As a mom and former 20 yr teacher, the conversations I've had to have with 14yo daughter over the last 2 days have been heartbreaking but informative for her. We've talked about everything from policing, to how cotton funded the factors of the North, to the water crisis in California & Mississippi, to the banning of books. 💔 She's been in AWE, and sadden, by all that she never gets at school. Thank God for the ancestors, my parents, HS teachers, HBCU 💜💛💜, and spaces like this. I can help her, and in turn, she is more grounded as she moves through this world, best we can be, in this settler experiment. Stay well Knubians. Thanks for this space Dr. Carr and Prof. Hunter. ♥️

The worse thing about this as I watched was this Tyre obviously was not that type of cat. He was not high, belligerent, resisting NONE of that. They still snatched him up with no explanation. Tased, pepper sprayed and beat him at the same time. Even when he did run it was because at this point in the assault it was obvious to that young man they were out for blood and this was life or death.
@staceydonald1025 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! He wasn't the stereotypical pants sagging, profanity using, broken English speaking, ghetto acting, wanna be a thug type of dude. He was intelligent, extremely articulate, free-spirited type of skateboarding kind of geeky dude. A guy who was on his way back from taking pictures of the sky because that was his hobby.
@dwainstanley1670 Жыл бұрын
@@staceydonald1025 Thus because there was no #Boogeyman that could be used to justify excessive force, the Police Chief fired errbody and is hoping that enough of the jury pool is tainted and the #LongGame litigation approach will work.

Most of us know by now that behaving "the right way" doesn't sway quite a few of these cops. We've seen too many situations with brutality against our communities play out to know this.

@@staceydonald1025 Even If a person acted like a stereotype, he/she deserved to live and deserve humane treatment.. Some may even see both you and I as not behaving up to their standards and not deserving humane treatment. What you said in your comment is exactly the white nationalist justification for this terrorism. It's used as an excuse for some with badges to murder. Regardless of if someone acts "ghetto" or not, that does not justify the vile terrorism the cops committed.

On to my second statement, I disagree with Professor Hunter that race didn't play a role in this just because the officers were the same race, if Tyre Nichols were white we would not be having this conversation because they wouldn't have done that to a white person. They know exactly who they can and can't do that to, and it is race based.

Thank you, Prof. Hunter and Dr. Carr, for letting us have this space to have this conversation during this most difficult time!! Our hearts are saddened for what has happened to Tyre Nichols and the rude reminder that this has happened to so many before him - those whose lives were similarly cut short!! When will it ever end? I guess we can take refuge in the lyrics of Donny Hathaway's "Some Day We All Will be Free"!! Without the hope of our ancestors, we could easily be overcome by the constant, recurring anguish of our mothers crying for their sons/husband/brothers/friends!! I feel like we've lost 6 of our Black men!! And the way Tyre was taken from us, by ours, makes it even more painful! I pray Tyre Nichols' parents will find peace in celebrating his beautiful life and the special human he showed himself to be!! This madness of us losing our Black brothers needs to stop!! We need the DOJ to seriously come up with ways to address and fix what's happening in our Police Departments nationwide!! Meanwhile, thank you both for putting this so eloquently in perspective!! 🙏🏿🖤💯
