas and how patriot does as well) so the csg wouldn’t engage the ones that aren’t threats, we have seen this in real life with this exact situation, they fired ballistic missiles at an arleigh Burke that was responding to the pirate attack and missed, the ship knew they weren’t gonna hit so it didn’t hit the missiles
@grimreapers Жыл бұрын

You said in the video “in real life they would have to fire as well because they couldn’t risk it” and I think everybody just wants to clarify with you that isn’t the case in real life. @92HazelMocha Жыл бұрын
@@Nr15121It wouldn't because these are too close. If Cap had set the scuds to hit a target ten miles from the CSG (which is what happened irl) they wouldn't have attempted the intercept. In this scenario the CSG was in the beaten zone and so aegis would certainly have launched to intercept.
@pnkemp Жыл бұрын
I think Cap is right on this one. The example last week was a solo US ship so it could tell it was not at risk and so didn't fire. Defending a CSG the CGs and DDGs will have to defend the whole area, lest a carrier, oiler, or other ship get hit. @@grimreapers

This map represents the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, in South Sinai Governorate, on the coastal strip along the Red Sea. Sharm El Sheikh is an Egyptian city on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula so this map isn't Yemen and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait is way farther to the south where Yemens true location is. Why did you use Egypt to represent Yemen?
@realseif4759 Жыл бұрын
This map consists of Egypt, Palestine and small parts of Syria and Jordan. It doesn't extend down to Yemen

"fire ballistic missiles at the near location of a moving carrier group, the carrier group has no choice just to shoot those down". This is incorrect. AEGIS can classify the threat based on a HUGE range of parameters, and for ballistic missiles, can also tell the relative location that these munitions will land in. This can be showcased by the recent Houthi / Yemen strike towards a US cruiser that didn't need to shoot the missile down, as they detected it would not land close enough to justify shooting it down, and that was only a miss by 10+ miles or so.

But these were not aimed ten miles from the CSG, the CSG in this case was in the beaten zone for the scuds so AEGIS would definitely attempt to intercept.
@mecampbell30 Жыл бұрын
@@92HazelMocha More importantly DCS can't do that so it's kind of irrelevant.
@92HazelMocha Жыл бұрын
@@mecampbell30Actually DCS *does* do this. The AEGIS in the Sim (and AFAIK all sams) operate based on threat levels. The radar sees a contact, assess its threat level based on what the contact is and interceptors available and responds accordingly. It's definitely not as good as real sam systems (especially 21st century ones) but it does work on the same principle. This is why ships will fire fewer interceptors at shorter ranges the lower the number of sams they have remaining.

He's talking about in game.. AEGIS in game isn't as smart as it is irl
@grimreapers Жыл бұрын
Yes but the Scud CEP allows them to be accurate enough to land the missile within the foot print of the CSG. At least in game that's true anyway.

You start off by saying you want it more realistic but won’t have SuperHornets or F-35C already airborne.
@TFY-v8l Жыл бұрын
You wouldn't want fighters airborne while the ships are engaging missiles, friendly fire is always possible with missiles with active radar
