Yea other than that you didn’t really didn’t miss anything. She is described as having pale skin and red hair, but again the argument I made is that she is a Jötun, a shapeshifter, they don’t have a single form. There’s also an old term, “moors”, used for black nobles. They were highly respected during medieval times because they were rich. You can find lots of paintings of moors. So it’s not WRONG to have a dark toned person walking around in Northern Europe at that time. Honestly, as long as it’s a good story I don’t care. Like you, I don’t notice race unless someone else points it out. It’s not the first thing that comes to my mind. I kinda like it actually. She’s beautiful, which is kinda accurate to the mythology, and I think it’s a really good change that they made. I think when the game comes out and people get involved with the story people won’t care about the color of her skin anymore.

Just curious, I'm creating a story that includes the Egyptian gods. I've described them as being fair/pale skinned. Would this be inappropriate. Divinity has been traditionally seen by most cultures as being being bright, white, etc. Its sort of the opposite of the god of war problem. There weren't really any black people in ancient Scandinavia nor were there really bright almost pale skinned people in ancient egypt. What are your thought?

Exactly my thought. People in the comments like "but in the mythology!!" The mythology doesn't matter that much when Loki/Atreus was born just 10 or so years before Fimbulwinter, his a greek demi-god (although Fárbauti's name can mean "anger striker", so it kinda fits. And what most people forget is that there were/are multiple interpretations of the myths, so there never was ONE Thor, and he HAS to look a specific way.

@@James-mw1yf wouldn't say he barely noticed since he was trying to finish what he thought was a horn/goblet of drink, but simply couldn't, as it was later revealed to be the ocean. Also, a person can be muscular yet have a fair amount of fat, in fact it's most commonly the case. Traditional strongmen, linemen (football), and sumo wrestlers for example are very strong, but have somewhat fatty guts. It's also worth noting that Norse and Greek views of physical perfection differ so it makes sense that Thor won't have the same body type as say Heracles.

@alienz8641
@alienz8641 Жыл бұрын
@@dococ3272 I don’t think “noble” would be the right word to use when describing Odin in the myths. There is literally a story in Norse Mythology where Odin gains and exploits the trust of a giantess named Gunnlöd, sleeping with her for three nights to steal the Mead of Poetry guarded by her. In that same story, he also tricks a group of otherwise innocent giants into accidentally killing each other with scythes by throwing a whetstone into the air. I agree that the design for Odin in GOW was kind of underwhelming, but it kind of makes sense given his status as a trickster god in the original myths. (IE Intentionally hiding his true power to deceive his enemies). Besides, a lot of modern mythology-inspired fantasies like the MCU for instance, seem to forget that in addition to being a king and a warrior, Odin was also very much a trickster and a con-man who would lie, cheat, and kill to further his goals.

And was only talking about Thor.* But since it was an ordeal, let’s talk about her because she is way off of her actual depictions in actuality. So let’s get down to the facts here. A lot of depictions of her are untold on her true appearance, due to her being a giant, though this is in my own research and I could’ve just found mostly bad sources, but if were being real here she is most often described with these traits, Most of which are in paintings or books; *Giantess and Late Wife of Loki, Angrboda, furthermore known as 'the harbinger/bringer of grief' or a ‘mother of monsters’ and had been depicted or described as having bright yet dull reddish hair to interpret that of dried blood, a tall yet masculine physique due to her giant heritage, and bright pale skin.* This is the best depiction possible of a basic overall description, Vikings didn’t have a lot of people of darker skin tones in they’re mix because at that time, they just didn’t cross race gaps in terms of meeting new races. If you weren’t them, most likely the only long shaft you’d see was a sword. Not to mention the climates and area’s they lived in didn’t allow much of them to get a tanned complexion. An average description of a Viking being a man/woman of Pale complexions, Lighter hair shading(Normally Red/Blonde/or sometimes Brunette), with mostly Blueish Green/or Brown eyes. At this point in time, while they would force themselves upon women when theyd invade, they wouldn’t just come back for those women, they’d leave and never come back, or worse, kill the woman after forcing themselves on them.

The girth that you see strongmen have is actually used to help lift weights. Similar to how deadlifters use belts as leverage to lift the bar with, strongmen literally use their stomachs as leverage to pick up large weights, like the Atlas stones. The extra bulk is also used to protect the their internal organs and their bones especially their spines. Bodybuilding focuses more on the appearance of the muscles and how defined they can get. While they are still strong, bodybuilders are built more for show instead of functionality while strongmen built for maximum functionality.

