This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about Vertical Improvisation. This is an approach to improvising where you think in terms of 'chords' rather than 'scales' or 'modes'. This makes improvising much simpler. You no longer need to memorise scores of esoteric scales and Ancient Greek words. You just need to arpeggiate the chords and connect them with passing notes. Then by adding a few more simple techniques you can create a really sophisticated solo - and all without using a single scale!

Incredible explanation!! I’m a firm believer of foundational learning and this is a perfect example that cuts all the noise and gets to the root of learning a skill. Bravo 👏

This is a great video and personally I find this approach much easier to manage than worrying about different modes etc and it gives a real jazzy sound that scale focused playing can sometimes lack. I’m surprised you hadn’t already addressed this topic years ago. Again, great video as always.

I shall restrict myself to only 2 "sources" about Jazz Piano. For at least one year. Maybe two. Yours and Open Studio (Peter Martin & Adam Maness). Information overload is the ennemy. Well, one of them. Thank you so much for your work and generosity, man! PS : "repetition", you said? "...understand why *the the* thing you are playing sounds good..." ;) ;)

Yes! Great. Thanks. Naturally this has become the way, natural, so to speak...... ... and after some "arrogant" waste of time :) of mine... searching and striving a bit more "lossly" on other experiments... that's the way, it seems... Another beautiful simple thing and exercise is playing the arpegio from a half tone below : (B)CEGB If you like: "semi-enclosing" 😂😅the tonic or the last note, if we are descending (Aflat)GEC

This is absolutely amazing! So informative, you're a saint for posting this for free! I wanted to ask though, when improvising off of a Jazz melody would the foundation be the same, or would you approach in a different way? Thanks! 🙂
