Audio Fusion is a complete in-ear monitoring system that uses your phone or iOS mobile device as the receiver. It integrates with your existing live audio hardware and offers an extremely high quality (and stereo!) in ear monitoring solution for around 1/10th the cost of traditional wireless in-ear systems.
In this video, Brian talks with Brandon Leafblad, co-founder of Audio Fusion. Brandon walks through how the system works and exactly what you need to get started.

I use an Android phone like many of the other commentators and look forward to that support. With that said, I've done enough reading on APP development to understand why companies only support IOS in the beginning stages. I appreciate that you guys are working so we can have affordable, wireless in ear monitoring. I do have an IPad that will work now. I will be sharing this video with our Worship Pastor, Media, and Sound Techs.

Christian Guerrero it’s really important that you use a Router that is NOT connected to the internet. so yes you should use a router with at least one 5G band. It should be a strong router so expect to spend around 2 to $300 on one unless you can find a used one.
@ChristianGC7
@ChristianGC7 4 жыл бұрын
Jon Burton ohh wow, umm why can’t it be connected to the internet?
@jonburton3517
@jonburton3517 4 жыл бұрын
Christian Guerrero because when you connect the router to the internet, you end up getting to much interference and your router ends up working to hard to keep up with all the signals. You will end up getting Latency and Drop outs regularly. You want your router to basically be a wireless conduit between your soundboard, MacBook, and SoundCaster applications on stage. Of course you will want to plug your soundboard and Mac straight into your router. Also you need to be sure to turn off WiFi on your MacBook so that it is only getting and sending signal directly from and to the router with an Ethernet cable. I’m sorry if it sounds complicated :/ it really is simpler than it sounds.

Is there any documentation regarding the protocols / osi-layer architecture used? Cause otherwise i have to compare it to my 200€ LD MEI 1000 system that also works fine on small stages.

I love the idea but there will always be latency. Try this: plug earplugs into your phone, open the voice memo app and snap your fingers. Latency. There’s no way you’re getting faster than that over WiFi. All reviews I’ve seen and heard concur. BUT some people don’t mind latency. They offer a test app that lets you try it out before buying which I think is very commendable.

I think most of it is because Apple is so closed off when it comes to hardware/software integration. Only Apple makes the both the hardware/devices and the software, so they can completely standardize everything. It's a double-edged sword. On one hand, you really limit flexibility of the end user (including the options for hardware like computers and mobile devices), but on the other hand, developing for it is much, much easier and typically more successful.

@finlayapps7479

Some mixers have USB that will plug right into the laptop. If that's the case for you, just use the same method as you already did but choose the USB source instead on the built in mic. Otherwise use line in instead of mic. Failing that try turning the aux output on the mixer right down. Aux will likely be outputting at line level which is much louder than mic level. If it still doesn't work buy a cheap USB audio interface that has line inputs and record that.

@AudioFusionSystems
@AudioFusionSystems 5 жыл бұрын
You could use the ione by itself. SoundCaster would recognize the one channel when you connect it by USB. If you want all the channels from your analog mixer you would have to run a split of the analog signals into an audio interface or small digital mixer with enough analog inputs to handle the number of channels you need to convert to digital. The Presonus 1824 ($450), for example, would convert 10 channels of analog to digital.

Any DAW, including Garage Band and Logic can send tracks to a mixer where they mix with the live instruments and all come back together over the same USB for Audio Fusion. But, if you want to broadcast the output from Garage Band or Logic directly you would need to use a third party software to go directly from a DAW to SoundCaster without leaving the Mac. Dante Via is one of the best ($59 from Audinate)

Unfortunately the analog mixers will USB out are, usually, just a L/R stereo mix for recording. That USB connection would not give you the each channel that you can control separately. @AudioFusionSystems
@AudioFusionSystems 5 жыл бұрын
SoundCaster will broadcast the audio, channel by channel, from any digital audio source you can connect to a Mac. With most digital mixers these days, SoundCaster is broadcasting the USB outs. that means it can broadcast the raw (pre fade, pre EQ, pre FX) audio. But, many mixers give you a lot of flexibility in what you route to the USB out so you can send sub-mixes with EQ/FX or warm up a single channel with EQ/FX by choosing a post pick off point.

