A dominant cycle is comprised of a series of dominant chords resolving down a fifth, one to the next, which will eventually take you through all the keys. Dominant cycles can be found in the tunes I Got Rhythm, Sweet Georgia Brown and Jordu, among others. In this video I explain and demonstrate simple but effective patterns that take you through the cycle, leading to enhanced key fluency and an intuitive understanding of dominant resolution.

Yeah Chase. Good job teaching. Because the last thing you played showed end result-creative use of the source material.

I know a lot of people struggle with connecting theoretical information or rote repetition to the creative process, but you've got to learn the language if you hope to use it artfully.

Yes! IMO in our practice times we should be replacing all Arbans and Clarke arpeggio and flexibility and fingering exercises with exercises that ALSO emphasize improv at the same time, like this. We trumpeters have made technical exercises the point of our practice when music (improv or anything else) should be at least 50% of our practice.

I suggest my students practice the Clarke Technical Studies (at least #2) in all modes. That makes them more of a mindful and relevant exercise.

@@chasesanborn hi by modes do you mean as Clarke 2 as written in major, diminished, minor, pentatonic and blues? That sounds awesome.

Hi Chase, thanks for these lessons! On the fast descending bebop scales @4:00 are you soft tonging every note?
@chasesanborn
@chasesanborn 4 ай бұрын
I generally use a alternating combination of legato tonguing and slurring, with tongue strokes on the upbeats. I'll have a video on that at some point.

BEBOP SCALE THROUGH THE CYCLE IS WHAT I HEAR MOST 40'S and 50's bebop.what happens if you increse the intervals and speed up the tempo? Say 16th or 32nd. Notes with no resolutin. I think this is what the late Eric Dolphy does on ALTO SAX!

I guess one should try it and see if you sound like Dolphy...
