In conversation: David Holmgren and Helena Norberg-Hodge

David Holmgren (co-originator of the Permaculture concept) and Helena
Norberg-Hodge (Director, Local Futures) share a deep ecological sensitivity, as well as a big-picture view of the environmental movement, coming from many decades of experience. In the comfort of Helena’s home, the two discuss the cross-pollination between permaculture and other localization
initiatives, the future of energy and social and economic organization,
and more. They also present a historical analysis of the currents and
counter-currents of environmentalism, which any activist would do well
to consider.

This was one of the clearest discussions about the global economy and current situation in 2024 that I have listened to. I am very grateful for both of your contributions to doing this video and getting it on U-tube. Your experiences have taught you and now have been an influence on my thinking. I too had been thinking that the leaders needed to be notified by the people who see as clearly as the two of you do. However I was recently doubting the efficacy of and had been concluding that the adverse effects were to be expected. Therefore even the U-tube is mega machine ideology, yet we use it and join. I have been calling it "The Great Awakening". Now I see more hope, more possibilities due to this video. Thanks especially for the idea of localizing. And the one beautiful idea that I gleaned and shall implement was how the phrase "self sufficient homesteading", is actually a lie supported by the corporate and capitalist culture. As a gardener who has been learning from Dr. Elaine Ingham, Dr. Zach Bush, Dr. D Johnson and his wife, Matt Powers, Dr. White and John of AEA(Advanced Eco Agricultural) the fact of humanity is community. The "We", is the denial of the self sufficiency idea. Yes, great moves!

Fabulous talk shared here, thank you! One particular takeaway I like in the energy conversation on fotovoltaic panels or biomass: "Fire is a part of management of the land (so necessary these days in light of all the wildfires around the globe) and our ancestors had a correct relationship with fire" - "Connection to our Culture and not replicable on a large, global scale; it is needing to be seen through the lens of Localization!"

About woodsmoke - why not have the best of both worlds? We have just installed a double-burning wood-fired heater. Double combustion and similar "rocket" technology is much more efficient than traditional and virtually no harmful emissions...
