Johann Christian KITTEL (1732-1809) The last student from J. S. Bach, composed 16 Präludien for organ in outstanding quality.
These works are not as popular as it should be in my opinion.
Kittel was born and died in Erfurt. He first studied with Jakob Adlung.
He moved to Leipzig in 1748 where Kittel was a favorite - and the last - student of Johann Sebastian in the last two years of Bach's life.
In 1751 Kittel was appointed organist and teacher in Langensalza,
1756 Kittel returned to Erfurt to become organist of the Barfüßerkirche.
In 1762 Kittel moved to the Predigerkirche in Erfurt.
Kittel refused many generous offers and stayed in Erfurt for the rest of his life. In 1790, Kittel received an invitation from Duchess Anna Amalia of Saxen-Weimar to travel to Italy, but Kittel stayed in Erfurt for the rest of his life.
He played many evening recitals there and became famous as a virtuoso organist, which you can hear in his Preludes, one of which has now been uploaded to KZbin.
Goethe, Herder, and Wieland all went to his concerts to hear him play.
Kittel made a concert tour to Hamburg in 1800.
He stayed in Hamburg for a year to work on the chorale book for Schleswig-Holstein.
Kittel was influenced by the contemporary gallant style. In that gallant style, the emphasis was on melody. It is extremely fascinating to listen to this Präludium inC major, where Kittel masterfully captures this Galant ideal.
