Thank you Kent! This is so useful letting us understand the big picture and how to practice the foundations of swinging loose!

Hi Kent. It's always good to see one of your new videos. You're looking good. I've been tuning in to some of your older lessons when I can, and printing out some of your arrangements and exercises. Like a box of Cracker Jacks, sometimes there's a prize inside, like the McCoy Tyner licks transcribed and transposed to multiple keys, or the arrangements on the Irish National Anthem, Danny Boy, including one transcription of a swinging late night session in Salt Lake of the Mormon Tabernacles. You've provided a treasure chest on your website, all there for any aspiring Jazzbo to stumble over. I've started a notebook, but haven't done much practicing, yet. I'll get there soon, right after I clean my desk (my wife can read upside-down, but parentheses slow her down.) It's always good to see you, and I'm glad that you're back at the ranch. Florida's no place for cats like us. Soon that stiff in Tallahassee will outlaw swinging as they'll believe it's a deviant act, and ban all jazz playing but smooth jazz.

Yes, I agree. Thanks for the great comment. Actually this is an older video that I reposted for those who missed seeing it.

@@KentHewittpiano88 Thank you, my friend. I appreciate it. I watched another video, maybe reposted, about the chord exercises around the Circle of IVs or Vs. You've written these down, and they are also a valuable collection of studies. To have them accurately transcribed into 12 keys is a great convenience. Thanks again.

Kent, I've been on the fence about buying your book. Today's video won me over. Well done!

Piano is such a great instrument. I played trombone in high school many years ago. My role was equivalent to your left hand. Let me get to my question... Can your lessons benefit a trombonist or is the trombone a completely different beast from a music theory perspective? (I think I know the answer but I'd love to hear your thoughts.) Thank you.

I understand that the modes are the same scale starting on different notes. But in this example, why play the C scale over the chords? Is it because the key signature-no sharps or flats-is the key of C?
@KentHewittpiano88

I used the key of C because it's the easiest to start with and understand. So the modes would be built on that scale. Each key would have its own unique modal scales built on its scale, but concepts the same as key of C.

True story: when I was teenager my classical teacher wanted to broaden my music in two ways (play some pop on the side and I will help you with it and try to compose some songs). For #1 I tried feebly Rocky Raccoon and Let it be, for #2 I sat by the piano, threw my index at the piano and scribbled 6-8 quarter notes on a music sheet, what a disaster that was. I should have told her why don’t you invite me to some jazz clubs and we jam together and you show me leading tones and some harmonic progressions? 😂
