This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. From the tragedy of the April 2013 bombing came Boston's response "Boston Strong". Why did that "Strong" happen? Because in Boston, everyone owns the marathon. We saw it in acts great and small, that day, and in the days that followed. And what does it mean to all of us now, all of us who "own" this event? It means that we have a responsibility to carry on that strength, and to pass on both the ownership and the strength that comes with it, for it defines who we are.
After a decades-long career as a business lawyer, Tom Grilk took over as Executive Director of the Boston Athletic Association in 2011. He had been the marathon's finish line announcer since 1979, a member of the BAA Board of Governors for many years, and President for seven years prior to 2011. Tom feels privileged to assist in the expansion of the BAA's role to not only produce great events, but also engage in a strong community service program and a renewed high performance athlete development program. As a runner, his best marathon time was 2:49:03.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
