While I don’t own a TBT, I’ve been interested in this knife for a couple of years. From my research I’ve also heard that the gut hook draw was the way to go to make fine feathers. Eventually I will get over the price tag and buy one.

I have the Tops Tom Brown Tracker #1 it’s my favorite knife. I have an Esse 5 Both I take the paint off the blade with paint remover and steel wool. Then I blue the blades with oak sawdust. I use the Work Sharp Precission Adjust set at 25. It’s super sharp. One thing I learned to do is lay a bottle of water under the knife to help support its weight. The Tracker weighs more than the sharpener. I can shave with my Tracker and my Esse 5. In my opinion, you will never know how good of a knife this is until you get the paint off the blade then what I do is get some oak and cut it up with a skill saw to make a pile of sawdust and burry the blade in the sawdust or rub it in. The next day you will see the natural blueing.

History Using the Tracker Knife • The Chopping Blade • Chopping • Hand Positions • Scraping The Carving Blade • Carving • Splitting • Draw Knife • Fast Stock Removal The Saw Blade • Sawing • Notching • Scoring • Wire Breaker The Quarter Rounder • Use of the Quarter Rounder • Use of the Gut Hook The Point • Penetration/Spear Point • Drilling • Scrimshaw The Tracker Sheath The Scout Companion Knife Caring for the Tracker Knife Warranty and Return Information The Quarter Rounder There are many situations where being able to cut a notch quickly is a plus. One of the better uses of the saw blade is for creating notches. For example, one can cut the notches on a figure four trap rapidly and at the proper angle using the saw. The quarter rounder portion of the blade serves several functions. It can be used to round the edge of a bow, to carve out a bow drill spindle, or to open the body cavity of large game. Scoring When working bone, it is very helpful to score the bone before breaking it so that it breaks along the score line. Angling the saw at a 45° angle allows one to cut a score along or around a piece of bone, and thus make a clean break. Wire Breaker The first notch of the saw blade is deeper than the rest. This is the fence breaker. If you place a piece of fence wire under tension into this notch and give it a jerk to one side, that fence wire will break. The wire must be under tension for this to work. It may be necessary to jerk the knife back and forth several times if there is insufficient tension. The quarter rounder can be drawn towards the body in draw knife fashion (beware of the fingers, hold stock behind blade), or it can be used as a regular carving knife as shown above. In this photo, the edges of a bow stave are being rounded.

Interesting to see this pop after this knife has been out for so long. I am glad you posted this video. I have been going back and forth for years on gettng one and I just went ahead and ordered one. I went with the black and chose the normal handles over the RMT. I like the look of the RMT but not so much the feel. I like TOPS's kydex and leather too (hate the nylon). So I am hoping the kydex on this is good to go for a while. Eventually I might get a leather scout sheath. Great vid and great points! I am paring my Mora Garberg with it.

I love this review because you showed that the tom brown can do all the things that all of those other knives could do but each of those are only good for that one task when the tom brown has all of that in one. Jack of all trades master of none. But mastery is all about skill of use and how you use it so this can be perfected and still an all in one. I love mine and like the knife says if you could inly have ONE knife would you want a knives that only does chopping well and nothing else of toms since it can do multiple tasks in one knife

The thing I like most about the knife is that it does lots of other knifes jobs, maybe not as well as specialty knifes but it will do the job. Its made to be a many job one tool design and it does that very well. Instead of carrying 4-5 knives and a hatchet you can use this and carry less weight and be just fine.

Love the tracker. Won't change the handle and I dont have large hands, once you get use to it you find why it's made that way. Really this is a tool and you have to use it you and not just here and there use. Honestly I wound change only one thing and that's on mine after I stripped the coating on the primary grind the straight portion I found that right behind the secondary grind it was thicker. I took a file and ran it along the primary grind and found a valley so I filed that out and now cuts like dream. Really fine feathers now with the straight portion of the blade. That being said it ended up making the hooked portion more of a scandi grind.

Only thing I’d change is the cutting geometry on the draw. Been using one for years, have the whole TOPS collection, as well as some customs. I started with the mini TOPS though, just got more expensive from there. I pair it with a Swiss Army knife and I’m set. I describe it as a crafting axe with added features

I've been using my Tracker for over 10 years now and, for me, nothing compares to it. There are many great knives (steel eagle 107C-DC, Esee 6 & 6hm, Becker BK 7 & 9, Ontario rtak-II, Esee Jungles, LT Wright SOSPES, Bark River PSK & Squad Leader, etc) and I love using them all, but if I had to choose just one it would absolutely be my Tom Brown Tracker. Another great version of the Tracker is the Bark River version(s)...however, for me, the TOPS version out performs it.

Excellent, excellent review! I appreciate the time you took to compare and explain functionality of the tracker with other styles of cutting tools, ! That was a lot of work on your part,,,,,,,the bottom line is I’ve learned a lot about different knives in your video! I personally have the same tracker T-1, and it’s awesome; mainly for those that are the haters or have not used one, bottom line is that this is a tool that you need to learn how to use, for it’s designed for its multifunctional applications. .....Your tracker hasn’t been through the paces because it’s all pretty looking, my friend, lol....put on your Man Pants and...use it , and abuse it like your life depends on it, you’re not breaking the tracker, I promise!
@navigator1372

I agree with you the notcher is useful and convenient. Better than even using a bk 2 or 16 to notch. Tracker chops well. For most camp chopping it does kinda replace a small hatchet if you're only cutting wrist size stuff. The notches it makes are nice. The knife looks great too. Gotta be one of the most durable knives ever made. Its not the best at feather sticking but i never had trouble getting thin enough sticks for tinder. My drawbacks are that even though scout style carry makes it feel lighter it messes with the sheath when your backpack rubs on it. Screws fall out. So those metal clips suck ass. Could use a notch to strike ferro rods. The weight is heavy but the durability you get offsets that.

