God, just as a response to the beginning to the video, growing up with the late 00s-early 2010s internet and being that impressionable kid seeing all the nintendo youtubers of that time hype up this game and shit on nuts and bolts (this applies also to stuff like hyping up ocarina of time and dissing wind waker), it's insane to see someone talk of that from a historical perspective and realize that you're about to graduate with your masters instead of still living that time.

Very glad to see someone taking the side of this game. I'm so tired of people who think parroting Jonathan Tronathan is the peak of comedy/media criticism. I am a huge Banjo-Kazooie geek to the point I want a tattoo of them someday, played the first game when I was like 4... and I still liked Nuts and Bolts!! Wow! The only criticism I really have is that I don't really enjoy the fact it's so split up in missions, and the giant worlds, while very cool, do not really encourage exploration. Otherwise, I adore the game, it's super fun and SUPER PRETTY. The character designs are hit and miss, sure, but the environments.... Showdown Town really speaks to me. The music only enhances it, I was listening to it before I even had a chance to get the game. But yeah, I honestly have more fun with Nuts than I had with Tooie upon a replay for 100 percent for both games. Mostly considering I played it with my then-boyfriend, and we had a lot of fun making the weirdest vehicles with the dumbest names and laughing at the character dialogues. Especially the oddly frisky Jinjos were a great source of laughter. It's gotten so hard to just TALK about these games and be happy that they exist because people either get angry about Nuts and Bolts or whinge that they want a new game. Please, folks. Play another game. I promise there's a lot of great stuff you never knew existed. Very good video!

Rare was apparently going to make a Banjo-Kazooie remake at first, with new, co-operative game mechanics, but decided against it because they could already hear fans calling it a rehash. I think I prefer Nuts & Bolts over what that would have been, tbh In the end they were being too self-critical and held themselves to too high a standard, only wanting to try for a new game once they had figured out something that would have been impossible on N64's hardware, but on the path to create something new, they left behind the old. With their mindset at the time and their lack of faith in the platformer genre, there's no way they would have been able to make a remake, let alone a worthy successor. Nuts & Bolts ended up alright in the end, at least. Despite all it lost, it still kept the spirit of Banjo-Kazooie.

Ive been thinking about Nuts and Bolts a lot in the wake of Tears of the Kingdom. After playing through that game I just couldn't shake the feeling that NnB somehow did the vehicle building way better, despite having a vastly more restricted system in more restricted levels on more restricted hardware. I realized that Rare made all the right calls with their vehicle system to complement the game around it. Its not the most robust or mechanically interesting system ever, but there's infinitely more payoff to designing the right vehicle to pop Mr. Patch, deliver twenty coconuts or wreck Grunty than there is to auto building yet another hoverbike and gluing yet another Korok to it.

Hey ended up finding this video on my monthly "Look up Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts videos" binge and found this video and as a Nuts and Bolt megafan(thats not a joke btw this is my favourite game of all time) id love to give my 2 cents. One thing I wanna say is that Rare was literally always gonna go down this path, there were no plans for Banjo Threeie at all and that line at the end of Tooie was just a throwaway joke line, sure there is a chance that maybe they would've made another if they were bought by Nintendo but it would've probably still been pretty similar to how Nuts and Bolts is now, although thats only speculation. Nuts and Bolts technically starts all the way back on the original Xbox as there was going to be a Banjo kart racer (not Pilot) but that was scrapped, then It was Banjo X, and then they brought back the cars (thats the short version of events but still). The self deprecating humor was mostly the devs knowing that this game was not like Kazooie or Tooie at all, but like I said earlier, at the time they didn't wanna make Threeie, which unintentionally combined with everything else was the nail in the coffin to a big chunk of people. I really recommend looking at the "Facts about Banjo-Kazooie" Twitter account, it has alot of fun facts and clarifications and development stuff from Nuts and Bolts, and personally it really made me love this game ever more. I plan on one day making a whole like 5 hour long video on why I love this game so much and why it deserved more (fun fact before the game bombed there was plans for a Nuts and Bolts 2) only problem is ive always been stuck on how to format it. Also might just be my probably 1000 hours in the game but the controls just seem like a "skill issue" lol. Also yeah great video btw forgot to say that

I never finished it, and when I tried to put it in and play it almost ten years later, I realized I forgot how to play. I was still upset I never got the 3rd Platforming entry I've been craving ever since I beat Tooie many years ago. Maybe someday it will happen (It will, just you wait!) but I think this game is a lot of fun for what it is. It's still just as funny as Tooie, has that dry British charm, and while it may not be very visually appealing to me, I can see why it has it's fans. I've been saying this for years, but Blast Corps would've been the perfect IP for a game like this. Building your own vehicles to blow shit up? Hell yeah sign me up! Wasn't a huge fan of the Rare team shitting on what made the first two so popular and iconic in the first place, but oh well, not all jokes can land. Bottom line, is N&B the best BK game? Hell no (That stays true to the goat Tooie) . Is it a bad game? Far from it, but I don't think it was the best fit for the Bear & Bird.

