★ 12 Phrase of (IN) in spoken English
1. IN TWO / HALVES / PIECES etc
(Used to say how many parts something is divided into)
• I tore the letter in two and threw the pieces in the fire.
• She cut the meat in pieces.
2. IN (DOING) SOMETHING
(While doing something or while something is happening, and as a result of this)
• In all the confusion, it is quite possible that some people got tickets without paying.
• In my excitement, I forgot all about the message.
• In trying to protect the queen, Howard had put his own life in danger.
3. IN ALL
(Including every thing or person)
• There were 25 of us in all.
• In all, there were 215 candidates.
• We received $1,550 in cash and promises of another $650, making $2,200 in all.
4. IN THAT
(Used after a statement to begin to explain in what way it is true)
• I've been lucky in that I have never had to worry about money.
5. BE IN YOUR 20s /30s /40s etc
(To be between the ages of 20 and 29, 30 and 39 etc)
• Matthews was already in his mid-40s.
6. BE IN FOR SOMETHING
(If someone is in for a surprise or shock, it is going to happen to them)
• She's in for a shock if she thinks we're going to pay.
• I'm afraid he's in for a bit of a disappointment.
7. BE / GET IN ON SOMETHING
(To be involved in doing, talking about, or planning something)
• Were you in on my birthday surprise?
• I think you ought to be in on this discussion, Ted.
8. BE IN FOR IT
(INFORMAL If someone is in for it, they are going to be punished)
• If they find out what I've done, I'll be in for it, won't I?
9. BE IN WITH SOMEONE
(INFORMAL To have a friendly relationship with someone)
• She's in with the theatrical crowd.
• You have to be well in with the directors if you want to get promotion here.
(To be very friendly with them)
10. BE IN AT THE BEGINNING / START (OF SOMETHING)
(To be present or involved when something starts)
• She was in at the start.
11. HAVE (GOT) IT IN FOR SOMEONE
(INFORMAL If someone has got it in for you, they do not like you and try to cause problems for you)
• Dean thinks his teacher have it in for him.
12. THE INS AND OUTS OF SOMETHING
(All the facts and details of something)
• The book guides you through the ins and outs of choosing and growing garden flowers.
