In today's video, we're talking about Impulse Responses, and what they are - both in terms of the technical side, and what you can do with them. You can use Impulse Responses (IRs) to create a reverb that sounds exactly like a particular space, or to emulate a guitar amp's cabinet section - but first, it's god to understand how it all works so you know what's involved.
In this tutorial series, this first part looks at the basics of what an IR is, and the concepts around that. The second part of the series will look at how to capture a guitar cab IR, start to finish.

I was always wondering what IR was and how it's made. That was before I stumpled upon what was one of the most informative videos I've seen in a while, a real eye opener! Thanks alot! Subscribed and thumb up :)!

Thank you. This helps more than you know. I’m an old school musician (80’s tech) that is using newer gear that takes advantage of IR and allows me to use the sound of expensive equipment without needing the financial support similar to the budget of a small town. Amplifier heads alone can cost nearly $5,000 (Soldano SLO-100) for instance. IRs let me use the Soldano SLO-100 without spending over 5k for a half-stack. I can even have 10 or 15 different expensive amps, some for free. I just need to decide which combos I want for what I’m playing. Awesomeness!

the narrative you provided of how we went from reverb impulses to guitar cab sweeps was informative & neat. telling a “story” with some amount of “plot progression” is a good way to capture an audience. i enjoyed this video. subscribed.

Part 2 comes next week with a full step-by-step tutorial on capturing a guitar cab. Patrons on Patreon can see it now! Also part 3 yet to be filmed, I’ll be talking about the limitations of IRs in some technical detail, along with solutions to get round some of those limits

I have always assumed that an IR was a combination of an amp head, a speaker, and the enclosure the speaker is mounted in. But what I'm gathering from this is that the speaker enclosure is not a factor. Is that accurate?

I have created a few cab IR's myself with great results. My question is while you are recording the sweep into the daw, can you put a console emulator such as a Waves REDD on the FX in on the recording track to add a bit of color? I do realize the sample should be clean as possible. It was just a thought.

You can do things like that for sure, but be aware that things like preamp distortion and saturation don’t translate well into something fixed like an IR, it just comes out as a very slight EQ change

How does IR apply for a home Studio set up like mine where I have something like FL Studio and basic mixer for recording?
@zendakk
@zendakk 4 жыл бұрын
You use an IR loader, most amp modeling plugins like BIASFX, TH-U etc have them built in as pseudo-cabinets where you choose an IR file. They work together with the amp+fx in your patch.

Why do all my IRs sound like poop though :( I can't figure out how to mix lead and rhythms...how do they do it with real amps and real mics? Do they typically put the mics in diff locations for lead and rhythm tones? Or use diff speaker cabinets, or diff mics?

Over-thinking it. With old School recordings they would hang a Royce ribbon Mic in front of the speakers, and mostly a Shure 57 usually directly at the edge of one speaker, maybe one placed down the hallway to the Loo.😊Not kidding, call it ambience. And just tune things up by ear, 'til it sounds right. All studios had a Nice Collection of Cabs and oddball Pawnshop amps from big to tiny. Whatever sounded right. Always an unfamiliar guitar laying about to amuse your experimental side. It's never science. Page used 'unsuitable' dinky amps and kept it his little secret for awhile, 'cause it worked. Don't forget to be dangerous and have fun, is rules #1 & 2.

@@brianmclaughlin4419 I guess I should have asked the question a little differently. Say you had a 100 watt amp head (any high gain amp) and a 4x12 cab. And you wanted to use this exact setup for both rhythm AND lead tones…what would be the difference between the two tones? I’m guessing for the lead sound you would turn the mids up, bass down, and change the mic positions? Maybe move the mics back a little?

I don’t have an eBay ad. Pro Mix Academy might have one. Also it’s not relevant to this video, and anyway if you have an issue with paid content you’re probably barking up the wrong tree
