In Norse Mythology, there are depictions of Thor being rather large. I think his depiction in the Marvel universe has altered people's view on the character. While it's a good performance, it's an inaccurate depiction of Norse Mythology. This one is truer to the source material.
@winterxiii

While I have no problem with this depiction of Thor and find it quite refreshing-to say it's truer to Norse mythology because he is large is false in accordance to this channel's words as well as other Norse Mythology historians. The only actual detail they give him in the texts are that his hair and beard are red. This means that GoW's version is definitely more accurate as he has red hair, but that's it; it's nothing about size.

As a Norwegian, this is the image of Thor I grew up with. Red head and a huge belly. Whoever claims this is disrespectful towards culture and stuff needs to check their sources. Marvel on the other hand is way different from the “cultural” image of Thor. 😅🤣 loves both versions, but Marvel is very different from the original tales and image of the Norse characters, Marvel Thor is American, that’s also why he is pictured differently than Thor in Scandinavian comics. I think the belly should have been a bit more of a square to fit the way I picture Thor, but I do agree that he has always been a big boy. Just so you know, Thor is portrayed as a serial killer in God of War based on Mimir's stories. He mostly kills giants, and he enjoys it. Giants are portrayed as the "good guys." However, we know this from the giants' perspective. We may see it from the gods' perspective in this sequel.

@@blackbloom8552 I feel that is what makes this series, at least the reboot distinctly interesting. At a time where we like to escape into power fantasies, where we make gods mortal by calling them superheroes, this is a nice antithesis to remind us that idealisation becomes corrupted really fast. It's one thing to dream of having super powers and be the good guy. It's another to face one's own reality and accept that one wouldn't be the good guy when one gets these superpowers because of you aren't the pinnacle of morality in ordinary life, why would you be with superpowers? All that would do is to amplify your best but also your worst behaviour and make it much more extreme. God of war is a good reminder of that and I believe that people don't like that. They want escapism, not facing reality in their fantasies.

To me, this depiction of Thor feels extremely accurate and realistic. He's got that 'Eddie Hall-ish' extreme strongman build, and seems like the kind of guy who could pick someone clean off the floor with one hand. Armor wise, although the armor isn't extremely practical, I feel like that is also extremely thematic. Thor has always been portrayed as foolhardy and bullheaded, so the wide open area in the chest could be a 'I gave you this much vulnerable area yet you can't kill me' kind of thing. He also shouldn't be built like Kratos, as the Norse ideal body is different from the Greek. Greek was all about form, while Norse was all about sheer strength. Just feels like it hit all the points for me

@@aserta The actual meaning or your opinion. In God of War all the gods are very human in their motivations. Kratos is driven by rage and despair in most of the games, and betrayed when he is tricked to slaughter his family. But when he's put in a position of authority like a general of Sparta or the new God of War, he becomes drunk with power. He is lustful, temperamental, prideful and only has a mild soft spot for children that remind him of his first daughter. Regardless of all of that, he won't hesitate to destroy a city or and all of humanity to pursue his own goals. Once he leaves the world of the Greek pantheon in ruins, he hates all the gods including himself. When he moves to the world of the Norse mythology he wants to live the simple life of a human putting his past behind him including his power. It's a struggle of what it means to be a man, a father and a force of chaos.

Eddie's pecs are massive, his biceps are defined and peaked, he has rounded shoulders, and you can see his abs on his large core. This Thor has zero pecs, and absolutely zero muscular definition or sign of muscle. People keep comparing him to a power lifter in physique which is entirely false as most power lifters are relatively balanced, but also higher weight power lifters LOOK strong. This Thor just looks like a 'God' of eating competitions. Which is fine. He doesn't have to be jacked to the teeth, but for the love of god stop saying he looks 'strong' like this. It's embarrassingly inaccurate and makes it very obvious you have zero knowledge about human anatomy or any form of competition physique for any kind of weight lifting.

As for the powerful thing the first god of war game in the Norse setting tells us how strong Thor is several time’s, and from what mimir say’s we can tell that he was like this already when doing said feat’s of strength, like killing all the giant’s. But putting aside all culture and lore we get from the game and real life we can guess that he’s strong simply from his build, the two main things that I see when I look at it are someone who has a lot of weight behind every punch (Even more so if he’s using his hammer) and that his build is very similar to strong men (The competitive strong men) the only real difference between this and a strong man is the fact that this Thor has a larger gut, which is probably because he is a fat lazy drunk.