I’m a Norwegian who loves norse mythology and viking history, and i LOVE how they made Thor and Tyr. They look awesome in the game, and I think i’ve never seen a better representation made of Thor in a long while. I like marvel, but marvel’s thor is a completely different person, you can’t really compare cus the only thing marvel has right is the names tbh. Also, angrboda being dark skinned didn’t bother me at all, there were different skintones back in the viking era, ofc the majority was white people but there were others too, i like how they made her. The game changed many aspects of the mythology sure but i’m super impressed by how accurate things is aswell. I love GoW’s take on norse gods and mythology. Edit: typos

The design of Thor wasn't dumb or "progressive", it was well informed and accurate. Mythology is in some cases a lot more realistic than modern media in those ways: it gives an accurate representation of what was accepted in culture and in history. The Greek Gods were all very gorgeous, save the few black sheep in the herd, but they were all depicted with smaller endowments because it was a sign of wisdom in Ancient Greek society. I still hear people write that off that it was just made up to make people feel better about themselves, and it's so nice to see modern media taking a shift towards a more "realistic" depiction of characters who are based on an existing idea or character.

Seriously, black washing has been happening for years in media regarding historically white figures, it’s inaccurate and promoting a political agenda. I have plenty of examples I don’t mind Thor being built like that, but Angrboda being Asian is clearly forced diversity and it’s inaccurate to Viking culture. I think my only "problem" with Thor's design is definitely the lack of body hair. I always kind of imagined that he'd have hair on his gut and chest, bit I guess it is entirely plausible that he'd be smooth-bellied. Still, I feel like it would look better with just a little bit of hair. Edit: *Alright this one's for my new acquaintance the IrishguyfromIreland, written in big bold letters because they need it: I DO NOT hate the design. I hardly even CARE about the design. I said I personally felt like I would like it more if he had a small amount of body hair on his gut and chest. Even then, my opinion on it has changed as I've grown to like his design after playing the game and when some people pointed out how difficult it would be to pull off. I never even once implied that I hated the design, just that it was different to what I imagined. I certainly never said that MY OPINION was the be-all and end-all and that "everyone else is wrong and should hate the game because this was slightly different to what I assumed Thor would look like", so I don't understand why some people are treating it like I said that. I even said that it would be "entirely plausible" for him to be a clean-shaven boi and never even said that it was a bad decision/it didn't make sense. The fact that I need to elaborate so deeply on this is genuinely disheartening. I just don't want to delete my comment because of a few, for search of a better word, dumbasses getting salty over it.* Edit 2: Okay, so I was drinking a bit when I wrote that but I'm not going to delete it because it's actually funny af how it's longer than my original comment. Love this depiction of Thor, it goes well with the Nordic side of the God of Thunder. Always felt that the Chiseled Gods were more the Greek/Roman thing anyway as thats the depictions they always presented with their gods. While the Nordic folk made their gods, like them, but with godly powers. Thor being a Large Bulky Strongman makes perfect sense when you consider the energy going through his body and how much he would need to consume to maintain his form... Have no worries with Angrboda. She looks wonderful and very druidic natured as much as she shared with Freya in her understanding in 'Giant Magic', as much so as Thrúd in her fiery hair screaming unbridled rage and power that courses through her blood from her father and mother... My issues are with the 'Reasoning and Excuses' from the defenders that try and shut down the "But theres no POC in Nordic lands" or whatever the 'haters' that do have issues with Angrboda's appearance. Joutans have long been a unique race themselves, not only that but fantasy and there were no real discriptions about their appearance beyond size and shape. Unlike Elves being discribed as the "Fair" race in the Tolkien verse, LoTR:RoP.... Anyway..... Why do I have issues with their reasoning and defense? Because their statements are "That there WERE PoCs in Nordic lands, do your research..." Ok, sure. Lets agree that there were PoCs in Nordic lands, guess what, they were very much not free people or people of importance or people who were treated equally. They were Slaves, Chattel, Entertainment, Prizes, Sacrifices. They held very little importance in any thing that would have been part of the Mythos or History other then perhaps as spoils of war or raids. Maybe a scrifice to Odin for the year. Yeah Nordic folk did Blood Sacrifices remember. It was the effing 5th Century, 1500+ years ago. The world didn't abolish slavery fully (or at least close to it) till the late 1800s and even then there was still latent issues of rights that prevented a PoC from owning land or being important. Stop just saying "THERE WERE PoCs IN THIS AREA OF HISTORY" and just leaving at fact that they did EXIST there without addressing HOW they lived there... So yeah, again, no issue with how the character looks, issue with what the folk say when defending it with half hearted answers... /rant

Totally agree. Having experienced the game finally myself, I would say that Thor's design is perfect for him and his characterization. If he was in a Room with you, the Air would become so tense and thick you could cut it with a knife. The guy is intimating, without looking like a Monster, but you can also understand, where he comes from just by looking at him. Saying more would spoil the Story. Him looking off-putting may come from the fact that most Gods in the series were only depicted as monsters or the ideal man and women until now. As for Angrboda. I had at first feared, that she would become like a "token" / mary sue type character (that's what storytellers are good at creating nowadays), but no. She is a pretty good watcher-type character and finally someone similar enough to Atreus to hang out with. I don't get all the fuzz around the Skin color. This is a world, where a God, wielding thunder, punches a giant snake so hard, it travels back in time. A world where creatures exist, that can tear the fabric of space apart and unleash the dead just by throwing a tantrum, I don't think a character with darker-than-usual skin is that detrimental to the story.

