Last week, millions of viewers watched in stunned amazement as Chad Smith was robbed of the Golden Cowbell after his drum-off with Will Ferrell on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. Prior to that, he faced an even more formidable opponent in the drumming world: Ginger Baker.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ginger in 2014 in Santa Monica at a restaurant on the 3rd street promenade. He was eating French fries and sitting by himself. I walked up to him, asked if he was "the" Ginger Baker...he politely said yes...I told him he was a great influence on my playing and I honored to meet him ....He shook my hand and said "Thank you". He was very quiet and shy. Not what you would expect.

The man was a talented drummer. But how he got as far as he did with his attitude, young or old, is nothing short of miracle. He wouldn't even land a local amatuer gig nowdays if he was starting young without experience. No band or musicans would ever put up with him, because there's at least 10 other open drummers in any area who can fit the music without the attitude.

I was at the event that Chad talks about. It was called "Drums in the Bush". It was organised by Rhythm magazine, I think it was in 1996. I still have a drumstick I got signed by Bernard Purdie, Chad and Ginger. Quite a few of us waited a long time to get some things signed by Ginger, one of the organisers came out and told us to hold on, they were trying to get him to come out and sign things for those that had hung around. Eventually he came back out. He was on the stage still while I was standing on the floor, the stage was up to my neck (I'm nearly 6 foot tall). He crouched down to speak to folk. He was clearly drunk or high as f**k and could hardly speak. I gave him the drumstick to sign, he mumbled to me, "Do you know how hard it it to sign a drumstick?" I looked up at him and replied, "Ginger, I'm not as famous as you, nobody's ever asked me to sign a drumstick." He paused and actually looked at me properly and then smiled slightly. I think that was the only time he smiled throughout the whole event. I still have the drumstick!

Had the pleasure to meet Chad outside a Hotel here in Manhattan a few years ago - a SUPER nice guy who engaged me in conversation for a few minutes - and the FIRST and really only topic I brought up (aside from RHCP) was how much I admired him for how he conducted this interview and wanted to thank him for staying on and getting out of Ginger what he could - as a drummer and and as a kindred soul. He was really grateful and appreciative. I'll never forget those few minutes.

Those awkward silences that Chad has are priceless. But, he is patient with Ginger and never loses his good humor. Nor does Chad lose his admiration for the miserable old bastard. He asks good questions and keeps Ginger engaged. I think Ginger enjoyed being difficult and surly. As for this video, i think he's in his own world of physical pain and mental bitterness. He actually becomes more engaged as the interview goes on. Then, you realize...he is actually still sharp. Bravo to Chad for making Ginger smile and tell interesting, funny stories.

Feel kind of sorry for that Chad when he tried to light his cigarette. If you have a lighter like that why have the flame on high? I didnt know who he was until I looked it up, he"s drummer for the Chili Peppers. No wonder he's in awe of Ginger, who plays on two of my all-time favorite records: Blind Faith and P.i.L. Album, supporting two of England's greatest ever, Steve Winwood and John Lydon.

I was lucky enough to meet Mr Baker. It was at a free concert in Atlanta.Cream had set up on top of this hill where I was living.I popped out of the bushes surprising him. He asked Where in the Hell did you come from? Ginger I live here. Then he told me to open one of his drum bags where there was a bag of pot.So we began partying. He had all these stashes in his drum cases. We got into this deep conversations while he was jamming.Amazing! After the concert we carried on. I went back to the Hilton and talked and did every kind of drug imaginable and drank a couple of fifths of whiskey.Ginger just seemed to be happy to have somebody to talk to.He was super intelligent and no bullshit.
