I enjoyed this movie quite a bit, but it definitely has some issues. I applaud it more as a bold experiment than the final product. Seeing it in a movie theatre probably helped, due to how a cinema screen transports you there with Jonny. I also wonder how much difference a repeat viewing will make, as there are some slow parts where my attention was held with the anticipation of what might happen. Losing that anticipation in a repeat viewing might make the film a little boring. Also, the older lady at the end was Lauren Marie Taylor from Friday the 13th Part 2.

@ahaubert80 I thought she had the best acting in the film...I cannot for the life of me figure out (other than as a gimmick) why they'd crop this movie...in the theater it would have been even more immersive in the "nature" concept if you could see more and the screen was filled

@@AVAPopCulture Well, my natural field of view is more square shaped than rectangular. I don’t know if that’s how everyone’s eyes work or just mine. So the framing gimmick worked for me in helping to focus what I was looking at. I’m not a professional cinematographer, so it didn’t bother me the way I could see it bothering a director.

I agree with you, the yoga lady gave up way too easily. The Sheriff’s kill was my favorite with the buzzsaw. I know that there wouldn’t be a movie if the old man earlier on had turned left to get to the road, but his son told him not to go into the woods because of the bear traps and he did it anyway.

Always love the honest thoughts! I like your point about the fact that this film has everyone talking and it has you wanting to come back to dissect it. To me, this means that it's done something right. I personally LOVED it! F13 is my favorite horror franchise - and slashers are my favorite sub-genre of horror - so I'm an easy mark. I saw it twice in theater and heard so many different reactions. It satisfied both the slasher fan in me and my strong appetite for anything new/different in film.

@filmpositive6601 thanks my friend...see, as a slasher fan, I see it taking away everything a slasher is supposed to do which is build tension and suspense...then to hear him say he did that on purpose to piss off horror fans kinda dampened it more for me...still want to own it though!

Great review, Chase! I was super curious to see a film makers thoughts on this one. I felt the yoga kill was the best part of the movie but hell of a point lol. It was just a hill! I get what he was trying to do with this one but it didn’t land for me. Outside the kills I just found it boring.

I thought it was okay. I mean it was something different. I see what you mean about the pacing but yeah it can't be scary when you see everywhere he's going to be. I would definitely wouldn't buy it but I would like to watch it again. I don't know how they're going to make a sequel, but that should be interesting. That one death made me gag I don't want to spoil it for anybody but I'm sure you know which one I mean.

It’s $3.99 to stream so I’ll probably watch it. My wife and I are HUGE fans of all things horror. Esp love late 70’s to mid 80’s flicks…the classic era imo. Love your channel. Glad I found it. We constantly stream horror movies so looking forward to your recs of current horror flicks.

Agree with you on the yoga kill. Also if you were getting killed like that brutal with something stuck through your body you wouldn't be able to turn around and look who was killing you. I thought the movie was ok and creative but kinda boring. I think it could have been way better.

I’m actually more interested in seeing this now, lol. The images you showed did evoke 80’s nostalgia. I might stream it first. By the way, has KZbin rolled out the “Hype” function yet? The button is supposed to be below the “like” button, but I haven’t seen it in iOS, tvOS or MacOS. It seems like a great way to boost content. As always. Great review! I really like the analysis from a filmmaker’s perspective. Hearing the techniques used and how you might have shot it differently and how that would change the film is something I’ve not seen anywhere else.

I noticed a lot of my reviews don't do as well as other videos so maybe people don't appreciate the different perspective but that is how I am going to stick to doing them lol...just be honest in my thoughts and opinions and bring in my experience...they'll have to watch other channels for standard fan reviews lol 😆 I haven't even heard about the "hype" function yet! Well, I enjoy most of your vids, so do what you like and what gets liked/watched. The “hype” function was announced Monday. The articles made it sound like it was live. My understanding is that all followers get 3 Hypes” a week. It is designed to help content providers understand a certain number of subscribers to get hypes which will increase their visibility. I think it is outside of the regular algorithm.

I think, in regards to the videos, some people just prefer the "I like this it is so awesome or I hate this it just sucks" types of reviews...maybe it is the old history guy and writer in me BUT I am much more about explaining WHY and citing my sources to back up my point of view/opinion than just fanboying or hating on a movie in a review lol

I really liked In a Violent Nature, some great kills in there and it’s definitely a slower pace but I dig a super slow burn. Kinda reminded me of the pacing of Raccoon Valley which is another low budget film that I love. Ever seen that one? It’s only streaming on Prime but I thought it was really good

Hey Chase, just finished watching this movie on Shudder. I did like it but was left scratching my head for all the same reasons as you. The ending... I was waiting and waiting... for something; anything. A lot of the film had a great vibe that I really liked, and I did preorder it. We'll see if time is kind to it.

I really appreciate this review, as all I’ve heard are positive takeaways. Which is fine, but this movie didn’t work for me either. Credit where credit is due, as there were factors I appreciated also… but overall there were too many cheap or annoying aspects that repeatedly took me out of the movie.

I appreciate you for trying to find something/anything to like about this movie but ... To me, this idea was a fail. I wouldn't pay $2 for this at Dollar Gen.. I made it to the reservoir kill and thought the EXACT thing you said. Even if they jump scared us with sudden perspective changes before kills.. but the way they did this put me to sleep.

Really enjoying the critical Chase takes! So, is it really cropped to 4:3 aspect ratio? That cannot be a good thing. I didn't know this one was getting a 4K, but it figures since I preordered the blu-ray.

@stickywicked447 the word is there is a 4k coming....it was certainly shot in 4k with a canon c70 ....they did crop it to standard and the only reason I can think of is to make it look like an older movie....
