Writer, actor and stand-up comedian Jo Brand visited the BFI Southbank to talk about her career as part of the BFI's Comedy Genius season.
Drawing from her background as a nurse, Jo Brand made painfully honest observational comedies such as Damned and Getting On, set, respectively, in the worlds of social services and the geriatric ward. Emerging from the furnace of alternative stand-up, her laconic and biting comedy blew apart preconceptions of what female comedians could be, and she has always proudly remained her own uncompromising self.

Jo is such an authentic and lovely woman. People who bully, heckle and judge her define themselves, not Jo. And if they’re offended - fuck em! Jo for Prime Minister!

Love Jo Brand. Re electro shock, old days, the US. It was in wide use in places like North Dakota, on non verbal people with disabilities, into at least the 1990s. I truly appreciate Brand's voice in destigmatizing people with experience in these institutions.

To all the people who don't find her funny....why are you searching for her name on you tube? For all those offended by her or her comments.....she's a comedian making a joke....that's what comedians do....if you dont like the jokes I refer you.to my previous sentence.

From the sounds of it the joke Jo recently made about battery acid was completely inappropriate and I am in no way condoning it but I think the point needs to be made that if a comic makes an inappropriate joke every now and then doesn't mean they're a bad person... This is just my opinion, I've seen lots of reports about this joke but don't know the content so if someone could explain the joke I would appreciate it just so that I could understand why it's caused such an uproar... Thanks

parents that can send their child to public school buys careers -- they can go straight to the top..or very near the top... (look at jack whiteall today). The person hosting this does not do a great job, poor Jo livens it up as only she can and puts up with him.. The host is full of himself.

I always thought comedy was suppose to be cruel. I remember seeing Joan Rivers and the response to her first joke of the evening was laughter and boos. Like Jo Brand's sitcoms.

I hated the way she treated Carol Thatcher after she made a ‘derogatory’ remark whereby she insisted she should be sacked by the BBC and she was. There is quite a nasty side of her.

Comedy genius. About as funny as bollock cancer. Her career has been kept afloat by public subsidy - BBC and old Channel Snore. Without them, she'd have crashed. Please, can we get rid of BBC - it will only create more 'comedy geniuses' like this.