Angrboda does not look like a local, that is the problem. If she look like a chinese that would be a problem too even wih a light skin. Norse neve meet those people( Chinese and any kind of Africans before so they would never think about gods looking like them). They should an actress with black african traits. Making the character with a white skin would not change this. It is not like michael jackson because a white European because he changed his skin tone because of his disease.

I looked up why the strongest men have guts, and from some quick research the answer (in bodybuilding at least) seems to be that: 1.) In order to lift heavy things, you need the weight to do that. "Weight lifts weight" is the exact quote I saw. 2.) The way calories work is they either get turned into muscle or fat. If the body uses the calories, it gets turned into muscle, and whatever is leftover gets turned into fat. Muscle and strength building requires a HUGE caloric intake, and the tradeoff for being the strongest is not all those calories are going to be used. And men tend to store their fat in their guts. So, being lean does not mean you will be at your strongest, but being at your strongest does not mean you will be at your healthiest. I could be wrong because this was just a quick google, so if I said something you know to be wrong or would like to elaborate, please do!

No calorie builds the size of muscle and protein feeds the muscles power. Bodybuilders tend to do what weightlifters do and bulk like crazy (to an extent that is very unhealthy) and then they burn off the calories so that their muscles are more visible. It’s mostly for the sake of bigger more defined muscles but also keep in mind bodybuilders also starve and dehydrate themselves for the lowest possible body fat percentage to look as ripped as possible. Weight lifters like Thor (an actual weight lifter not the god, which is very ironic) just consume as much calorie and proteins as they can fit into their day while lifting like crazy. They’re definitely a league of their own. They’re a lot stronger then body builders (who in their own right are a lot stronger than you and I) minus a few exceptions like Ronnie Coleman who was ridiculously strong for a body builder. Weight lifters tend to focus on big muscles but also stronger muscles, the bigger the muscle the more strength can be fit into it. Bodybuilders eat a lot for this reason but they don’t focus on lifting as heavy things as weight lifters do TLDR: calories is used to make the muscles bigger and protein is used to make the muscles stronger. This is why they eat so much. They do the same things but body builders and weight lifters focus on different things: *bodybuilders work on hypertrophy focusing on aesthetic whereas weight lifters focus on strength and endurance training*

Of course, historians also deny that it was primarily Caucasian as well but the point still stands. I did originally believe them to be primarily Black African but most studies I'm reading argue that while there is a African heritage, Greeks, Arabs and other indigenous folk living in that area were there. Not saying there were absolutely no blacks, and for sure there would be a larger portion in the population due to its proximity to Africa. As soon as I started watching the play through, (don’t have a PlayStation so watching it was the next best thing) I saw so clearly how and why they chose to go with Thor’s design. It made so much more sense to me for him to be large rather than look like the MCU’s version. That’s the difference between following more closely to the original myths than a superhero. Angrboda’s design? 0 issues whatsoever, as you said, little information on her in myths in the first place, and the only (full) giants in the game we have to put her side by side with is Faye who is beyond pale. Skin tone between the other characters are pretty drastic too. Who’s flipping out over Hildisvini? No one, that’s who.

Eh, I don't think there's any real issue with Norse mythological characters being dark skinned. The Dark Elves of Svartlfheim are described as being dark skinned and swarthy. Some even posit that the Dark Elves and the Dwarves refer to the same race. And Surtr's name means "the dark/swarthy one". I mean shit, do people really think that the ancient Greeks would fall under what we consider to be "white" today? They were pretty tan and brown themselves. Angrboda being dark skinned is such a non-issue, especially if one bothers to actually research the Norse myths.

I love fat Thor because he isnt described as a perfectly handsome supermodel all the time and is rather famous for his strenght and drunkenness. Do they look like Europeans to you, because of their skin tone? They made a character of Norse mythology an African. How fucking insulting. Imagine taking a piece of African mythology, like the Zulu, and making a game where one of their deities is a blonde, blue-eyed European. Just because your politics say that having white people everywhere is a good thing. People would, rightfully, be livid. In fact, that very thing happened with some of the movies centered in Egypt, and people got mad. Except this is even more egregious.
