Wow! This video is doing really well, thank you all for watching it! I'm working on another NYC subway scavenger hunt type video that I would like to release this week. I won't spoil it but stick around if you want to see it. If you have suggestions for other videos, lemme know. My goal is to make videos about things in transport and the city with nice editing and visuals to help.

Thank you for the heart logo. Many thing of which I have been fond of like an old fashioned children's playground compared to today's playground. And in a store for a penny I could put in a buble gum machine for chewing gum. Most of the adult TV and movie stars I adored are now dead. And many places in NYC are unrecognizable for me today. One of my earliest memories was my first day in Kindergarten in Flushing, Queens in September 1961.

Yup. A lot of people don't realize that both the E and F ran those R46s in the 1980s. Because of "dwell times" the MTA took them off the E in the 1990s and it dealt with the R32s, sturdy but nowhere near as nice, cars from 1990s to 2008. The locals got the R46s in the 1990s but used to run mostly older cars in the 1980s. The propulsion is quiet and whines out. Don't know why the propulsion on the newer trains are so loud, especially Siemens.
@chasemartin4450

Newer trains use AC motors rather than the DC motors used on older models, and engineers designing them build barebones power electronics which are low-cost but make a lot of noise. Quiet power electronics for these motors exist (they can be found in nearly all electric cars and many high-quality personal EVs, all of which use AC motors) but I guess management doesn't think they're needed on trains.

Wanna add some comments rq - The R44s and R46s were built like railcars due to the fact that at the time the MTA wanted to have a line run through the LIRR, coming out from the 63rd St line on the F onto LIRR ROW until Forest Hills where the line would go back into the QBL. The project was called the Queens Superexpress but never happened. Provisions for it are right after 21st/Queensbridge with tunnels continuing straight while the tracks take a sharp turn to merge with the QBL. This would’ve been linked up with the 2nd Av line as you mentioned. - More or less (imo) the trains represent the M3s running on the LIRR. take me as a subway nerd but I’m just saying lmao Btw props to you for your excellent editing skills. Mad impressive. Earned my respect. ✌️
@robert.halpern
@robert.halpern 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for writing all that! Never heard of the Queens Superexpress before, unfortunately I can totally see why they canned it. They already have so many massive multi-decade projects there's no way that one would have finished on time and on budget. It's cool how different cars from different sections can feel so similar based on when they were made. The R46, M3, and Shoreliner cars were all made within 10 years of each other and it sort of shows. Anyways, the superexpress looks like a really interesting topic. Thank you, now gonna do some reading on it.

I love the R46 cars. I grew up riding these cars. The very first R46 cars I rode was on the (F) line and then eventually I started riding more R46 cars on the (A) and (R) lines and also the Rockaway (S) shuttle. I know that they ran on the (G) line and also the discontinued (V) line but boy I would have love to ride them on those lines. These cars will forever be an important part of my childhood, ok yes they are starting to show their age, they been running for a long time and it’s sad to know that they will soon be retired and replaced by the newer cars which I think they’re ok, they’re decent and modern but the R46 cars are timeless and they will forever have a special place in my heart. The R46 cars provided long, wonderful years of service and served the MTA very well, so they will be sadly missed once they are retired.

I remember this model a little differently. This model was considered an Edsel of the subway fleet. It almost crippled the system with its unreliability and service issues. It also had a poor MTBF rating which is measured in miles. The only reason the R-46 is in service because of the production issues associated with the new trains.

The speed was nothing when compared to what is collectively known as the R9s built from different order from 1930 to 1940. They were the most common subway trains on the 6th and 8th Ave, lines in the 1960s. The F line within 1 minute already passed on the express tracks 2 local stations. I am a New Yorker who grew up in NYC during the Mad Men era! I was on the front looking out the front door on the Queens Blvd. Express on the F. The conductor opened a d closed thr doors in between the subway cars in the middle of the train.

Counter points from a train crew member. the AC doesn't work in the cab. there is nothing in the cab to hold on to when my partner is doing 40 up CPW and I'm bouncing all over the place, save for the master controller itself. And yes, they do NOT rock, they bounce. there is ONE buzzer in the cab and it's on the operator console instead of how every other train has three buzzers per cab (one on each door control consoles along with the train operator's console), meaning i need to leave my window to use it when operating on the off side. the handbrake chain is constantly banging against it's housing the TO's seat does not fold up like on every other train. The side destination sign connectors sometimes foul up and I have to cross over to the other cab to set the other half of the train. Literally the only thing the 46 has going for it is the spacious cab (compared to the closets on the R68s) and the sideways sliding windows (except when operating from the alternate position, where it can hit you pretty hard if you're not holding it open when your partner takes power. had one smack me in the face first time I did that) Positives of the other trains. R68s... none, they suck. R143/R160.... the most user friendly control interface R179... has a cup holder!

