I may be wrong, but from what I know the full story is that he cut off his hand after becoming a Remnant of Despair and replaced it with Junko's, as seen in a flashback during Danganronpa 2. Obviously he didn't want to keep it when he woke up from the simulation (having recovered from despair) so he got a robotic hand to take its place. I hope that helped :)
