When I was in the ninth grade, when my English teacher told me to read the paraphrase, and I mispronounced a word, and she correct in a very harsh way. She criticized me in front of my classmates and I was really embarrassed at that time. And I also remember that when she told us to make an essay, and I was typographically incorrect and used an incorrect grammar, and she starts to belittle me again in front of many students. That's why I searched an English Teaching channel here in KZbin and I saw this channel, and frankly speaking, I learned so much about English than my Teacher. Thank U Lucy! I really like your channel!

My mother tongue is Tamil but I had my education in the English medium. I am Indian but I had my primary and secondary education in Sri Lanka during the 1950s. My English teacher in the 4th and 5th standards and then in the 1st Form was an English lady, Miss Hutchins. I am 78 now. Listening to this video brought me nostalgic memories of my good old teacher. For me as a German it sometimes strikes me that the same sequence of letters can have so many different pronunciations in English. For example, many Germans get confused with the suffix "ate". They often pronounce "ultimate" like "ulti-mate" ("-ait") as in "late", "gate", "fate" and so on... Another example is the suffix "-ough", which can have so many different pronunciations that you have to memorise the pronunciation for every word that ends in it separately.

OMG YES I've started learning German and I was so admired by pronunciation in German (I'm not really sure this word is exactly correct but I hope you'll understand me (English is not my mother language tho)): it's really clear and, you know, non-varible as in English, and das ist fantastisch lol

That's the only real difficulty with English, its grammar is a piece of cake and so many words have Latin or Greek roots that it's easy to guess their meaning but its pronunciation 😱 ! Even a learned English speaker who comes across a new word in a book must check its pronuncation 🤔. As an English teacher used to tell us : an English word written "elastic" may well be pronounced "rubber"... or the other way round 😄 ...

Knowing a few words and expressions doesn’t mean one has full command of the language. My dear Lucy, I did like the 20th word pronunciation as it kind of sounds like gorgeous which in turn sounds very much like you, GORGEOUS!
@BUDbizWIZ5 жыл бұрын
If I can politely add my two cents here. As an American, native to The Washington D.C Metro Area, and an English teacher for over 20 years, I want to remind folks that the *sound* of pronunciation on a few of these words in this video are related to the BRITISH way of speaking *sounding* good in a BRITISH accent. For example, Americans do not pronounce "spherical" with an "ah" sound on the vowel as the British do. We pronounce, quite clearly, with an "eh" sound on the vowel (sfer-,ˈsfi(ə)rikəl). If you locate the word in the American English Dictionary online, and hit the "listen" button you will hear the word pronounced as Americans do. Although I LOVE a British accent, if you tried to pronounce it as the Brit's do in an American accent or while speaking as a native speaking American from New York or Washington, D.C, you will sound very odd to folks. All I'm saying is remember that language is complicated, especially English! Another thing to keep in mind is pronunciation EVOLVES over time. Never forget that. For example, before WWII, the word "ration" used to be pronunced rhyming with "nation". Now the word is pronounced rhyming with "fashion". Due to political impacts, demographical reasons and colloquial functions, there are hundreds upon thousands of words that *used to be* pronounced one way, but today, are pronounced in another. Anyway, as usual, Lucy fantastic content and videos! You looked fabulous in this video! Thank you.

Rita Robertshaw Ok that’s fine and all, Ms., yet... Standard American English is the #1 form of English taught and learned worldwide. I know because I work for a company of AMERICAN teachers (there are millions of us that teach online) and the last time I checked our student enrollment count was into the millions- confirmed and activity learning Standard American English. So as far as YOU considering that AMERICAN English is, as you say, an “adulterated” versión of “True English” (British English)-- Whelp! that’s not what MOST of the world thinks. Thank you.

Though I was born in Transylvania, my first language was German, I then learned the actual Transylvanian language. We moved around a lot, going to France, where I learned French, Italy (Italian) and several other places before we eventually landed in London. By this time, we'd started planning, so I knew English. I went to Boarding school, and by the time I returned, I also knew Latin. I found this surprisingly easy, but was teased for being posh at school. By the time I left school two summer holidays later, we were back in Transylvania, square one. The end!
