Great video; love your enthusiasm for electric cars. It's encouraging. Another person commented that the headlights looked fine to them and I agree. Seemed to light up the road just fine. I hope to get a used 16/17 leaf as soon as the prices come down a bit; which I'm hoping will happen when the 2019 models come out. Keep up the good work!

Mark Levenson thanks, and yeah...I guess it was a bad example...at least for this video. What I need to do is a side by side comparison because it's definitely noticeable when you're behind the wheel vs how it shows up on camera... I came from a Kia Optima and the first time I drove my LEAF at night coming home from a friends house on a dark back road I had such a hard time seeing anything that I was driving 10 to 15 miles an hour below the speed limit. Same back road in my Wife's BOLT EV and I felt fine, same level of confidence I had back when I took my Optima on the same road... But like I said it's fine because I don't drive in the dark particularly on those unlit roads all too often. A simple fix would be to just replace the stock headlamps with something better, but I see no need to doing that until one burns out. (which may take a while because I hardly ever drive at night) The only time my lights are on is when it rains.

Bill, thanks for making these videos. I very much enjoy them. I am a long time watcher and first time commenter. I also have a Chevy Bolt EV LT and I absolutely love it. I test drove it on a whim one day because I heard about it and my local dealership had one. Riding in it one time convinced me that EVs are the future. I traded in one of my ICE cars and bought the Bolt. Today, I have the Bolt that I drive everyday and a Tesla Model 3 DM LR on order. Soon I will be a 2 EV household just like you! Also, I want to lower my costs even further so I'm currently getting bids on 7.4 kw solar system! Thanks again!

I remember the first time I drove the BOLT EV... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYmqZaWLZ8iojLM ...that was also the first time I drove an electric car and from that point forward I was convinced that this was the future! Shortly after that test drive I acquired my LEAF and it wouldn't be till almost a year later that we would land such a great deal on a BOLT for my Wife! Thanks for being a long time watcher and we look forward to uploading more videos of our experiences moving forward. 😀

Your probably the first EV owner who has touched on some of the points a non eco nut would like to hear about. I'm never going to give up my big tired 4x4 ever. However I normally have a simple relyable and cheep to operate car parked next to it in the drive way. Since my TDI Jetta got crashed I'm seriously considering a Bolt. All the eco speak with all other electric cars for me is just too much, it brings back memories of luke warm caned veggies when I was a kid. However if more people would talk about the solid relyable nature of a EV ( no waisted evenings fixing it that could be spent working on my truck or boat ) the quick and confident acceleration. ( unlike most easy on the gas ICE cars ) and low operating cost ( more fun money on weekends ) I honestly think there would be more people interested in EVs, quite possibly a lot more.

Concerning my pet peeve about charging without having to exit the turnpike, this was posted by the MTA just last week... "Installation of Tesla charging stations along the Maine Turnpike at the Kennebunk Service Plazas is complete and the units are now available for use. In total, there are sixteen Tesla charging units available - eight at the northbound plaza and eight at the southbound plaza. This project funded by Tesla, also provided room to accommodate future charging units for other systems and/or vendors when they are prepared to move forward. There is additional capacity for six units at southbound and eight spaces available at the northbound plaza. The MTA is coordinating with Efficiency Maine to find vendors that can put the other available spaces to use."