Stuff like the straps/bars to hold on to and the handbrake chain should be simple enough to fix I'd guess but they might not be a priority to the MTA because of how soon they will be replaced anyways. I'm guessing they fixed the AC for you in future cars but still that seems tough for TOs. Hopefully the R211 just further improves on this situation.

All subway cars used to be noisy and rough like the R32s only worse. The decor wasn't all that great either. Then came the R44 and it was quiet, smooth. I think they introduced some new kind of suspension involving pressurized air, but can offer no explanation for the dramatic change in noise level. (Of course they were air conditioned, and people were accustomed to barrelling along with windows open on sides and ends. The length of the R44-46s makes them impressive. They used to have glass in the partitions by the doors where now there's nothing. (you'd think they wouldda caught on after all the ratan seat cushions got slashed.) And the The flourescents showing through the paper advertising and also shining down was cool, but the best was the classy wallpaper with NY + NYC seals. (not really sure what seals they are but have been meaning to take a picture, though I never carry the phone.)

I'm living in NYC for over 5 years now and from my experience of taking the subway on a daily basis I feel that these r46 trains are the best. they got the best seating arrangements according to me that allows looking outside through the window unlike the new trains where you only got to look at the face of the person sitting at your opposite seat. Also, the stopping time on each station is less as r46 has manual announcement that saves a lot of time unlike the new trains that must play the whole automated announcement on each station. I now feel sad that the F trains do not have the r46 cars anymore. I rode them just before the covid hit but now I do not see them anymore. I liked those cars so much that I would skip a few trains with new cars just to board on the next F train with r46 cars. If I got some extra time, I still often board on r46 A trains for some part on my way to school in Brooklyn from queens.

If you grew up in the 1970s like I did, I actually grew up in the 1960s, you realize just how big an improvement the R44 was over any train that came before it. The interior was amazing, almost seeming like a luxury train compared to the others and definitely seeming like a mini-Long Island Rail Road. The quietness and smoothness were leagues apart from any existing train. And, to be honest, for its age, even now, the R46, based heavily on the R44, is still a quiet train if it is reasonably maintained. These cars are far more unique than the same-old R211s with their tiny windows coming. I don't love the R211s and wish the MTA would break the mold from the R143 look. Adding the bullet back and blue instead of black on the front and new lights doesn't change that from the side, they still look like R143s. The R46 has served well and it is time for them to go. But, they deserve respect for being trains that brought the MTA into the modern era.

The 75’ length has been awkward for the R46 (and R44 and R68) from the beginning, but I love them anyway. The R46 interior is a genuinely nice place to be. I like the softer lighting, the seats, and the seating arrangement. I love the fake wallpaper pattern of NYS and NYC seals on the walls. And as a child of the ‘80s woodgrain is my favorite color and its gradual disappearance-first it vanished from electronics, then building interiors, and now it’s disappearing from trains-has been traumatic for me. The NJT Arrow III’s could well disappear from the rails at the same time as the R46 and then where am I supposed to look when I need to see a picture of wood?

The 46s are smoother riding than the 68s. We call them Cadillacs because of the big cabs. The Coney Island 68s tend to have spotted wheels like crazy because of the Sea Beach and Brighton lines. The 46s biggest issue is dead motors.

R44/46 were tuned down after the Williamsburg Bridge disaster in the 90. Field shunting was disabled because of signals..and overall mistaken made by operations. This lead to mechanically slowing trains, installing slow timers all over the system...and slow zones. With the newer cars,the speeds were not reduced to 40 mph. The new cars are able to sustain a speed of 55 ,but generally don't get to travel above 50. The Queens Blvd express can operate speeds of 65mph, as the R46 did so in "regulated mode" . The cars were actually purchased to operate on the New routes the MTA had planned to build from the 1967-68 new routes plan. The Second Ave SUBWAY was the primary reason. By the time the new equipment was delivered,none of the routes were completed... The Archer Avenue subway and part of the 63rd st Tunnel was completed by the late 80s..making the whole process pointless. A short version of The SAS was finally opened in 2017 with 3 stations. The R46s didn't see service there until a major car swap occurred due to CBTC. The current Broadway line operates R46 ,68 and 68a subway cars. The 46s has finally served its purpose.

