I just bought my galaxy 4 watch last Oct.. went to the swimming pool(surface) and guess what? Yup! my watch died... i bring it to the service center.. guess what? the waranty didn't cover for water damage... the cost of repair is more pricey than the watch itself.. hope my testimony helps any of you who thinking to buy one.

I really want to see someone put this watch through a really brutal water test. You read soooo many differing reviews about its ok to swim with it, don't swim with it, don't shower with it, shower with it, don't go so many feet underwater with it. I want to know it's real limits. I would try things out myself. But I'm just a paycheck to paycheck living guy and can't afford to buy another watch if I ruin it.

Do not shower with any touchscreen device when using any kind of cleaning agent. From my experience soap cleanses the anti-fat-coating (i don't know the real name, so ill just call it that) off touchscreens. The coating makes your screen easier to clean, without those "streaks" of fat and grease. Drop a single drop of water onto a new phone, and one that has been in use for a couple years (the coating gets slowly fades from normal usage as well) You'll see a kind of lotus-effect on the new one, where the old one the drop just acts like on any other glass. If you use soap, you remove it in an instant - i did that once, i don't recommend it. That being said I have no clue how much "just water" in the pool would destroy such coatings, though I am fairly sure it will be much less destructive than soap-water. That's why: Don't shower with it. Because soap will damage the coating. Do swim with it. Because it's water resistant. Hope that helps ? :)

@@Murv it's called an oleophobic coating and no soap won't damage it more than normal wear or tear in fact soap works by breaking down fats, so it'll clean any oil off the screen and prevent build-up... But it won't affect it any more than the chlorine in the pool, in fact it'll probably be better to make sure the chlorine and salts are properly cleaned off but still the only damage soap will do it make your screen get fingerprints but that will happen eventually anyway

I dont know if you still need input on your question but here is my experience. I had this watch from the release day and I swim with it shower with it 5 no problems so far. The reason why I wanted to watch this video is because I never bothered switching to actually swim workout I waited until auto detection will trigger this workout for me but unfortunately I don't see any laps registered so only thing which I will start doing differently is I will properly start swimming workout before swimming. @@MikeLisii Thanks, yeah I do shower with mine in because I work construction. It gets sheetrock dust, saw dust, fiberglass dust, dirt, mud... so I shower with it to clean it as well. But sooooo many people say, don't swim, shower, or wash your hands with it or you'll ruin it. But yet the watch has swimming exercise workouts built in and all. So I was just curious what the watch can really really handle. What kind of real water abuse it can take.

I use swim coach pro. You tell it what gear you have, pool length, starting distance, goal distance, time (weeks) until goal, how many times a week you want to swim, what you want to work on (breathnig, endurance, technique etc). and then it builds workouts for you. just got the galaxy watch 4. unfortunately it only syncs with garmon watches

I've done quite a bit of swimming with the galaxy watch 4. Its a great app, but I've noticed it loses yardage if you do 100 IMs. When you're switching strokes it get's confused. It may have to do with flip turns and how much under water time you have on the lap. Just a note to any high end swimmers out there considering this. It also doesn't work well with kick boards or some 1 armed stroking sets you may do. It seemed to be happier if when you do IMs you do 200s verses 100s. 2 laps of a stroke works better than single laps.

Great video! I'm primarily interested in this watch for swimming.. I really needed to know whether the watch can count distance and laps.. I always loose counting when I swim 60laps of 25m, which equals 1.5km. Gotta loose the extra pounds. And I love the fact that the watch also measures bodyfat %.

I use this all the time to swim and never have had a problem. Of course, I always have it in Swim Mode, so it has the Water Lock mode. I swim in bright sunlight, so I usually find it impossible to see the screen while I am swimming. This video is helpful because I will set up less data on the screen, so that the type is larger and I can actually see it. While I am swimming, all I want to know is how many laps I have done so far, and how much time I have been swimming.

- When swimming we often do drills (only legs, only one arm, ...) and of course the watch won't be able to know since it can only pick the arm movement. What most swim watches do (like Garmin Swim 2) is they allow the user to manually enter the drill log by marking the start time and end time and then entering the distance covered. A great video. But I am concerned whether the detailed swimming data split by laps is accurate. From your screen, your freestyle duration in the 25-meter pool fluctuates from 26 to 52 seconds per lap, that doesn't look like your real speed and strengthens my concern.

I find that when I do the breast stroke it records backstroke. Since I use a snorkel I can understand this., and I am good with it. There is a learning curve and I am getting better with the watch all the time. With wet fingers it can be hard to change the face, but sooner or later I get it. I like the fact that when I complete a lap info will pop up and update the work out. No reply is needed. Getting better with it every session.

I've had a number of Samsung watches primarily because I use the Samsung phone. Unfortunately all of them have been disaapointing when it comes to measuring workouts. The swimming app is really unreliable.. It doesn't accurately track laps, and it frequently just stops for no apparent reason. The heart rate monitoris also very inaccurate. At at lower or moderate heart rates it works pretty well but at higher heart rates, it reads much higher than it actually is.

My Active2 got water damage on my 3rd training session of 1+ hour. It got stuck in bootloop than won't even turn on. While it was working I absolutely loved the way it tracked my results, distance, laps, flaps, bpm, etc. It is a shame it is NOT warer resistant.