It should be noted that Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts has as much of a chance of success as Crash of the Titans and Mind over Mutant. To wit, Tears of the Kingdom shows that a vehicle builder CAN work in an established IP. Admittedly, TotK had years of refining in development AND still plays like a Zelda game. But still, if Super Mario Odyssey proves the Titans era can work, then Nuts & Bolts could too. As for how Nuts & Bolts could've worked, just make the vehicle aspect an addition to the duo's expanded moveset rather than a separate mode altogether. Like, if you can still do Talon Trot and Rat-a-tat Rap on the vehicle. Alternatively, make it clear the vehicle segment is part of the platforming segment as we saw in Kirby Planet Robobot.

I feel like Nuts and Bolts’s reputation mostly comes from really poor timing, Banjo was gone for 8 years and the game released for the series 10th anniversary alongside rereleases of the first two games, so there’s obviously going to be some discontent with people going into Nuts and bolts due to its drastic change in gameplay. Also about the game being insecure about existing.. yea that’s pretty accurate probably because it was going to be a platformer originally. The original idea was a remake of Banjo Kazooie with the idea that the game would change a lot of elements as it went on (Mumbo’s mountain having a boss fight and Humba Wumba being present as two examples) but due to the backlash towards Conker live and reloaded (Which was a fine remake for all intents and purposes but people didn’t like the censorship added), Rare wanted to take the game in a new direction thinking 3D platformers were not as successful as they used to be. I definitely feel while the game itself isn’t a bad game, everything leading up to the game’s release lead it to gaining its infamous reputation.

I think another good example of this was phenomena is with the Super Mario Galaxy games. Mario Galaxy 1 is my favorite video game of all time, and a shit ton of people love Galaxy 2 even more than that. Both games had stellar atmosphere and some of the best level design and gameplay in the whole series. Mario Galaxy 1 especially because it’s the only mainline Super Mario game to date to actually have a competently written story that goes beyond “Mario saves Peach or someone besides Peach”. So when Super Mario 3D Land and 3D World came around, they felt like inherent downgrades because they actively were smaller in scope and less imaginative than previous games. 3D World especially blended in with all the generic New Super Mario Bros sequels that were coming out around the end of the 2000’s into the mid 2010’s. We were unable to see the things 3D World did right because most of its identity appeared to be ripped from Mario games most of us agreed were better than it. Nowadays with the Switch port the game’s gotten its just dues for sure. Even beyond that, Super Mario Odyssey has been praised as one of the best games in the series and I was one of the people who didn’t really enjoy it all that much compared to Sunshine or the Galaxy games, I even enjoyed 3D World more. With Odyssey, I had heard all its praise be jammed down my throat by every gaming journalist and youtuber under the sun, but I hadn’t seen anyone covering the inherent flaws the game had and how a lot of the game just didn’t gel together as much as previous Mario games, at least in my opinion. I had seen both sides of a gaming debate, either being on the majority side or the minority side in terms of thoughts, where I eventually grew to love Mario 3D World, while Mario Odyssey went from one of my favorites on a first play-through to one I almost never come back to. Then finally, AstroBot came around, and much like with Tears of the Kingdom and Nuts & Bolts, nearly EVERYONE who talked about the game mentioned how it was essentially the third Super Mario Galaxy game people had been asking Nintendo to make for 14 years. A game that wasn’t as railroad and generic as something like 3D Land, or as open world and kinda unfocused as Mario Odyssey, the perfect sweet spot of 3D platforming that I love from games like Spyro, Banjo, and the older 3D Mario games from the 2000’s. I realized what I wanted wasn’t MORE of what already exists, but a game that takes the foundations of those earlier games and evolves them to a whole new level. Experimentation is never a bad thing for a series, but in a lot of cases, some things work out and others just don’t, its different for everyone!

Im honestly getting so tired of the whole "internet celebrities dictate the opinion on games" thing. Its even more fucking annoying when the discussion makes a 180° turn just because one guy said "well acshually..." because damn, people barrage games to the ground but suddenly it is a masterpiece, or the discussion shapes into how it always being "overrated". It has been happening a lot in the Persona community, where they treat the remake of P3 as trash just because one guy said on a video that the game lost "its charm" just because it doesnt look al muddy and dark like the PS2 one, and they really act as if the old ass PS2 game that was HATED for years due to how weirdly written it was and how bad the gameplay was is a gem that we never appreciated... Even though the remake fixes literally everything but hey, i guess having crunchy ass textures on everything is way more important than being an actual videogame.

