In ancient China, traditional fans were works of art; people wrote poems, painted, and carved on them to show off their taste. But as martial arts novels became popular, fans turned into weapons. The people who use them are usually young kung fu masters-the main heroes with positive, heroic images. They're suave and handsome, effortlessly defeating enemies with their fans in super elegant fight scenes. As a child, I found these scenes magical and would grab fans at home to imitate them, dreaming of learning the kung fu to defeat enemies with a fan. But in recent years, you hardly see any really awesome fan performances anymore; actors with those skills seem to be getting fewer and fewer. I hope we'll get to see fans as weapons again someday-that mix of elegance and strength is just so captivating.
