Hey guys! I hope you enjoyed this in depth tutorial. I am starting to put a course together and you can be apart of it. To make the best course possible for you guys I need to know what knife makers struggle with the most, I will be making the course around the most common struggles. Thanks for helping out! :)

First thanks Kyle for the awesome content. I struggle mostly with hammering the tip and grinding the bevels.

Hey Kyle I earn loving your videos But could you go more in detail with your mosaic Damascus patterns. Like the sword video. I rewatch it multiple times but it was a bit hard to follow I understand how basic patterns are made but I. Ant seam to find anything online to on the "science" behind it aka understand it at ur lvl where u can make up patterns. Any books or references would be appreciated. I know others would enjoy videos like that to!!

This my brother is what I'm talking about! For sure!!! It was almost a personalized 2 on 1 private lesson from the Master. With that said, I'm afraid you are going to charge me. I cant afford ya! Not yet fer shur! Seriously Kyle, how you explained that whole process was fantastic, as far as the technical aspect. It would be up to us the students to pull it off with the tools that we have. Remember we all dont have the same array of tools. Oh man, if I could be taught like that by someone of your caliber just for a few years on several aspects of my craft i would be blessed beyond words. I dont even want to sell my blades really, just give as gifts to friends and loved ones.

About the shearing . If you would forge the billet into an octagonal instead of a square billet before twisting would that not minimize the edges from shearing?? The core steel would remain equally thick while the twisting would also be a bit easier since the corners are gone.
@rossmoffett1342
@rossmoffett1342 5 жыл бұрын
You could do that but then the pattern would turn out differently. As far as I know.

You are correct , Maybe not 100% the same pattern at the edge/sides. But It would still be torsion/twist damast....even when you completely round the piece before twisting it. But without much shearing . In the video he is cleaning the sheared sides by grinding them a bit. If you do not need to grind , you keep more damascus at the finish :) Just my 50 cents.

HoutmeyersP I’ve made it that way and it’s better in my opinion. Not much of a difference in pattern but way easier

How fun! Thanks for sharing this, I'd love to be able to visit a MS someday, you can usually really tell a difference in the knives of bladesmith after he goes and gets in person instruction and lessons. Bob's knives look great too, just checked out his Instagram and saw his JS set, very nice! Hey Kyle, I was wondering if you could clarify a bit on what Bob was referring to at the end when he mentioned folding the billet to mirror instead of folding it to oppose? Does that mean you cut the billet in half and then, rather than restacking it as if you were simply folding it over onto itself, you stacked it so that both of the ends of the billet were still on separate ends of the billet instead of both being on the same side, which would happen after a normal hot cut and folding? Also, what was the purpose for this again? I hope that makes sense lol. Great content as always!

Check out 7:51 in the video, it explains it a little bit on the mirroring. Unfortunately I can't get Kyle, he is extremely busy trying to get the sword done. We are thinking maybe this week it will be done! ~ Josh

KyleRoyerKnives - Ohh ok, now I get it, lol. The first time I watched and heard him mention that at 7:51 I couldn't quite tell how he was motioning with the fold direction. When Kyle said it helps keep the handle in the center, I now see that he was referring to the center of the *thickness* of the billet, for some reason I first thought he somehow meant the width, which threw me off a bit in how exactly he was folding it. Thanks for the reply, Josh, as well as for playing such a big part in sharing this great and education content with us. I'm certainly looking forward to the big reveal! Take care and God bless, brother :)

Hey Kyle. I see that you flatten your bar without grinding down the high spots after twisting. Isn't there a risk of creating cold shuts doing that? If not then I'll stop grinding my bars all the way down because that will save me a TON of time. Thanks!
@KyleRoyerKnives
@KyleRoyerKnives 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Nate not worried about cold shuts. If I get one it’s very manageable. Good question my friend. Like and share Dad

*manganese. The boiling point of magnesium is only a couple of hundred degrees above forgewelding temperature, so even if there was some in the plate, it would have all diffused out and scaled up during forgewelding. There's also appreciable manganese in both steels, not just the 10xx

Best video ever,getting to hear your thought process as you are building the steel is a great help. The little things like turning heat down at beginning and allowing the steel to heat with the forge. 🤌. Magnificent
