It's interesting because I had reason to go through my mother's belongings and I am convinced that this woman could have established an "A" class restaurant. She did what she had to do to take care of us, but she was much more than a maid. The longer I live, I get to appreciate my mama more and those of her generation.

It seems the African diaspora had a similar upbringing, with grandmothers being at the centre of the family. Speaking of Saturdays, we all participated in house cleaning, wether you are in Brazil, central America and the Southern U.S or the Caribbean, Saturday chores was part of our upbringing! As Dr Black would say "ahay" with the shake of the head!

I listen to episode249 with deep intensity, my mind did not weaved, as it sometimes do; this monologue of South Africa Apartheid era had me deeply emersed in Dr Carr's recounts of that horrified system! Don't mentioned of the silent exclusion of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe. Mind you I have gotten some great nuggets from In Class With Dr. Carr but this one reminds me of my awareness of the South Africa system in 1976.

"Hannibal Afrik" is one of the very important figures in my development. In the late 70s early 80s, when the Federal funding for CETA summer jobs in Chicago was still a thing I "worked" for a program operated by Afrik and basically our "job" was to learn about us! He used the CETA funding as incentive for us to learn about black culture etc. During a naming ceremony he whispered an African name in my ear 3 times and I was instructed to repeat it. Unfortunately I have since forgotten the name but as an adult in 1990 I changed my name legally to reflect my connection to the continent. Later, Hakim Madhubuti had major influence on my life!

I love this program. It came about in a real time of struggle. The fulfillment it has given, through fractionary, has been endless fuel to help us [me] along the freedom fight. I see now, even clearer than before, that the goal is always within reach. Grateful that The power of knowledge can shift us out of the jade colors of social structure into the tricolors of freedom. ***RBG ------------- S/O DOC. "We workin"

With all due respect, my scholars, the first incarnation of 'Grits Ain't Groceries' was recorded in 1955 by Little Willie John and was titled 'All Around The World.' Little Milton's version, 'Grits Ain't Groceries,' came out in 1969. He changed the title but kept the lyrics. May they both RIP!

Yes, yes Karen on Saturdays cleanup ! Laundry, sweep, mop and dust everything. I turned up the Motown sounds and time would pass away. From 8am til 2 or 4 pm, I was getting it. Once done, I loved the sparkle and shine fresh smells and neatness! Discipline. I give thanks my Mom taught me household cleanliness as well a personal hygiene standards. I enjoy a clean house and started doing so at 9 or 10 yo., the entire house! I don't like an Unclean house to this day (I'm not being funny nor better than) it gives me the yikes.

@knarrative that’s a class all in itself “black leaders married to non-black spouses” cuz we need to sit with that for a moment. HARRY H. PACE, a black leader for the future of our culture literally changed races between 1920 and 1940 census records. His legacy was lost/stolen from us in the wake of his lack luster funeral where only his wife and the “burial plotter” were the only folks in attendance at his funeral. I have a letter from him expressing his condolences to my families loss of the great John Merrick of Durham, NC circa. 1914. Let’s talk about this thang!

I do believe that we should choose a mate from our race but as our beloved hosts pointed out, we all have contradictions. We love our celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz, and the like. But, the majority of us don't like how they get here! I understand why we don't like the union due to the history between our group and theirs. I understand that those relationships can be built on foundations of feeling inadequate and wanting to assimilate. I understand that those relationships can be built on fetishism. Yet we cannot judge harshly those that do engage in nonmelenated relationships or relationships that are with melenated peoples of other races. We need to judge them individually and realize no matter our bias, we're human first. Axé.
