Good video. I've been here at old dominion since 2006. Started off working the dock, went to their driving school that year and worked p&d up to 2021 now I'm in line haul. You'll need your tanker endorsement as well with the hazmat due to the totes old dominion hauls. Vacations after 5 years I believe is 3 weeks, I think 10yrs you get a month. Start times for p&d vary from state to state, terminal to terminal. Here in the dfw area most guys starting out will come in later, 10am-2pm and work depending on the volume of work available, sometimes till 10pm-12am. I've never worked anywhere else but I get guys that have worked at other freight carriers and they say old dominion is alot better.

All terminals are kinda like like independent. What I mean is one OD terminal like yours may be great but another is crap. It’s how each terminal s management is. Same is true for other companies

Steve I currently Drive tanker. My biggest issue with the company is the benefits. The insurance barely pays for anything especially Dental wise. How well do they pay OTR drivers? And how good are the benefits?

I used to work at McLane Foodservice and then I was lucky to get hired by ODFL. Now I tell everyone that I hit the jackpot... Sometimes I hear drivers that started at the docks complaining and I just smile cause they have no idea how lucky they are.

Since you don’t work for Este anymore, I was hoping you can tell me how much they pay for starters with experience. if I apply for Estes, I will be out of the Dallas terminal. I believe that’s the one you were out of if I’m not mistaking.

Yeah, I was out of Fort Worth yeah , I believe it was 187. I started out at 27, but I was unexperienced so I believe you start out now about 29, I know they had a cost-of-living raise, in 2021 and probably another one last year. It’s not bad, but if you can, I would definitely work for Old Dominion.

On the high end, 52,000 a year. On the low in 40,000, it’s just a really sharp learning curve. Once you get through your first year you’re easily make 60 to 72,000 a year. You just can’t be scared of work. It’s a lifestyle.

You’ll make more in Texas, that’s the south east pay rate. I took a $.30 decrease, when I moved to Florida from Texas. Overtime after 50 hours. Depending on the terminal, will dictate if you get over 50.

@ haven’t utilized my CDL A in which I got about 9years. Looking for a career shift.Will OD hire me with no real time on the road experience? I don’t so you need one year of verifiable tractor-trailer experience with in the last five years I believe. Definitely apply and see what they say, I would just call your nearest Old Dominion terminal.

I worked for OD 9 years. 8 years LH and 1 year PD when I transferred. I quit to be a trash man. Now I make $4 an hour more. Every minute I work over 40 is OT. I get a fully funded pension. I pay zero dollars out of my check for full medical, dental and vision for my entire family. I don’t miss the trucking industry and I don’t miss OD. I start at 545 AM, work 4 on 3 off and still gross $100k plus.

Yes. I called the OM of a terminal and he said he CAN hire people with M Restriction and just train up with a driver at OD. This may not be the case everywhere, call and make yourself known.

P&D drivers are pick up and delivery. So yes there is touch. But line haul drivers are no touch.

What I mean by being a turn driver is to leave out of your home terminal and drive to a meet area whether it’s another terminal or truck stop to swap trailers….then return back to your home terminal. And the other line haul drivers use the team trucks and run coast to coast.

One time I had to drive from Miami to Reddick, north of Ocala and back but I had to drop one of the trailers in the Ocala terminal, get an empty there and take it to west palm beach, drop the empty and get a loaded trailer which was heavier than the lead trailer so I had to break the set and re do it to put the heavy one as lead and then go to Miami, it took like 13:30 to do all that

I think it varies with peoples experience, I had a great experience. It’s not the company, it’s their insurance, if have one major accident, ur done with top carriers. Guys go 40 years with zero accidents. It is what it is . If you love something, you got to protect it.