Sounds great! But what about the delay / latency in a non-lab environment (depending on the distance from the router). It's gonna be fine to make some real testing from the audio fusion team with measures from the wifi quality of signal and time responses.
@AudioFusionSystems
@AudioFusionSystems 5 жыл бұрын
Today the latency is fixed in our algorithm so the variation in distance from the router would only cause more jitter in the Wi-Fi signal. That would not add more latency but could present in some small sound quality issues. Thats the trade off. Latency vs Sound Quality. We are coming out with a new version of SoundCaster later this year that will give the user a little control over the latency settings so that you can take advantage of low jitter set ups like using Power-Over Ethernet to your backline.

I‘d love to hear about your experience with audio fusion in like 3-6 month, because I think, like with any other technology ever, you’ll experience some smaller or bigger caveats once you really start using it. Some questions I’d have: A. How much latency does it produce? Can you really use it parallel to an existing wireless in-ear solution? B. How reliable is it? Do you experience signal loss, app freeze, whatever? C. How good is the audio quality? If you send uncompressed audio files...that’s a loot of data, I wonder if this actually works so you really hear no difference to „traditional“ in-ears I’d love to hear from you in a couple month, cheers!

What’s the full system latency? There’s a lot of “parts” to this system. I’d be interested in seeing what latency is with the X32 using different connection methods like Dante or the USB. Also, does latency increase with each device connected?
@worshiptutorials
@worshiptutorials 5 жыл бұрын
I asked Brandon about this, and he said the inherent latency in their system is almost 0 - it's so low that you'd never detect it. But in real world usage the actual latency will depend on a lot of factors outside of their system like the board itself, the router, etc. He did say if you're using a recommended router and a modern digital console, latency is not an issue - it's so low you can't detect it.

Great idea, but if SoundCaster was available for Windows and Performer would work with Android as well as the existing Apple products it would be genius. I hope other options are in the works. The video did mention Android may be in the works, but quickly switched to, "If your band has iPads on stage already for charts or whatever, you can actually run AudioFusion behind your charts" while it may be true that the iPad is wireless, you can't really put an iPad in your pocket. So if the iPad is mounted to a mic stand or sitting on a music stand, then personally you are not really wireless anymore.

I said it on the churchfront video- if you’re going to go wireless- do it right or don’t do it at all. Jake had a drop out and that’s enough for me to run as far away as possible. You’re asking for a train wreck! Also consider the fact that you can’t rely on your musicians to always bring their IPHONE’s charged (I’m guilty of that) yet alone even have iPhones, so you gotta consider the cost of buying the newest iPod touch or unlocked iPhone’s ($749 minimum) for everyone which, keep in mind, have a shelf life of operating at 100% for only a few years and could have software issues over time. Which that alone tells me as a manager of God’s money it’s probably not a wise investment. Then you gotta consider the cost of a dedicated router. Great idea, i really legitimately like it, but the traditional route is the way to go. But I do appreciate options like this out there. I can see this being a cool option for a youth group band and getting them used to IEM’s and monitoring their own mixes.

Compared to buying wireless in ear units for every musician, it's a fraction of the price. With a traditional system you're looking at $1000 per musician, plus the cost of a monitoring system like Aviom, which itself is thousands (unless you use a board that has that kind of thing built in). Even if you don't have any of the hardware for Audio Fusion, you can buy what you need for about $1000-1200 (the computer and the router), and then the cost per musician for wireless in ears is about $300 ($200 for the iOS device and $100 per musician for Audio Fusion). It's still way, way cheaper.

@@worshiptutorials You mentioned the Behringer X32, has everything you need. No need for the Aviom. And an iphone for $200? Can't find these here, they start at ~$700. Plus the new iphones don't even have a headphone jack, so for serious in-ear monitoring, it is totally useless.. $300 is the price for a decent, no-brand-bunny, wireless in-ear system. Even a Sure start at $450, which I would always prefer before the iphone solution. And then, no need for the Mac and the additional router.
