@@TheNecromancer6666 it has its pros for sure but i bet most teams and engineers want a proper duel , if everyone is going to be on same level regardless what engine, aero etc u have then it takes out souls of race car. the variety of cars their engine etc is just for visual sake , the variety in performance is what matters most. now u have no advantage weight wise or aero wise if u go for smaller engine but at cost of low HP or torque and vice versa. in the end the cons outweigh pros imho.

Stunning to see a small high-revving engine in IMSA. I'm honestly still in shock they did it in the first place. My favorite little deal with this engine so far is the antilag mid-corner. The sound is so brutal and choppy, yet it's followed by that smooth, suspiciously Indycar wail.

If IndyCar ever gets their engine formula figured out and a 3rd engine manufacturer into the series I hope Honda/Acura can put this into the series as was originally intended. Having the data from running essentially the same engine for a year or more in IMSA would be amazing.

The turbo seems to be a bit on the small side. Which is good for response. It would also imply low boost levels and therefore an engine delivering a high non-boosted / atmospheric base power. Correct? And if so, is that the result of high compression ratio's enabled by direct injection and perhaps by turbulent jet ignition as seen on Honda's F1 and SuperGT engines?
@Phipsi333

dont forget that it's two turbos, so one turbo gets only powered by three cylinders
@Jarlefinken

It’s a twin turbo V6, so 1,2l feeding each turbo. I would also think they are using some of the technology from F1 and SuperGT, like pre-ignition and maybe variable intake runner length.

As far as HPD have stated, they've worked with HRC in Japan on applying F1 knowledge to how they work the hybrid system, the side effect of which is supposedly the car's unique sound. That said, who knows what else they learned from HRC.

These are BW EFR7163 units likely to have same specs as their IndyCar engine program... running fairly low boost pressures ( 15-18psi ). As for the exhaust side ( pre/post turbine), all pretty std racecar turbo workings... other than necessary control logic running the EWG. From the mileage'd out units I've held, they certainly don't appear to be ran hard at all, which would indicate, they run a very efficient N/A engine, to begin with. Lot of respect to HPD, Oreca, MSR, and WTR for putting these cars on the box, under such a short/challenging timeframe.. Incredible!

While I appreciate the approach, I believe the large turbocharged engine approach from BMW and Porsche is, as BSport mentioned, the best approach in a BoP formula, as it allows them "to cover all bases". In a pure series of engineering excellence, Honda's approach might turn out to be the best.
@Jt7166
@Jt7166 Жыл бұрын
Honda didn’t really have a “large” engine to use. This was being developed for Indycar and repurposed for GTP. I’ve watched those videos and he makes some great points, but given how light this engine is and the strategist use of ballast I would almost guarantee this 2.4L engine has a much lower COG than the others. And that matters too beyond just BoP. Not to mention Acura and Mazda has plenty of success in DPi with smaller output than Cadillac or Nissan previously
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo Жыл бұрын
"the large turbocharged engine approach from BMW and Porsche is the best approach in a BoP formula" I disagree, HPD are here to win. HPD will have chosen the best approach. Acura have certainly embarrassed BMW and Porsche so far. 😉 "Honda didn’t really have a “large” engine to use." They could have used the dry-sump 3.5 twin-turbo V6 from the NSX if that was better. It seems it would not be!

Really worried about the future viability of my beloved open wheel series when you look at what HPD and the other OEMs are doing engine wise in the International marijuana smugglers racing association. Hey IndyCar, wake the F up....no new manufacturers ....no new engines...old chassis...leads to no series. As NASA used to say "no bucks $$$, no BuckRogers". Great video
