It should be noted that Papyrus originally did not have lower case letters. Those were added later which is why they don't seem to quite fit in You should do a video on wingdings. I remember playing around with as a teen on my parent's computer. I never figured out what it was good for

In the old days of printing (like, the "literal movable metal block type" days of printing), "dingbats", or "printer's ornament's", were... well... "printer's ornaments" actually sums it up quite nicely, really. They were type blocks or even _plates_ that had dots or squares or stars or arrows or snowflakes or pointing hands or little flowers or ivy-like designs or really _anything_ other than letters and numbers on them. Printers would use them to decorate page margins and chapter or section titles, add a little pizzazz to bulleted lists, fill empty space between paragraphs (or empty space in general), all kinds of "ornamental" purposes. If you happen to read fanfiction, you've probably seen (or been) an author who uses patterns of asterisks and carets and tildes between paragraphs or point-of-view changes. _This_ is what they have in mind. Wingdings is WINdows' "DINGbat font" (see what they did there?). If you don't know how to use Word's more advanced decorative features (or you don't _care_ to learn, or you don't have the time, or you're living in the 1990s and those fancier features don't exist yet), you can set the font to Wingdings, adjust the size and color, and just use your _keyboard_ to decorate your text instead of having to deal with menus and downloading and licensing fees and all that junk. All you have to do is figure out which keys correspond to your (or your boss') favorite symbols and decorations. It was never meant to be "read" like some sort of code; it's just your keyboard pulling double-duty as a basic art tool.

I was born in 90, papyrus and comic sans were the fonts of my time and I won't stop loving them just cuz people made it cool to hate on them. PREACH GABI!!! I'm a graphic designer and typography nerd and I greatly appreciated this video! Yes, the only things that make a font bad, that is badly designed, are a lack of consistency in style and a lack of functionality which largely comes down to issues with spacing. Huge kudos to Gabi for actually giving the correct definition of kerning! I feel like there are a number of people with graphic design degrees who think that kerning is the space between all letters, which is incorrect, tracking is the space between all letters. Kerning is the space between pairs of letter as Gabi correctly stated. I didn't know that Papyrus was originally bought by Letraset but that makes total sense. Letraset was a company that made these sheets of transfers that would have all the characters of a font in various sizes that were used by graphic designers to do mock-ups in the days before computers. You would use a burnishing tool and go over whatever letter you wanted to use and the letter would transfer onto your art, kinda like using tracing paper. Because Letraset was used so much in advertising and poster graphics there were lots of decorative fonts available as Letraset transfers, and it makes complete sense that Papyrus was one of them. The thing the designer never would have anticipated was that this decorative font that was meant to evoke something very specific would be given to the masses to be used for any random thing. My frustration with the hate towards Papyrus is exactly what Gabi explained, that it has appropriate uses and in the right context is perfectly fine, but it shouldn't be used for everything bc it has a very specific look. I love the designs on the Arizona Iced Tea cans, Papyrus is totally appropriate there, and I see nothing wrong with any vaguely mediterranean restaurant using Papyrus, that is what it was meant for! But it was designed for a different era. Nowadays a lot of decorative fonts have tons of alternate characters, come with border elements and cool symbols and dingbats and really give the user the ability to create logo designs with the font elements alone. Papyrus is decorative font that is very of its time and feels one-dimensional compared to what newer fonts can do, but it was well designed and doesn't deserved to be loathed (and judged) by so many... (especially bc so many of its most vocal opponents don't know jack shit about typography and use fonts that actually are badly designed (i.e. free fonts from dafont) without even realizing it....bc they don't understand that consistency and spacing are what make font design extremely difficult and Papyrus was actually designed by a pro)