Something I've been wondering recently that might be relevant... Was this game being the series finale a blessing in disguise? For one, "Post-360 Xbox" and "handling IP well" do not belong in the same sentence, but also I feel like this game is an example of the kind of wild creativity gaming had in the 2000s... that was almost entirely stamped out seemingly the instant the 2010s began because critics complained it wasn't how games used to be, leading to nostalgic slop that tries to pretend genuinely good ideas never happened because everybody was collectively gaslit into thinking they were bad so hard it took roughly two decades for any of them to be reconsidered beyond "not like the 90s so it sucks" (Sonic being the prime example - "dark age" my ass - but it happened elsewhere). I feel like if a Banjo revival happened in the 2010s, there's a decent chance it would end up being a "be careful what you wish for" scenario where we get another platformer that brushes NaB under the rug and just gives us a soulless rehash of the first game and maybe Tooie

I recently played it again after almost 7 years since my first time, and enjoyed it quite a bit. It's not (for me) the masterpiece everyone claimed to be, but a fun game nonetheless. I am now playing Majora's Mask and I am enjoying it quite a lot.

Yeah honestly, I’ve never quite understood the negative criticism. It was an extremely fun game. If anything the criticism was in the wrong place, most of my complaints are with the Terrarium of Terror. That was the only time where I genuinely disliked the game but even some of the challenges there were alright.

You know, I always thought that this was a great game but not a great Banjo game... kind of like how Sonic Frontiers was a really fun game, but not really feeling like a proper Sonic game as far as mechanics. Oh wait, people really _like_ that one. So what's their excuse here?
@ehhorve857Ай бұрын
desperation. frontiers was published after the 3rd series ruining disaster that year. so it's a bit of an inverse situation, banjo build and pilled was a different game after 2 good games (5 if you know the series), and frontiers was a different game after 5 bad games.

I actually played Nuts n Bolts when I was a kid - never having played the original or the sequel. I had so much fun making flying machines and dicking around with my stupid car creator, it was just so much fun to go beep beep! I attribute this to how I find flying a digital plane extremely fun [I literally stopped playing that new saints row game purely because it didn’t have an airport for me to steal a plane. I was so mad] So when I saw JonTron’s video in his hayday, I had a similar reaction to when you saw a youtuber say Shadow’s ost sucks: “Aw, true.” Now don’t get me wrong, the intro sequence was kinda donkey balls, but as a kid I literally skipped all the dialogue so why should I have cared GIVE ME MY CAR PLANE

I remember hearing that the reason why N&B exists and Banjo-Threeie not, is because the dev team didn't wanted to make Banjo-Threeie. They wanted to make a Meta remake from the first game, where many things would slowly change, like changing bosses (Instead of Conga, they would be a huge ass termit) and new upgrades. There was a racing game in works too, both got mixed, and N&B was born lol And imo about N&B? Honestly yeah, even as a kid i've wondered why people hate it, i've only played the DEMO back then and i had a blast. Then i got the full game (I haven't finished yet, it's a bucket list thing) and man oh MAN, IT'S FUN AS FUCK. It didn't needed that backlash, but i hope these years opinions will finally change.

I dont care much about the game from a single player perspective but me and my friends had a blast in multiplayer. We would set a goal/task and then create a vehicle for that task and compete. Shout out to the sumo gamemode! that was hilarious!

to be fair a lot of the normalboots guys all had very similar tastes as they gaslight entire generations thinking starfox adventures is also horrible just because it’s not a starfox game but a zelda clone. they also were notorious about shitting on sonic when it’s pretty widely popular that sonic in 2000’s despite some lows still was actually cool.

@lukashm42982 ай бұрын
Fuck yeah, dude! I had nuts and bolts as a kid too. I remember it being super jank but really fun despite it. So I was confused when I saw the amount of hate the game had garnered. I didn't play the originals until my late teens, so I didn't see the game as the lost sequel everyone wanted. I Instead enjoyed the game for what it actually was, not a masterpiece by any metric but a good time nonetheless. I realised that most of the people who were complaining had never even played the game to begin with. Some of them hadn't even played the originals. They were just spreading hate because they heard others do the same. People are dumb, but props for standing by your opinion despite it!

I think Grant Kirkhope put it best with a tweet he made a while ago. Basically saying that Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts is a good game, it just shouldn't have used the Banjo-Kazooie IP and just been its own original game. Similar to sentiments that people have to something like Resident Evil 6, where it's a good game, just not a good Resident Evil
@thelifedragon2156Ай бұрын
i played it the day it came out, and even at the time, i remember thinking "this game is ok. not amazing, and not really a banjo game but not bad" i ended up play another rare game made for the system after that was even better though, kameo: elements of power. no one played it but it was pretty good for the time. though id say nuts and bolts has actually aged better than it.

nuts and bolts would probably have been received marginally better if the opening cutscene (among other moments) wasn’t so mean spirited towards the n64 games and the fans. also if L.O.G was the villain like originally planned
