Mostly a ripping yarn of seafaring and treasure hunting in a distinctly Jules Verne-like mode, Bernard L. Kowalski’s Krakatoa East of Java is notable as one of the few films to deal with arguably the most famous of volcanic eruptions, and stands as a progenitor for the disaster movie craze that would dominate the 1970s. It’s also a truly odd beast of a movie, a glossy, spectacular, unstable concoction, filmed for the massive canvas that was Cinerama and the last blockbuster film released in that format. Krakatoa, East of Java sways between genres and tones in a way that’s often as exasperating as it is enjoyable, but it’s also one where, if you can get past its more modish and silly touches, is more interesting than its reputation holds. The infamous 1883 explosion of the volcanic isle, a cataclysm heard as far away as Australia and which caused a tsunami that killed an estimated 30,000 people, inevitably provides the thunderous climax to the story. The opening scene sees some children, a mixture of ethnicities, being taught by nuns in a crude school at the village of Palembang, on the coast of Sumatra near Krakatoa, with the volcano’s awakening grimly suggested by rumblings that send shudders of portent through the idyllic little world. The plot proper begins with stalwart mariner and shipowner Captain Chris Hanson (Maximilian Schell) overseeing the loading of his ship, the Batavia Queen, with cargo and personnel for a salvage expedition, in the port of Anjer on Java.

Interesting story. Its a good movie. I have never seen it. The opium that Brian Keith was taking reminded me of some of the participants we have in the program I work in. Under the influence of drugs it is common to see some similar reactions. With the background of Krakatoa it brings back memories of when I graduated Mt. St. Helens erupted 5 days before.

Not a bad movie, except for the part where they sail away from the island through a narrow channel they never used to get to the island, during the eruption, getting people killed, all for dramatic effect and added 10-15 minutes to the movie. I skipped most of that part. I hate it when movies get dumb!

Opium-addicted diver; I'm not staying on this rust bucket ship - and will go ashore! Capt; You'll be under 100 feet of water and will die... The rust bucket ship survived a mega-tsunami and didn't lose anyone. The island was mostly destroyed and thousands died, including the old dope addict and his wife!

It held my interest up to the point where the helium balloon appeared. No burner means it is not hot air, and the silly thing has an engine but no sort of rudder to control direction. Nothing to stop it from spinning in circles. But then physics were not taught below college level back then, and a high school diploma was equal to the sixth grade too!

Listen at 9 minutes for how deep 18 fathoms are in feet. The captain said 48 feet. However 1 fathom is 6 feet, therefor 18 fathoms times 6 feet is 108 feet. Still, this is a good movie.
