Bill Ward of Black Sabbath spoke very highly of John. Bill called John a true musician and referred to himself as more of a 'reactionary drummer'. I think Bill felt that John was better than him but it never stopped Ward from achieving greatness. In much the same way that Bill was Black Sabbath, John was Led Zeppelin and their music must be taken in that context.🎼🥁🎹

Anyone who thinks John Bonham is even in the same league as Ginger Baker doesn't know what they are talking about. I've been playing the drums for 32 years and I was classically trained which I later found to be a hindrance as a classically trained musician is programmed against improvisation and improvisation is something that Ginger and Bonham had in bucket loads. Both were masters of the rudements that all drummers know but not many can totally master and understand. But Ginger wasn't just a skillful drummer; Ginger understood 'Time' and I mean he properly understood it. Listen to the time signatures of many cream records, then think about how they would have sounded if they were played in standard 4:4 time which is how Jack Bruce wrote them, it was Gingers knowledge of time which resulted in the huge heavy sound that cream was famous for. Ginger was a Jazz musician who understands musical arrangements and Bonham was just an amazing drummer. Bakers knowledge of time is what sets them apart.

I'm sorry to annoy some of you but Baker was right, although he was very undiplomatic about it, as usual. Both had their place, and neither could be in each other's bands. But, Baker's drum solo magnum opus Toad on Wheels of Fire, and anytime he probably did it on tour, is a much much much more interesting drum solo than Bonham's in Moby Dick. The whole solo is one big swing, which Moby Dick is absolutely not. I love them both, and I love them both because Baker was an absolute bollox and didn't pretend otherwise, and Bonham was a lovely dude. Take the emotion out of it, they were both of genius level, but swinging as a drummer was an art which Baker had in much more quantity than Bonham. Interestingly, Baker stated that Charlie Watts would swing, and he was as far away from Baker as a drummer as you could get.