I was shocked to see that your battery is so super healthy! Have you taken your car in for the latest LEAF recall for the battery software update yet? I've had my 2017 LEAF SV since May 2017 and it has 10,970 miles on it. Before I took it to the dealer for the software update it had these numbers: AHr 67.741 SOH 85.28% Hx 79.84% QC 95 L1/L2 256 AFTER the software update the numbers improved to: AHr 74.107 SOH 93.24 Hx 79.89 What is your regular charging routine? I'd like to copy what you're doing so I can have a healthier battery like you do! I don't understand why there's such a huge difference in my battery compared to yours!!
@bmhsonic6 жыл бұрын
tanzanable Yeah, so my numbers have been exactly the same. (Before and after the update.) I think the biggest thing that helps is that I don't let my car live at 100% most of the time... On the CHAdeMO quick charges I can recall only a handful of times where it charged to 96~100% ...most of the times I'm either stopping the charge, or it's an EVgo unit and it's timed out and I'm at 80~90% when I take off and continue driving. At home I don't leave it plugged in unless I'm about to go up and visit my parents. (They're about 50 miles away.) Only then will I charge to 100% and I try to time it so that I'm ready to leave as it's finishing up, but there have been times where it's sat for an hour or two plugged in at 100%... I also have a JuiceBox Pro40 EVSE and that helps as I can set the "charge to" capacity to anything I want. I typically set it to 90% and when I get in the car the dash is showing anywhere between that and 92% and LEAFSPY is around 88% I don't plug in every day and I try to wait before I drop below 50% before it's time for another recharge... I live in a colder climate (Maine) so I think that's helping me too, but we get hot days up here as well just like everyone else. In fact we've just been through a HEAT WAVE with temps that were in the 90's for the past 4 days... I've been extra careful to NOT plug in as my last charge WAS to 100% on my Level 2 the morning before the heat wave and I stayed away from the CHAdeMO quick chargers until the heat broke... I don't have work place charging and I don't plug in all the time unless I really need it... I was a little disappointed this past winter when I would leave it plugged in overnight during some of the coldest nights (20F, 10F, -5F...) and I would have the climate control timer set so I could get into a warm vehicle...I didn't realize at the time (about 2 months of doing this) that when the climate control kicks in it counts as another time you've hooked up to a Level1/2. I really try to keep my charge cycles down to a minimum and this wasn't helping me any. (This was also before I realized I could limit my EVSE to only charge to 90%) Other than that that's pretty much it. Hopefully this helps. 😀

bmhsonic - Thanks so much for your great information! I was told not to worry about 100% charges but those may be hurting my battery health. I don't understand why my Hx is so low compared to yours. Do you know what Hx is and how to baby it? I have a HUGE spread between my Hx and SOH numbers!

So have a question. If you don't drive your ev car for a few days will your battery died? Example: snow storm comes through and stuck for a few days day before had half charge?
@bmhsonic6 жыл бұрын
Angelo Mastrando no, it will retain whatever charge you have in it when you last turned it off...however, during the winter months if you experience extreme cold (and we're talking like single digits here) the battery warmer may kick in which does draw about 300 watts or so just to keep the battery from freezing so in that case you may experience a percentage or two drop since the last time you turned it on. For the most part though in normal summer fall and spring months that is not an issue you can park the car and leave it for a few days and when you come back it will be at the same state of charge as it was where you left it.

We are thinking about buying a used Leaf but worried about getting hit with a $5500 bill when it needs a new battery. Thoughts ? Ideas ?
@bmhsonic3 жыл бұрын
I absolutely loved my LEAF and would get one again if the opportunity presented itself. I had bought new so I never worried about the battery, but I wouldn't let that hold you back if you have your heart set on one. Just make sure you get one with enough range to meet your daily needs and then some. Winter will cut your range in half so whether you get one that shows 75 miles, (the earlier models) 107 miles, (the model year I had bought) or one of the newer ones that can do either 150 miles or 200+ keep that in mind when you're shopping around. To worry about replacing the battery someday would be the same as to worry about replacing the engine on a gas vehicle. Unless you buy one that's already only getting 45 miles on a full charge with several of its battery capacity bars missing (much like buying a gas car that's already burning oil and showing other symptoms that the engine is on its way out) you probably will never go that route to have to deal with it.

What's funny is that LEAFSPY use to say that I was at 103% SOH, but it's since changed to 100% SOH...the AHr (the actual capacity reading of my pack) hasn't changed. It could just be that the developer of LEAFSPY needs to make an update to the app to more accurately display SOH readings on these newer packs. Since the face-lift and swaping the production from Japan to UK and US in fall 2013 the Leaf has heatpump heating. Also in those models the eco button is in the stearing wheel and the b mode can be activated by the "gear shift" knob