With regards to Thor being an antagonist, that doesn't necessarily make him a villain. An antagonist is merely a foil for the protagonist, and God of Wars protagonist is Kratos. Kratos destroyed the world of Greek myth by slaying the gods, and in doing so unleashed chaos and destruction (for example, killing Poseidon caused the Earth's waters to rise and great storms to erupt unchecked). Thor could still fill his role as the protector of humanity and simply view Kratos as a threat.

I feel like something overlooked in this is that in the God of War game, Thor's described as a drunkard and is shown to be abusive towards his kids. Kratos kill both Magni and Modi in GoW. You kill one (can't recall which one was first), the other runs to Thor, Thor beats the shit out of him and tells him to go kill Kratos or not bother coming back. Then you kill the second son. This Thor, by default wants Kratos dead, or got sent to fight him by Odin because Kratos is stirring things up WAY too much to be ignored. This isn't "I'm here to protect humanity" Thor, this is "You killed my sons and relatives, you bastard!" Thor, or "I got sent here to kill you, so die already." Thor. Either way, he's probably gonna treat Kratos more like the Jotuun after they swiped Mjolnir than anything else. This game also isn't too kind to the Norse gods. Mostly in the sense that they are portrayed more like the Greek gods. Vain, sadistic, narcissistic, cocky. While this is (probably) done so Kratos will look like a good guy in comparison (now that he's not a rage fueled monster with barely a concept of mercy or restraint). It shows that even if you wanted a "good" interpretation of the gods, you're not likely to find it here just due to their narrative roles. This took less effort to pull of with the greek gods because they're (in simplified terms) assholes with superpowers and egos to match. It's not like the greeks pretended that wasn't the case when they wrote about them.

Although I understand your wariness of how his character might be affected by the writing of GoW. Deities within that franchise tend to be painted as the villains of the story. The devs described their interpretations Thor as a hedonistic one which also fits with Thor in myth. I believe as a hedonistic individual would eat and drink tons. He would sit, laugh and have a rotten good time with people. This I think is one of the best interpretations of Thor not because of any historical significance (Although it helps) but because it’s something new, it’s something different and it will be fun to explore especially as an antagonistic character. Also I like that he’s one of the antagonists. Keep in mind this is a franchise who’s story subtext is that the gods weren’t really people worth worshiping. Just look at God of War I, II, III, and all the additional games. Most of the time the characters we would usually associate as the “Heros” such as Hercules, Theseus and so on were in line with the myths to a degree but twisted the story to frame them as being more toxic than heroic.

Just cause people see thor as a hero type in marvel doesnt meant that he was that way in the mythology. I think thats where people are having a problem with it. I feel what's actually important to this debate is "Does the design fit the portrayal the devs are trying to create?" and I'd argue it does. Marvel Thor does this too. Marvel Thor is supposed to be a shiny paragon hunk because he is supposed to be beautiful and admirable and mythically powerful. This isnt that Thor. GoW Thor is described as a brutal, angry, lout. As Mimir even says "A fat dobber." While I'm totally understanding of the strongman physique vs. hunk physique arguments I keep seeing surrounding this image, I think its beside the point. Even if you give up and say "Yeah, this Thor is just fat." I think it serves the purpose the devs are trying to achieve which is de-mystifying Thor as this hero god. GoW Thor is a fat, abusive, angry drunk. He's a genocidal maniac who given his worlds most powerful weapon used it to kill everyone he could get at and then put himself out of work. It wouldnt surprise me at all to find out that the reason Thor seems to be leaning more toward the obese in his concept art is that he sits on his ass drinking and eating in Asgard because he has nothing to do anymore. He killed everyone he was supposed to or allowed to and now Odin has had him in de facto retirement til Ragnarok.

Bloodthirsty for giant's blood and completely ambivalent to the goings on of man. Keep in mind, this is a God of War game, humans haven't mattered since Kratos became deified and transcended his humanity, hell, in the last game you don't even meet any regular people that aren't spirits besides a group of nameless bandits that are immediately turned into draugr after getting dumpstered. What Kratos does have is a son who is half giant, and the last of that bloodline. My money is on Thor's wanting to tie that loose end putting him at odds with our favorite greek chain slinger.

The concept of the divine, incarnated/manifested in form is also the evolutionary process of adaptation to the environment. Our beauty standards are rooted in fitness, which ironically can promote obesity to a certain degree as a positive trait in times of starvation for example. Unless we have a highly co-operative population which denotes selfish behaviour... This process is constantly evolving, quite literally and to abstract the Ideals from the divine is lot attempt to track evolution backwards and see which constants we can find.

