The way I remember the notes on the lines above and below is that the notes in the gaps, FACE, become the notes ON the lines when they are below and above. The notes on the lines, EGBDF, are now the notes BETWEEN the lines when below and above. So from the top line F upwards the next line is A then C then E. If you don’t understand my explanation just write it all out and have a look.

To answer my own questions, learning this is a good way to learn how to write tunes I guess? If you come up with a decent melody for part A, then make up an 'reply' for Part B, repeat Part A and a slightly different answer for the last part to 'close up' the tune.

You did a great job of teaching that Mike. Not the easiest thing to teach but you did well. Questions - when would you do such a thing? After the 'pure' tune has been played once? Would an audience not get annoyed about the musicians messing with a tune they love?

Not at all, Jimi Hendrix ( for example) never played a song or tune the same way every time he played it. The true sign of musicianship is being able to place extra notes and chords that relate to the beat or rhythm and overall sound quality of a song but are slightly different. The more you mix it up, the more you can smile when you play it differently than before. And anyone listening will notice the experience you have gained with playing for a longer time within that coordinated change.🎻Try it, it's fun.😊
