I can't tell you how much this song meant to me, as a kid. My parents were hippyish and it made me feel like Sesame street understood me, and thought I was okay.

Even though this song is a parody of "The 'In' Crowd," which was sung by Cass Elliot with the Mamas and the Papas, I get a Talking Heads vibe from this song. Especially when the "Out Crowd" starts to sing. When I listened to my brother's copy of Speaking in Tongues, some of the beginning songs made me think of this. On another note, the way the Out Crowd spoke enthusiastically about doing heavy chores, being active, and having a grand picnic outside was what my parental units wanted me to be like. To think that the Out Crowd section of the cartoon was also a bit satirical: especially when the hill valley donkey/alligator blond was taking her money out of her wallet and throwing it and the wallet out. Your Sesame Cartoons are brilliant, Sally. (You may be interested to know that your cartoon style was listed as one of the inspirations for Superjail! on adult swim.)

Hehe, this was great. Great animation and great jazzy music. I grew up to be a jazz fan and remember watching this when I was little. laughingsal, if you're the animator, great job. I'm definitely part of the in crowd. Out crowd's too loud. And check out the blonde girl tossing green bills out of her purse when the song says "can't pay us to stay indoors".. is she tossing money away? Crazy out crowd indeed...

One of my favorite songs from Sesame Street as a child. I was like a kid version of Freud though because I read so much into it. To me, the In-Crowd represented everything I wanted to be apart of. Accepted, loved, cool, fashionable. Plus, they had this groovy 60's look to 'em! In a way, It reflected my desire to be part of the "in" crowd as a child. I was always a bit of an outsider.

This one was a bit more darker and moodier compared to the other zany, colorful shorts in the Sesame Street roster at the time I watched the show (1995-1998; I watched it sporadically.) The dark and moody tone is subtler than that one "AT" cartoon, though.

You're right. There was a wonderful producer named Arlene Sherman who deserves the credit for bringing in independent animation and letting artists do wild things. Probably led to big enrollment in animation classes 18 years later!
