It makes sense in character too. In the donut licking video that she's referencing, Ariana says she hates America. When Tatianna says she loves America and then can only give vague reasons why, it feels intentional.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is choosing to impersonate a person who they highly respect and don’t want to offend. The point of snatch game already primarily being about comedy and pretty much not all concerned with accurate impersonation, choosing a person who you don’t mind making fun of/is already hated, automatically allows you free rein to do whatever you want with a performance.

Another smart thing, and she brought this up in her previous video, is doing a character that no one has any real life reference for like Trinity as Luci. I'd love to see more historical figures like the Mary Queen of Scots.

I actually liked the Alaska misquote. It was a mix of "if you're not wearing nails, you're not doing drag" and "this is my hair, I don't wear wigs" (both Alaska song lyrics), but maybe done wrong on purpose to show that Alaska is kinda a ditsy dingdong. Lolol

I don’t really agree that Alyssa wasn’t improvising. She definitely had pre-rehearsed bits, but whenever Ru probed, she responded perfectly in character and there’s no way she could have predicted how those conversations were going to head - the fact that it sounded rehearsed is testament to how clever her performance was. The top 2 were obvious, but Alyssa was a clear 3 for me.

I agree. She ha studied the character good enough to be versatile in her answers to Rus questions, she was quite clever with it. We definitely saw a lot of performances on SG whee queens learned the bits and 1) threw them in randomly and 2) they were not funny at all.

The thing I'd say about Jaremi Carey's Long Island Medium bit is that on Snatch Game, playing a medium and doing the "The fake psychic uses underhanded means to get the right answers" is a pretty standard way of punting on the entire challenge of Snatch Game; for every answer you just make it obvious you wrote the thing after the guest star already said it and go "the ghosts told me!" So it's just kinda like, "I want a C on this assignment" level of effort. The fact that she chose the long island medium, did the accent and bits about the huge hair, gets her into like C+, B- territory for me. Also in fairness I think Jaremi was one of the earlier people do to the bit, but as someone who watches a lot of Drag Race I get why people often feel disappointed. (Although that does not excuse the ridiculous hate campaigns that Jaremi has been subjected to at various times).

When it comes to Theresa Caputos intro: It would have been so much better and well played if she didnt say 'did you get a gift?' followed by 'i have a gift' If i have a gift was worded differently It could have landed for sure. Edit: When it comes to Alyssa I fully agree.... it was hilarious and fully in character.... however it was just quoting the movie and it seemed that Ru REALLY was setting her up for obvious responses.

In fairness, even good improv performers are gonna have a hard time trying to spontaneously come up with a funny answer of “what did you do to your dead dog’s body?” as Ariana Grande. Even if the rest of her performance were great, bringing up a dead animal is usually a Pandora’s box if someone tries to “Yes and” off of it.

As someone who used to watch many TLC shows semi-religiously (like... 15-20 years ago 😅), I can tell you that this Long Island Medium is actually VERY subdued compared to the real Theresa Caputo (or at least her on-screen/public persona). They were somewhat amusing but verging on boring to someone like me who had watched many seasons of LIM. And I think in Nancy Gray's case, Detox attempt at a sense of urgency and aggression made her rush too much? Which makes her delivery lose a lot of the dramatics that she could've leaned in.

I think Phi Phi influenced Roxxy to change her Snatch Game character last minute. I remember prior to the game they were talking and Phi Phi suggested that Roxxy's character of choice was not wise, something like that. Hence the last minute switch to Alaska. I think.

What actually happened is Alyssa, Roxxxy, and Jaremi were having a conversation and Jaremi was asked her opinion on their snatch game ideas. Based on what we saw, Roxxxy did need a thicker accent. Her suggestion for Alyssa was also spot on. The performance was Alyssa spouting mommie dearest quotes and lacked any real improv

Neither have anything much to do with performance or improv theory, although the first does give sound advice on what to do when your supporting DJ is drunk and the show is collapsing. But it's Katya riffing.

I see an exception about not needing to get the references: it is the case "I live in another country within another culture. For exemple, in Drag Race Brasil, the snatch game top3 was a consensus. However, foreigners were mad Miranda didn't win, while us were between Hellena and Dallas. Their impersonation was so on point and any Brazilian would get why it is funny. On the other hand, Miranda's jokes were the best, but her imprecise impersonation made us lose a bit of the fantasy

Alyssa's Joan Edwards was good because she just said random quotes from Mommie Dearest so it was just absurd and campy which makes it more entertaining. She was also trying so hard not to do her iconic tongue pop and that made it funnier. Also if you know anything about Mommie Dearest, it was never supposed to be a comedy but because it was so melodramatic it was funny. That's perfect for Alyssa because she's always unintentionally funny and dramatic.

I’ll say my only issue with your review that veers into being more of a fan than an impartial commentator is Alyssa’s stuff- I’m not sure her just shouting catchphrases that don’t make sense in-context is doing very much in terms of improvisation. As an impression of Joan, she’s great! She knows the mannerisms and how to deliver each quip. But as a member of the scene she’s not quite giving as much as even roxxxy who is attempting to play to each volley directly