Would have been helpful to hear more about the range you generally get. How thing like aircon and heated seats affect it, summer and winter too. Also how long home charger takes etc.
@bmhsonic5 жыл бұрын
Range varies greatly depending on several different factors... Summer vs winter, one's driving habits, how often one uses the HVAC system, (if at all) etc... I can tell you that the heated seats (along with the lighting, the radio, pretty much anything that runs off of the 12v system) will not take anything noticeable from one's range. Home charging (if running 240v at 28amps) will only take between 3 to 6 hours, but again varies depending on how depleted the pack is when you go to plug in. I just picked up a used/CPO LEAF 2017, and drove about 8 miles on the freeway at about 60-65mph, and lost about 25 miles on the GOM (guess-o-meter)... is that normal??
@bmhsonic6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Le yes, that is completely normal... The reason why it's been dubbed the "guess-o-meter" is exactly that. It bases the estimated range off of your most recent driving. IF your previous driving was all stop and go traffic at lower speeds and you were scoring closer to a 5.0/per kWh average then the GOM will be predicting further ranges that you can go, however when you bring it on the interstate it's not only the higher speeds that will drop that average, but the fact that there's less opportunity for regenerative braking to occur and that consistent draw on the battery will lower your GOM readout too. If you watch my video where I took a trip to Rhode Island and back you'll see when I first left my garage with a 100% charge the GOM said I could go 121 miles, however after driving about 50 miles I was at a 50% charge and the GOM was stating that I could only drive another 50 miles or so...all of this I knew ahead of time of course as I explain in the video.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqjSipJpfrh2aaM

I drive very carefully, slow and easing on acceleration and coast on the freeway as much as I can... so dont know how people get 4.5mi/kwh or more... I'm by Seattle. Most are paid charging, a few free ones... and the paid ones can cost like $8 per charge.. or 50 cents per KW using Blink's Guest access, so a 30kwh battery , in theory, it could cost 30 kwh x 50 cents = $15 to fully charge up.. that's more than paying for gas!

Oh wow, and I thought 37 cents per kWh was expensive (average of what we pay when we DO have to pay to charge my Wife's BOLT EV) ...the only time we pay for charging is with my Wife's car and when we hook up to the #EVgo system... EVgo is kinda strange, I mean I have a love hate relationship with them. They charge you for the time that you're hooked up with them NOT for the energy delivered...so you gotta monitor it closely or you could end up overpaying in some instances. I love them because they seem to be all over the place in my area, and again with my LEAF for the next year it's FREE so I take advantage of that whenever I can...I would LOVE to see them expand into the FARMINGTON Maine area. THAT will be the determining factor on whether or not I continue to go with them moving forward... So another quick tip for you... You're 30kWh LEAF only takes advantage of about 95% of it's overall capacity. (All electric cars have a usable buffer built into them...to protect the battery) plus you would rarely (I would hope) not pull up to a charger at or near 0%... So on both ends of that you're really only paying to suck up like 20kWh ~ 25kWh at most... So $10 ~ $12.50 ...still expensive, but you're paying more for the convenience of a quick charge at this point... To answer your question about resetting the avg economy I found a quick video for you that explains it nicely. (It's not mine, but it tells you exactly what you need to know) so here it is --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZrTl3RnasensLM

Omid Indeed you're welcome! Yeah, I'm glad I took a chance on the LEAF as it's proved to be a decent car for me. 😀

In Costa Rica the Nissan leaf is the best electric car ..the country is pretty small so the mileage is good enough 😉👍 love that car ..here in California I own a Chevrolet volt 2014

Peter Fisher lol, my Wife had said the same thing when she reviewed the video with me, but it's a different story when you're behind the wheel and on some back road with no streetlights. (I also had my high beams on in that later shot.) Stay tuned for my comparison video between this car and my Wife's BOLT EV which I hope to have up towards the end of this month...

jim1hurley So I posted our Edaville Railroad trip on my other channel here --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3-Qq5mnbt6iaM0 as it really had nothing to do with electric cars. (I try to keep this channel for just technology reviews and electric car stuff.)

Idk if it’s just me but the 2017 and earlier versions looks kinda hideous. The headlights seem bug-eyed and the rear lights look way too thin. The updated one looks rather nice though

Did you know that just producing the battery pack equals the same amount of pollution as a semi truck that goes nonstop for a whole year! Did you know that using the power grid creates more pollution per mile then using gasoline or even diesel
