I always find stories like this to be silly because if you cut off a large population in an area, there is no reason they wouldn't start their own economy separate from the rest. Jobs and resources are not finite. People make them by doing work.

The people in control would make sure the larger population would be resource and equipment poor. Similar to what's happening in our world. The only way the larger population would prosper is for them to first resist outside control. Only then they could have their own economy as you 've stated.

The problem with the premise of this story is that people stay employed indefinitely and losing your job doesn't happen which we all know doesn't happen. So you'd theorically have people coming in and out of the zone ALL the time which doesn't really make it as dramatically permanent as it seems.

The people on the outside of the wall appear surprisingly well cared for considering they're supposed to be on drugs and in constant dehydration. No sallow faces, no scab wounds from fentanyl or heroine needle holes all over. Heck some look even more buff and alert than the guards. Makes me wonder if all the budget went into the CGI for the city.

Society wouldn’t function without people that are stuck doing crappy jobs (stupid or not). Loads of really smart people never find success and some less than stellar individuals win big in life! I noticed this while I was still in college decades ago. I saw absolutely brilliant people flunk out. I saw less than average people graduate. It seemed to be more about persistence than anything else. Perhaps persistence is the key to success, being smart along with it doesn’t hurt. Of course there’s always people born into the right families and have the connections to get places and positions they really don’t merit. We all know them! 🤔

"Society wouldn’t function without people that are stuck doing crappy jobs (stupid or not)." Unfortunately that's not true. You see our nowadays world is growing more and more technical, while human body capabilities remain roughly the same (we do get a lot better education which offsets this somewhat). While the bell curve for iq will remain the same - since iq is a relative measurement against society, not against some set in stone final standard - our civilisation demands higher and higher iq for meaningful life as we make technological progress. It means that having 85 iq 100 years ago was perfectly fine - you'd be doing manual labour just like every body else; but having 85 iq nowadays pushes you towards the worst jobs, with least perspectives. Even army might not want you. In 100 years people with 85 iq might only live on "basic", with no place in a technological society except on social support. To put this into perspective - 16% of population have 85 iq or less. That's ~1 billion people. Combine that with a lot manual labour becoming automated - requiring skilled personel to operate and maintain machines - and you'll find we have a quickly growing problem, that nobody really wants to tackle - since it would basically require throwing away most of how our societies operate.

If there was, there would be a revolt so quickly. If you divided 80% of your population from 20%, who the hell is manning the military force, who is gonna stop invasions, another problem is many people may attempt revolt, and with numbers and the lack of military force, they could easily overwhelm and gain their own independence.

That "secret tunnel" between the Zone and the Town sure is a big flaw in the security system. People seem to be going back and forth between the two areas as if the Wall kinda didn't exist. That said, what is most realistic about the scenario is the fact that, just like in real-life medieval developing-world hell-holes, people might be starving, dressed in rags and have zero access to medical care, but mysteriously, they have an endless supply of military-grade weapons and illegal hard drugs. It's a real thing: just go anywhere in Africa, and you'll see it.

The separation would not last long as nature engages in what is called "regression toward the mean,(average IQ with some above it)" meaning individuals with higher and even high IQ would evolve quickly over generations on the stupid side of the barrier and figure out a way to destroy it and those on the other side, the intelligent side. Likewise, the intelligent side would regress toward the mean and become less intelligent generation after generation.

I feel like most, if not all of these "recap" channels (movies, tv shows, anime, etc) are run by one multi network channel or whatever they're called. ALL the titles are the same: every word is capitalized and it's almost like reading broken English most of the time. Super weird. I do like this channel in particular though, the normal human voice instead of some fake text-to-speech AI, plus the jokes are a breath of fresh air for this bland recap trend. Good stuff, dude!

Well, ask yourself why America's inner cities and swaths of rural poverty haven't banded together and lifted themselves up and out of their punishing, desperate circumstances? The truth is, once mired in extreme poverty it is ultimately extremely difficult to change behaviors since this is not understood.

The "punishing, desperate circumstances" are better than what 80% of the rest of the world experiences. Did "inner cities" consider career options other than smoking and selling pot (or worse)?

yes and no you its not just its hard to chance behaviors once your at the bottom people view change and its almost impossible to get out of poverty whitout the help of someone else ounce your on the street who will give you a job ? you smell, you look overall week and malnourished and unkept so you cant find a job but you dont have money to make yourself look better to get said job your stuck in a loop and only need the sympathy of someone else and people are prideful per nature so a lot wont want to leave there ego to ask for sympathy but when you remove the need to beg and just create place where these people can come and not be judged for what they are most will find an exit to this nightmare but i guess its easier to blame them and drug for there problem and not the society we live in that is build on people blood

It's bad, but it's organized to be that way bad. I lived in the capital of Brazil, aptly named Brasilia, and it was built from the ground up with the specific purpose of being the capital of the country. It was designed so that the rich people who work for the government live in the center and they moved all the poor people and migrants to the outskirts creating what they call a "sanitary circle". Renting in the inner circle begins at 4x to 20x the average income of the city. In the outskirts, two people can pay for a house's rent on average wage. When it's on purpose, it is a whole other level to deal. It's not like in the US where you can just walk down a road and suddenly, you're in a bad neighborhood, you have to go outside town to find the bad neighborhoods. You have no idea when the "apparatus of the state" has its mission to maintain the status quo. Where the rich are given lavish titles and long names. Titles that don't even make sense to be in the same phrase. Idi Amin Dada would've felt right at home.