@robert.halpern
@robert.halpern Жыл бұрын
The Shoreliners are great and their retirement will be sad, I don't think anybody could reasonably hate those cars. My only wish is that they get converted to electric if the MTA ever chooses to reuse the general Shoreliner design. The Amfleet cars are by far my favorite commuter rail stock, the metal lines are iconic.

@@randomhuman-012 It's hard to guess... the Shoreliner III and IV are both reliable enough to stay in service even maybe until 2030 but they probably won't electrify the whole MNRR until well past 2030. So the MNRR would either need the more of the double-decker diesel car the LIRR uses (C3) or they need to produce another, newer Shoreliner. Who knows? Curious to what you think will happen.
@randomhuman-012
@randomhuman-012 Жыл бұрын
@@robert.halpern Well until the MNRR is electrified, it would be cool to see bi level cars on the railroad. But I think what is more likely to happen is for the MTA to order a newer diesel car, like the Shoreliner V or something. But when the MNRR is electrified, all the shoreliners will have to go, and trains like the M7 and maybe the M9, will take over. It will be both good and bad, good for efficiency (not having to change trains) and bad because I love all the diesel equipment right now, and I’m sure other people do too.

The train really does make some odd noises from the inside when it brakes though, however, I prefer the R46 for it's smoother ride. For me the most noticeable area on the system that I can bring to your attention is the very slight but tight and abrupt curve at 23rd street. As the A train being express, it goes over that curve, or kink, whatever you want to call it, at a high speed. I feel it a lot more on the R179 and God forbid you are not holding on to anything. I hardly feel the same jerk on the R46. All of the R46s movements feel delayed and somewhat graceful that I haven't experienced on any 60 foot long cars.

@@trijetz3562 yeah the train actually goes over a switch while proceeding to bypass 23 street. That's why it's so rocky and bouncy especially because it's going 35-40 mph over the switch. R46's are cool but the trains are not at much fault its mostly how the yards take care of them, Compare Coney Island's R46's to Piktins, Piktin doesn't clean Coney Island does and does regular Maintenace checks and they dont break down as much as the A and C lines R46's because piktin doesn't care, they just want the R211's and then just leave them dirty without a care on the cleaniness.

I completely agree with the narrator of this video. I prefer the roll signs of the r68 and the r68 A's. They are easier to read. They are clear and they identify both terminals without passengers having to wait for the sign to change. The 75 ft cars and the seating in the r46 are much more comfortable and spacious than these newer cars that they are replacing them with. The lighting and the decor looks a little more inviting as opposed to the newer cars that look like Hospital er's with their grey demeanor. The MTA would be smart to keep these cars a few more years as they are reliable, spacious and more comfortable.

To me it's sort of the opposite, I want to know the actual destination of the train quickly. If you're about to miss the train you can glance up and see where it's going. I agree with you on the having to wait for the destination being annoying but I don't think it's that long of a wait. I also hope they fix the dull gray on the newer cars. Easy fix: use the alt paintjob that we see on the R160 sometimes. I'm guessing people like it more than the gray.

The R46s resembling the LIRR/ MNRs M-1/ M-3s is not by accident. The MTA had incorporated that design on its fleet back then which included the R40M, R42s, R44s, 46 and up until they started purchasing the newer generation subway cars which you see now taking over the subway fleet. The R46s weren't reliable at first but after the Rockwell trucks were changed and more so after their MK rebuilds, these ladies earned their keep. They feel more like a commuter train rather than a subway. I miss seeing them on the F line!

Yeah. On my trip to New York City recently I noticed this. Trains built in the 70s and 80s on the B division (lettered lines) have window seats! Unfortunately, they are not planning to add window seats on any new trains. The reason for this is, capacity of the train sets overall. They take up more room than sideways seats. so you end up with much less standing room. I also think the interior on these was designed super well. The 70s and 80s were honestly the best era of public transportation design. You had warm lighting, wood grain accents, and often better seating! Chicago’s old 2600 series L cars also come to mind, though Chicago actually kept their bucket seat design and upgraded it with fabric backs on the newer cars thankfully!
