I think we're all lucky to be living at a time when the importance of personal financial planning is finally getting the presence it deserves. I know my parents made a few but costly financial mistakes in their 20s while raising my siblings and I simply because people back then didn't have access to the abundance of quality information we have at our fingertips today. It's exciting to see the younger generation speak about generational wealth and planning and I will always reiterate how much of a let down it is that our antiquated education system isn't doing more to teach these skills and knowledge early on in the classrooms.

My husband and i have a joint account that we pay for household bills and groceries where we will put in money once a year to increase the amount inside. for food, we take turns weekly to handle food be it cook or get food delivery. so technically we only spend on each other for bdays and anniversary. and we started the joint account exactly like how daniel described. we started the account the moment we applied for a bto and put in $500 each every month. we have moved into our BTO for 4 years and the money has not run out because of the savings prior

Rather than contributing 50/50, my fiance and I have decided to contribute per salary percentages instead. (Eg. Each will contribute 50% of salary earned). I think it works great and is more fair this way.

Isn’t that unfair since the one earning more is being punished for their competence? :/
@stephaniemuse
@stephaniemuse Жыл бұрын
@@gaiaang8112 If you're in a relationship, there shouldn't be a "me against you" mentality. It is "us as a team". Either of you might be doing better than the other right now... but people lose their jobs, get retrenched, burn out and decide to switch industries, etc. As long as you work as a team and think of the best interest of the family as a unit (two individuals can also be considered a family) then all will be well. When either party starts to think of their own interest only, then that's when problems arise.

Personal view, I find that setting up a joint account for couple going into the common goal of getting married is very healthy way for money management. The joint account is mainly for household expenses like utilities, payments, replenish of household items and some even furniture. But I am shocked to hear the discussion about the differences of "what if one love steaks and another love maggie". The point here is simple, If a married couple who vow to go through things together and has to be so calculative over groceries, what is the point of even getting married and staying together? Do you calculate who stay home more and uses more electricity and pays the bigger share? Or do you split the bill at restaurant (after married) just because one ordered A5 beef and another order a salad? This is so disheartening to hear. This is not love but just a companion.

@ Daniel you don't need to go physically to the bank to open a joint account, at least for POSB. You can sign up for a joint account, complete your side, and put in your partner's details and they'll get an email to complete the application. In the blink of an eye, you get your joint account yays. Can do everything on phone.

This is a good topic and many can relate to it. Having to know how much is the limit for spending makes a difference so as to ensure that there is still enough to put into savings for contingencies, or for the future when both partners have ceased to earn employment income.

I think baseline is a good relation need to be able to talk openly about finances. If you don't have that, it's a major red flag. I also feel that what is often not considered or discussed with an open mind is "what happen if". Be it an accident, health problem, divorce etc. Very easy for one party to refuse to discuss it because it's "pantang" or they just in denial.

Why is it have to be so difficult? Just set household budget. U can set ratio by income if u want to be fair. 1. Know basic expenses, 2. Divide by categories like this person pay for transport and pay for food and etc. 3. For treats, then based on own will. 4. For goals like travel, set joint savings.

Its kinda harmful & stereotypical to have blanket statements about how much having a Singaporean girlfriend will 'cost'. There are many ladies who do not expect the guy to pay for everything and/or have very modest & reasonable spending habits. And if you are complaining that girls are only impressed/appeased by money thus having a girlf is expensive, then you need to reconsider the type of people you seem to like to chase instead of relying on blanket statements like 'all girls like that one la'. Its setting up yourself and your relationship for unsustainable, unrealistic expectations. Find a partner with similar spending habits and values and does not use money as a weapon to test your 'love', then talking about money will become a positive experience to help each other achieve your goals together.
