While I agree with Perry that streaming sites should finally let audiences create their own playlists, it may not lead to the desired effect he’s looking for. Influencers and large media organizations can also create their playlists and distributors will be able to buy their way into these lists, just like what is happening on Spotify or even the radio before then. As a result, the status quo between mainstream cinema and everything else will more or less remain the same. But maybe, just maybe, if Perry and likeminded cinephiles get lucky, more viable niches will emerge from streaming platforms letting users create and share lists easily and different types of film and media will have the incentive to get made.