Great video and review. Thanks for sharing. As for my opinion, I do not like the Tracker at all! I had one years back, used it on numerous field excursions, really tried to love it, and then sold it. I guess it would be better than no tool at all, but for a one-tool option designed to handle knife and chopping tasks, I found it awkward, funky grind angles, too heavy, and too thick compared to so many better knife options out there--including larger knife options weighing equal to, or less than the Tracker! Yes, the Tracker offers the saw-back for notching (and I agree it's useful in its design), but you don't need a saw-back to notch. Pretty much anyone with sufficient knife time under their belt can whip out notches with ease with something as simple as a Mora Companion. I am also not a fan of scout style carry in the small of the back with a knife, or even carrying a firearm at the 6. I get that they did this with the Tracker for weight distribution, but having to reach behind me to draw a knife/firearm, or to have any knife/weapon visibly exposed to anyone behind me is a no go! I ended up getting an after market sheath when I owned the Tracker and carried it in a chest rig setup. To each their own and I am not critical of anyone who owns, uses, or loves the Tracker. There are plenty of folks that absolutely love the Tracker and swear by it. If it works for them, great! Based on my go-to setup preferences, it's not for me. I guess that's what's so cool about having so many options: we're all different, have different preferences, etc., and what is a no-go for some may be just the tool for the job for others.

It feels like every use he brought up, there was a better option. My take is sure, it's an all-purpose kind of tool that does a bunch of things sort of ok, but you'd be better off with two knives--a short one for detailed work, one larger for chopping and hard use. For how the price and weight of this thing, you could get two very nice knives that would serve you far better and probably weigh about the same.

Yeah tops are great knives, not sure which is going to be my next, either the sxb or the Tom brown tracker , I want a matched set of both in the long run one large one small.

To me a conventional knife will accomplish everything this one will and more. The edge transition just gets in the way for me. Not a bad knife and I judge not but too gimmicky for me. Nice job Tim.

Prefer the Beck over the Tom Brown jr. Edge geometry is better on the Beck. Can regrind the Tom brown but you always run the risk of ruining the heat treat.

Whjen I first got into knives ,one of my first knives was a Tops, forget the model but it was 154cm, 5" ,.25" thick blade with a saber grind. Did not like it but it did teach me a lot about knife blade geometry. Its the geometry that turns me off the Tracker. that shallow saber grind with such thick stock makes for a horrible cutting blade. They are simply way too thick behind the edge and only get immediately thicker due to that grind. Blade geometry is arguably the most important variable on any knife when it comes to how effective it will be at cutting. Todau Tops make far better designed knives then back then thankfully, those old knives were just ridiculous.

The only thing I don't like about the knife is the price. I personally love the design. It does many things. Maybe it doesn't do them great but it does them an its one of the few that can do many things.

You may need a more portable sharpening rod. Overall that's a lot of steel to carry around. Not ideal if you are a long distance hunter/hiker.

Good review. I have tried for 20 years to like this knife. I’ve had 3 from TOPS 2 with re-profiled blades to make cutting edges more efficient. I would classify them as junk (as shipped to me by TOPS), better junk, and best junk. But, junk is junk. I had one made by a quality custom Knifemaker and another from Bark River. These last 2 were quality products and helped proved to me the design is faulty. The Tracker style knife is an excellent example of a jack-of-all-trades, master of known. Give me a Victorinox Camper SAK, a Mora Classic 2, and a Baccho saw or small hatchet every time. Basically same weight and much more efficient. Just my two cents. If you love the Tracker, happy trails to you; go forth and enjoy!

They don't need to move the sweep to make it a better chopper. The knife operator needs to learn how to grip the knife better toward the rear to get the proper angle to simulate a hatchet.

I've only just discovered the video explaining how Rob Russon is the original designer of the tracker knife, and that he presented it to Tom Brown. Tom Brown told him it was one of the best knives he'd ever used and that his students would want to buy it. Story goes on from there. Here's a link to the video kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqLPnHmmr8aEmrs Don't know if you've heard about this before, just wondering if you might add new information to your video here or some sort of update for the audience. Tom Brown has his name on the knife but I feel it's only fair that KZbinrs reviewing it should give credit to the man who came up with the idea and original design. I was glad to learn the real story since it's such an iconic knife, I'm sure others would like to know as well.

And you missed the easiest way to make Feather sticks...its all over KZbin...because it makes one of the best Feather sticks for beginners....and they will look like pros....and sure it's not going to as good as Smaller Knife in some Areas..but that Smaller knife can't do some of the things this Bigger knife ..dose so Easily....I like bigger knives I always have...I am thinking about getting this Knife...I guess people with Bigger knives will have to work a little harder to do finer tasks...but the guy with the Mora will have a big problem chopping a big Piece of wood..To Each your own

Tom brown did NOT design this knife. Rob Russon designed it and sent a prototype to Tom Brown who stole the design and went to tops to build it. In fairness to Tops they did not know of the controversy or its original designer. Sad story for Mr Russon.
