Johann Adam Hiller, a student of his - Cantor from Thomaskirche, Leipzig, and Gerber, in his "Tonkünstlerlexikon", and Forkel (Bach biography, 1802) tells us that HOMILIUS studied with Johann Sebastian Bach. This is doubted because Bach did not write the important recommendations when in 1741 Homilius applied as organist to the position of organist of the Saint Peter's church in Bautzen. The recommendation was not sent by Bach but by a student of Bach, Johann Schneider.
Homilius was rejected. In 1742 he became organist of the "Frauenkirche" in Dresden. (Wilhelm Friedemann Bach also applies for this position) Homilius was involved in the planning for this famous instrument made by Gottfried Silbermann, with a disposition of 43 registers, inaugurated by Bach himself, in 1736. In 1755 he was appointed Cantor of the "Kreuzkirche" and also music director of both churches, plus the "Sophienkirche".
HOMILIUS was greatly appreciated for his good taste. Moreover, he was generally recognized as a great composer and he was also famous as an organist.
Homilius enriched the organ literature with some beautiful choral preludes for organ solo. The now recorded, 'Hilf, Herr Jesu, lass gelingen' has become one of the most beautiful and original choral preludes of his time. The left-hand plays the choral melody, while the right-hand plays a fast [contra] musical line.
HOMILIUS died in Dresden on June 2, 1785, and left a great oeuvre, including for organ 67 choral preludes and various trios.
