Handel scored his Water Music for a relatively large orchestra, making it suitable for outdoor performances with strings, reed players, mainly oboes and bassoons in the triple line-up, with reinforcement of horns, trumpets, and drums
The music is suitable for arranging for the organ and I was happy to make this arrangement.
At about 8 p.m. on Wednesday, 17 July 1717, King George I (1660-1727) and several aristocrats boarded a royal barge at Whitehall Palace, for an excursion up the Thames toward Chelsea.
The rising tide propelled the barge upstream without rowing. Another barge, provided by the City of London, contained about 50 musicians who performed Handel's music
Many Londoners also took to the river to hear the concert.
On arriving at Chelsea, the king left his barge, then returned to it at about 11 p.m. for the return trip. The king was so pleased with Water Music that he ordered it to be repeated at least three times, both on the trip upstream to Chelsea and on the return until he landed again at Whitehall.
Probably one of the reasons for King George to order the Water Music from Handel was to show his people that he, as a King, is still able to organize major events with grandeur.
And also to show the crown prince that he has to be patient in order to succeed his father.
He ruled England and Ireland from 1714-1727.

G.F. Handel instrumenteerde zijn Water Music voor een relatief groot orkest, waardoor het geschikt is voor buitenoptreden met strijkers, rietblazers, voornamelijk hobo's en fagotten in driedubbele bezetting, met versterking van hoorns, trompetten en trommels
De muziek is geschikt om te arrangeren voor orgel en het gaf me voldoening deze bewerking te maken.
Om ongeveer 20.00 uur op woensdag 17 juli 1717 stapten koning George I (1660-1727) en verschillende aristocraten aan boord van het koninklijk schip in Whitehall Palace voor een excursie over de Theems richting Chelsea.
De vloed bracht het schip stroomopwaarts voort zonder te roeien.
Een ander schip, verzorgd door de City of London, bevatte ongeveer 50 muzikanten die Händels muziek uitvoerden.
Aan de oevers van de Theems en op het water was het een drukte van belang met mensen die het concert wilden meemaken.
Bij aankomst in Chelsea verliet de koning zijn schip en keerde er omstreeks 23.00 uur naar terug voor de terugreis.
De koning was zo blij met zijn Water Music dat hij beval het minstens drie keer te herhalen, zowel op de reis stroomopwaarts naar Chelsea als bij de terugkeer bij Whitehall.
Waarschijnlijk was een van de redenen voor Koning George om bij Handel de Water Music te bestellen om aan zijn onderdanen te laten zien dat hij nog steeds in staat is om grote gebeurtenissen met grandeur te organiseren. En zo tevens de kroonprins te laten zien dat hij geduldig moet zijn om zijn vader op te volgen.