A bit late to the party, I know, but your final question about how GOW may depict Thor's personality got me thinking ... I do believe the direction GOW will take is to make Thor a straight-up antagonist who plays against his primary roll of friend and defender of humanity, but I believe they'll do it in an unexpected way. Throughout the game we're inundated with story after story of how shockingly violent Thor seemingly is, but making him some mustache-twirling (or I guess in this case beard-twirling) villain or a snarling madman wouldn't be a satisfying or even sensible subversion of his supposed loyal and friendly demeanor. I think what they're going to do is make him surprisingly cordial and eloquent. He'll speak calmly and clearly and present himself as unexpectedly professional (The "calm and reasonable person" line in the sequel trailer leads me to believe this). At the same time I think he'll be shown as someone who's shockingly good at putting on an act of being affable and quite charismatic. Basically, he'll be a true clinically defined psychopath; someone who's amazing at pretending like he could be the friend and defender of humanity, but in reality he's cold and empty and perfectly capable of mass slaughter with no remorse. In my opinion, a sophisticated elitist psychopath pretending to be friendly to the "lesser folk" would be the perfect opposite of a warm down-to-earth working Joe who'd move the nine realms to protect the people.

He´ll likely be a selfish and arrogant idiot. Kinda how the MCU Thor who isn´t bright and it´s way too confident and oblivious, but with an evil turn. Like, they´ll do what they did with greek gods too, take the most questionable of stories about them and use them to depict him as he is, but on the bad light no one imagines. Someone that is so praised that started to be the one that praises him the most, believing himself to be deserving of everything and of having the right to put his will over anyone and kill whoever opposes since it´s a mortal sin to be against the "might protector"

Thor in mythology is surprisingly reasonable, but has a tendency towards violence. He’s known for his short fuse, but this is slightly redeemed by him not holding grudges. When he visited giants in the myths, they wanted him to prove his worth by drinking a horn of mead without stopping, lifting a cat and wrestling an old lady. He failed at all and they mocked him relentlessly which pissed him off and he left, afterwards one of the giants admitted that they had used illusions to mask the real nature of things. The horn of mead was actually a literal ocean and he greatly reduced the level, the cat was the world serpent, and the old lady was literally time (or age, I forget) itself, the giants feared him, which is why they wanted him to prove himself in the first place. Thor accepted this and went on his merry way. He’ll probably not be too clever, but clever enough to know his own limitations, and when it comes to combat he’ll probably be a lot more wise to Kratos’ nature than Balder.

Having played the other games, they don't have a record of painting the gods in general in a favorable light. In the previous game, they basically portrayed Odin as a tyrannical egomaniac and the Jotun are victims of his lust for power and control. I think it fits with the themes they're going for though. I see the series as more of a commentary about religion in general, how we idealize these figures to justify our own morality. (Spoiler alert) At this point, Kratos wants nothing to do with the gods, good or bad. They did kill both of Thor's sons in the previous game though, so I imagine Thor could be portrayed as somewhat justified in retribution, but that still puts Kratos in a natural opposition to him.

I don't think GoW is a commentary on anything. I haven't played any of the games (oops) so I don't know if they're actually deep and shit, but I would imagine way back when the first one came out they just wanted to make a bad ass game where you could kick the shit out of the Greek gods. And if they make you beat the shit out of the gods they also want to give you a reason to do it with pleasure, so they portray them as deserving of the butt kicking.

God of war is using all of the events of the first three games more so in the last one to be trying to write a tale of abuse of power and lack responsibility by the gods both Greek and Norse. And what Kratos did in the first couple games was wrong and that he now feels bad about his mistreatment of both random mortals and the killing of most of the gods. (Spoiler alert) this is why he has problems connecting with his son who you find out is also a God (Loki) and the whole point of the last game was Kratos attempt at healing and bonding with his son which works but this is intertwined with The story of Ragnarok and how it starts. Kratos is forced to kill Balder at the end Fig/Fraya swears vengeance on him for killing her son and they go back home to wait the inevitable snow.

Dude, if you heard of some stories from greek poets there are a lot of times where the greek gods were petty as heck, I mean think of Hera punishing all the women Zeus cheated with, or medusa who got assaulted by Poseidon but got cursed by athena. I would argue that GOW was taking a pretty close interpretation of how the gods really are, they're petty and sometimes mean, they don't really care for the lives of mortals and punish people who don't submit to them. In someways those gods might be worse than the people they rule over.