My active watch 4 died the same way. It wasn't the first time I swam with it, but it was indeed the first time I swam with it for 1 hour non stop. I just bought a galaxy watch 5 and I'm not afraid to take it to a pool with friends or the beach but I do am worried about taking it to a swimming class. The specs are not super straightforward, you are not supposed to swim with IP68 / ATM5 apparently

I swim in a 25 meters pool. I have a 150m program that I do 10 times and it should show 1500m, but it is always a couple of 100 meters short. I seem to lose 25m here and there... is there any way to correct this. I love my watch, but found out I also seem to be allergic to something it is made of... probably crome ... so I can not wear it all the time. I hope it counts my steps in my pocket... I can't really walk as my ankle and leg got destroyed a long time ago... so I swim and love it. 1500 in around 50 min for my age is not bad... 71

Awesome to hear swimming is how you keep active despite an ankle injury. I think the watch can miss some laps, especially if your turn arounds arent super obvious to recognize on each lap. Just make sure your lap pool is set to 25 meters and keep it tight on your wrist. If your swim is a leg only swim, expect it to not track it well, since the watch is not moving like a freestyle stroke for example.

Hi I actually decided to buy a Galaxy 4 after your review, but to my surprise it doesn't record intervals as i.e. Apple watch does. I checked into json files and rest time is always set to zero. Laps count is quite accurate but interval training is not recorded as it should. If this field is available in json files and not presented in Samsung health I suspect it was left behind on purpose and the algorithm seems to export only zero value. I hope it's just a temporary oversight or future fix, because rest time info is needed as well as interval grouping regardless how the sets are conceived (10X75, 10x125, 25+175 at different speeds etc..)

Great question. Waterlock doesnt change anything other than the facy that it turns on a speaker noise that pushes out water. So you can swim all you want without water lock on, and then after you get out, turn on and off water lock to spray the water out of the speaker grills.

Correct. If you are using the default swim workout, dont worry about pausing, then watch will auto pause for you when you stop swimming. Technically you do not need the waterlock on while you are swimming. You can get away with using the Swim.com app and track your swims with that app. then you will be able to wipe off the screen and pause when you need.

You can swim just fine in chlorine water. The watch 4 and 4 classic are the exact same watch internally, just different frame. They will both work great in pools

Its a big no to swim with it. I screwed my watch by swimming in the pool just once. Its dead. I checked later and found that samsung says in their website that it is not recommended to use in sea or pool. Then why do they have a swim feature in the watch?

I find that when I'm in the water I cannot use sliding the finger to activate functions. After flailing back and forth on the watch face I find myself in a place other than where I want to be. Then the whole workout is cancelled. Also is there a way to erase the failed attempts to record a workout?

Ive used my galaxy watch 4 at least 10 times for 30 minute swim workouts and i havent had any issues yet! Just make sure to use the water lock after to shoot the water out of the side.

hi guys , I used this watch for a couple of months to swim in the pool but I noticed that in swimming the calorie count was really too high .. it was not realistic .. have they solved the problem with software updates?

No. I just got one and I've been swimming for about a month. I was so happy to see 300+ calories burned in 40min of swimming. Then I had to think about it and realized thats impossible. LOL

Interisting that you can go swimming with this having only 5 ATM water resistance, usually for normal watches you would take a diver at 20 ATM

nah man, i got couple of different watches, some graded for 5 atm and some for 30 atm. i swim quite often in the pool with my watch on, they are all fine. as long as you arent doing any kind of diving activities, most watches should be fine

I know the manual says up to 30 minutes and i saw your workout also was just about 30 minutes but would say its safe to swim constantly for 1 hour without having to worried about the watch getting water damage ? (indoor pool 25m length)

@@rodrigoconde5044 so since my comment i been using the watch for 3 weeks swimming up to 1,5 hours every day. No problem! Sometimes i even forget to start the waterproof mode after i already jumped in th water and no issues at all

Problem: With my old Galaxy Fit 2 Pro I was able to activate my swim workout screen, then put it on pause while I entered the shower, and then start the swim workout when I got into the pool. I can't do this without turning off the water lock, and then on again during my workout. Unless you have a solution Samsung has to do a software update to Pause my workout, for my shower, or they will have warranty claims

water lock does not 'lock' water out.. you can swim with water lock off.. the only thing water lock does is activate speakers in the watch which blow water out for a few seconds.. go swim, then when you are done, turn water lock on and back off to activate the water eject speakers.

@@Develoquent I am then touching my screen, which should be locked out also. The point is that I should be able to push One of the buttons on the side of the watch to pause my workout, temporarily if I like. Hold the same button longer and it finishes my workout. I just want to shower before and afterwards with a water lock on.

My Galaxy Watch4 always records extra lengths (laps) once it detected double the amount of what I did, does anyone else have experience this? do you have any advice for avoiding this to happen?

Thanks for such a detail review! Is your watch still working? I swim 5 days a week for at least an hour in chlorine & salted outdoor pool. I had a OnePlus watch and it just died on my after exactly 1 year and 1 month, and of course, the warranty has expired! Yet my FitBit Inspire HR is still running beautifully!

I've got the galaxy 5 watch and all of a sudden it's stopped counting my laps and calories. I'll swim for 1 hour straight and it will say 0 laps and 62ckal. Samsung can't explain why their tech people you have to deL with on their website are useless and just past generic responses
